Little Girls and Quilting from A Sentimental Quilter
Yippee! I'm excited to let you know that the second pattern for the American Schoolgirl Club - Martha Washington's Star Quilt - has been mailed out to many of you! I actually stayed focused and, even though it's late, it's still technically July so I consider that pretty good considering everything I went through this month. I got sick on July 1 and went to the ER that day. What an absolutely exhausting month it was for me. Hope this doesn't mean I'm getting old and I've lost my ability to bounce back like I ... -
I Love, I Love, I Love my Calendar Quilt! from A Sentimental Quilter
Can't get this song out of my head. Apologies to Neil Sedaka. Some of you may remember this old song from 1961. I'm too young myself; I only remember it because I had older sisters who listened to the radio a lot when I was a little kid, LOL . . .
"I love, I love, I love my calender girl
Yeah, sweet calender girl
I love, I love, I love my calender girl
Each and every day of the year."The 2011 American Patchwork & Quilting Calendar arrived while I was sick. There's a quilt of mine in it and ... -
Home Is Where the Healing Is from A Sentimental Quilter
I'm home and trying to take good care of myself. Where I belong. Where I can actually sort of relax and begin to heal. Take my vitamins. Cook my own food. Pet my dogs. Get some sleep. I can't tell you how being in the hospital for over a week and having every test under the sun stressed me out completely, and it's not over yet. I need several follow-up Drs appointments next week and they haven't ruled out the possibility of surgery. Keep a good thought. The medications I take 6 times a day make ... -
Kathy Update from A Sentimental Quilter
I am still in the hospital. My husband brought my laptop to me but I haven't felt much like going online. I am feeling better though and walking around. I had a serious intestinal infection that needed IV antibiotics to help clear it up. They are watching it and keeping me here until they are sure it's all better.
I was on a liquid diet for awhile and am now easing back into soft foods so that's progress. They're taking good care of me and drawing blood every 10 minutes it seems. Hopefully this nightmare will ... -
Where's Kathy? from A Sentimental Quilter
Kathy is in the hospital and will be returning to real life soon. So sorry, but American Schoolgirl Club is on hold for now. If any of you have friends who subscribed who do not read my blog, please let them know it will be delayed. -
Signs of Our Times from A Sentimental Quilter
I woke up early today to drive my husband to the train station. What a good wife. He's working downtown this week and taking the train is a lot easier than driving.Because I don't visit the train station myself too often, I had forgotten about this sign until I saw it again today. In 1979 my town in Illinois created a "Kissing Zone" and a "No-Kissing Zone" at the local train station in response to complaints about traffic jams at the station caused by couples taking too long to kiss their goodbyes at the drop-off point. Seriously ... -
Summer Shopping from A Sentimental Quilter
Every year when summer arrives my daughter dreams of redecorating her room. Her tastes change so fast I can't keep up. IKEA is the perfect place for teens to dream and get inspired without spending too much. Can't beat it for affordability. So yesterday we took a ride out there to see what was new and exciting in IKEAland.I told her we could paint her room this summer and get some accessories to finish the look. Can't decide, can't decide . . . .She's thinking of coral or green or blue for the walls. Believe it or ... -
Summer Means Fun from A Sentimental Quilter
I hadn't talked to my sister for a couple of weeks and when I called her yesterday she said: "Oh good, I was hoping nothing was wrong--you haven't updated your blog in a week!" No, it's just that summer's here and our power was out for awhile after the storms in the Chicago area last Friday. Also, my son came home from college for the summer last week and there's been a flurry of activity around here ever since.
Good flurry, but nonetheless . . . He brought a few people with him to stay with us for ... -
Pretty Squares from A Sentimental Quilter
Imagine my surprise when I went to my PO Box today and opened a package that had packets of charm squares just for me. Tara Lynn Darr knows what I love--precut squares! Pretty ones! So exciting. And perfect for my small scrappy quilts and especially good for making my doll quilt club quilts. Tara said she enjoyed my recent post about Ugly Squares and couldn't resist sending me some squares. She's hosting a Charm Square exchange on her website.Tara is so sweet. I buy bundles and charm squares from her whenever I run into her booth ... -
City Mouse, Country Mouse from A Sentimental Quilter
Remember that children's book? I used to love to read it to my kids when they were little. Lately, that's what I feel like as I'm going back and forth between Chicago and the suburbs a couple of times a week. I love the city and even though it takes up a lot of my precious quilting time, I am thoroughly enjoying visiting while my daughter undergoes her Physical Therapy routine and Dr appts. Today is not going to be fun however--the parade and rally for the Chicago Blackhawks (Stanley Cup champs) is scheduled for late morning ... -
What a Girl Wants from A Sentimental Quilter
A cupboard full of antique quilts?A new ipod because her son's ipod broke and--what a good mom--she gave him hers? (Actually I sold it to him to teach him a lesson--ipods don't grow on trees, LOL.)A few more puppies? What does a girl want? This girl just wants to feel better and is tired of attending physical therapy to help relieve her pain from herniated discs. Helping take care of her is mostly what keeps me from having a lot of free time to sew lately. Poor baby. Keep a good thought. . . She just wants ... -
