Rhythm challenge from 3 Creative Studios
Rhythm – pattern – music – beat – life – dance!
A visit to China and delayed flights prevented me from posting this earlier.

Rhythm from 3 Creative Studios
I started out with a different, but simliar iteration of this quilt when we first got the word “rhythm”. I knew I wanted to convey all the rhythms in the world – music and drums and dance and movement and the pull of gravity, tides in the sea… so I initially sketched out three panels encompassing these ideas and excitedly went about making them.
I started with the same woman I have depicted here, only in purples and golds on iridsescent blacks dotted with “stars”, and I was pleased; but then stumbled upon how to incoporate these three disparate panels together ...

RiverSong – October from 3 Creative Studios
This quilt is the second in a series celebrating my favorite places here in the mountains of NC. It’s a small stream that I visit often, and I never tire of the rhythm of it’s sparkling waters. I can spend a whole day doing nothing but sitting here and daydreaming and never think that I have wasted a moment!
Can’t believe I made the deadline on this one! Finished it late yesterday, photographed it in the bad light of an approaching thunderstorm and had to hurriedly post it to the forum before I had to unplug my ...

Rhythm from 3 Creative Studios
When I saw the theme “rhythm” for this challenge, I had to grin
) It was the theme for the Open European Quilt Championship – and I had a quilt in that show. So I decided to “cheat” in a way. Here’s a picture of my quilt “May the rhythm of your life be a happy one” – on my blog here you’ll find more information about the design and construction of it. -
Rhythm…it is all music to me:) from 3 Creative Studios
When I think of Rhythm, I think of music! From the very beginning of this challenge I wanted to do something to display music. I used my Silva paintsticks, fabric from my stash, and searched for the perfect embellishments to make a statement. “I have rhythm, I love the sound!” It was a fun journey.

Natural Rhythm from 3 Creative Studios
Here is my challenge piece on rhythm. I had no idea what I would do for this word until I picked up a piece a fabric on a trip and my son-in-law said it reminded him of dragon flies. Opportunity! The beat of their wings is impressive – - and definitely rhythmical. The quilt itself gave me the opportunity to explore working with transparency and a 3D aspect.

Rythm from 3 Creative Studios
Finished! After several sketches I chose one to create an appliqued quilt. I used a blanket stitch around all the pieces and then filled in all the orange and yellow with free motion quilting. It’s not visible in the photo but I did some free motion random circles along the long borders and vertical quilting on the ends. Measures about 24″ by 17″. Thanks for another fun challenge!

Rhythm from 3 Creative Studios
This is my quilt for the theme “Rhythm” . It is a whole cloth piece hand painted with Dyne a Flow, text written with permanent marker, machine quilted and a few hand stitches holding it together.
The names written around the heart are those of goddesses from different cultures who represent love, fidelity and marriage. I did throw in a ringer–the Chinese goddess of face cream, Hsi Shih. The image inside the heart is drawn from a photograph and is colored with Prismacolor pencils. The heart motif is a continuation from the first two quilts ...

Rhythm from 3 Creative Studios
Ok, truth time. My project for this challenge isn’t exactly a quilt, although it does contain layers and stitching.
When I started thinking about the theme for this challenge, what I saw in my mind were objects moving together in harmony. I played with this idea on paper and found myself tearing the paper and weaving it. I realized that the weave of fabric is rhythmic, in that one row of fibers (the warp) flows into other rows (the weft), and they are all bound together so that they can move freely. Reading that now, it probably doesn ...

Another late Passage from 3 Creative Studios
About 2 weeks before our reveal deadline, I decided to change the direction of my Passage piece. This meant completely starting over. Well it’s about a month late but here it is. I painted the fabric, then quilted it. Then quilted it some more to add details and finally painted it a second time to give more depth to the piece. It’s approximately 19×24. On vacation in Savannah , GA a few years ago, we visited an old cemetery. I know, an odd thing to do for most people, but I have always been drawn to the peaceful ...

A Very Late Passage from 3 Creative Studios
I had this quilt finished very shortly after getting the new word way back in February. When time came to post it, I got a virus on my computer which wiped out my Internet connection. The tech that spent hours with me trying to repair my connection managed to erase my hard drive. I now have a new computer with a new operating system that I’ve finally figured out how it works.
When I learned that Passage could refer to a portion of a painting highlighting the brushwork, I decided to try and replicate a small part of my ...

Rhythm from 3 Creative Studios
It all happened so fast! One idea came and I mentally worked it up and really enjoyed it, then discarded it. The next idea was compatible with my new found attitude towards my marital problem and I found a little peace in working on it. And now it is finished.

From Winter To Summer from 3 Creative Studios
Here’s how I linked the word passages with the images of the irises in various stages of bloom. To me, the blooming of my irises is the passing point between winter and summer, the passing of the seasons. The blooming also reminds me of the passage from bud to flower and reminds me of my daughter who is at the blooming stage. She’s not a child, yet not an adult either.
The irises are photos that I took of the irises in my garden. I printed the images onto to cotton fabric using Bubble Jet Set, then enhanced ...

To the Promised Land from 3 Creative Studios
This challenge”Passage” immediately made me think of Cecil B. DeMille’s The Ten Commandments. In my childhood, it’s a movie I watched every year around Easter time. The passage through the Red Sea
prefigured Baptism which is the doorway into the Christian church. So, with that, you can see the process of my quilt here. Thanks, Sue.