Ugly Squares from A Sentimental Quilter
Poor me. I haven't had time to visit a quilt shop to buy fabric for awhile since I made the quilts from my book. I really really don't NEED any more fabric right now, you should see my baskets of leftovers. The projects I'm making now for the new Doll Quilt Club will all mostly be made from my scraps or fabric I already have. I did stock up on quite a few bundles and fat quarters at the Quilt Festival in Chicago in April and have barely touched those yet. Still, I have to admit I ... -
Kindred Spirits from A Sentimental Quilter
A few weeks ago I gave a talk and showed my quilts at a lovely little quilt shop in Denmark, Wisconsin by the name of Kindred Spirits. What a great name for a quilt shop. That name has stuck in my mind lately because it really resonated with me.A kindred spirit is someone who feels and thinks the way you do. If you happened upon my blog, got past the first paragraph and are reading this, then you are probably a kindred spirit of mine. As kindred spirits and quilters we all touch each other and are inspired by ... -
Still Playing with Dolls from A Sentimental Quilter
I had a few dolls that I loved growing up in the 1950s--Chatty Cathy and Barbie were two of my favorites. I still have both of them, even though my mom gave away my Barbie dolls (plus suitcase AND wardrobe, can you imagine?) to my nieces when I was in college. I didn't really care at the time, but one day when I was a little older and visiting my sister's home I saw one of MY precious Barbies and her clothes strewn all over the playroom floor. The girls obviously didn't care about them because they ... -
Dinner in the Garden from A Sentimental Quilter
Look what I found. I can't believe my luck. I saw these "English Rose" plates at Macy's last year and fell in love with them but I didn't really need new dinnerware and besides they were too expensive so I just drooled and forgot about them. I went back once to see if they were on sale, but no such luck.Yesterday, I stopped in at a Home Goods store near me looking for something else and lo and behold, there they were--about 1/3 the price! Of course I snatched them up because I knew it ... -
Quilt Out Loud Goes Historical/Hysterical from A Sentimental Quilter
I am wondering if any of you subscribe to QNN.tv's Quilt Out Loud online TV show hosted by Jodie Davis and Mark Lipinski? This month's episode features a Civil War theme and a visit to the Atlanta History Center, which I've been very patiently waiting to see. I think some of you may be interested if you like Civil War quilts and learning about the history surrounding them.
The best part? (Okay, maybe just for me. . .) Guess whose book featuring a diary from the Civil War was reviewed this month??A couple of months ago Jodie ... -
Devoted to Doll Quilts from A Sentimental Quilter
Many of you have already discovered the "pull" of small quilts. What is it about doll quilts that touches our hearts? I started quilting 10 years ago by making small quilts or doll quilts for my daughter's dolls. I wasn't very good at it at first, but I kept at it because it made me (and my daughter) feel so good to actually make something so small and still be able to call it a quilt. Not my first quilt . . . but an early one. I wasn't into "scrappy" yet. Too matchy for me now.At the time ... -
Chicago This Week from A Sentimental Quilter
Sounds like the title of a new morning TV show, doesn't it? "Chicago This Week," starring Kathy Tracy-- join her as she rediscovers the city of her birth . . . on foot. But today it rained. No walking or exploring outside for me. My hair frizzes up when it rains.I figure as long as I have to drive into the city a couple of times a week, which will considerably cut into my time to quilt and also won't give me much else to talk about for awhile, I might as well take you all along for company . . . .I ... -
Happy Mother's Day from A Sentimental Quilter
A very Happy Mother's Day to one and all!"All that I am, or hope to be, I owe to my angel mother" ~Abraham Lincoln(If only we didn't have to wait until they became president for them to realize this . . . )I finally got one of those mini applique irons that everyone else has . . ."It kills you to see them grow up. But I guess it would kill you quicker if they didn't." ~Barbara Kingsolver
When she was about 12 and we were going through a particularly difficult period (and, if I recall, she didn't like ... -
Busy Week from A Sentimental Quilter
This week I am finishing up the first edit of the pages and illustrations for the new book--can't divulge the title yet. The pages have been edited by my editors and now it's my turn to go through them and add anything or make any changes. The next version I see will be the page proofs, probably this summer. That part is very exciting--to see the layout and design of pages with photos. My publisher has the quilts to be able to photograph them and I've almost forgotten what they look like!Everybody's making pink and ... -
A Civil War Doll from A Sentimental Quilter
A few weeks ago I visited some antique stores. There was a doll shop nearby. Like many women, I've always had a special place in my heart for dolls--particularly the dolls I played with as a child. This store had every doll you could imagine.
It's overwhelming to see all the different dolls when you first walk in. Do you see one from your childhood? My sister loved Kewpie dolls as a child. As I was talking to the shop manager about quilts, she asked me if I'd like to see a Civil War quilt and doll ... -
Finis! from A Sentimental Quilter
Yesterday I finished the quilting and put the binding on my challenge quilt. Yay! What a lot of fun. It's not my favorite little quilt but I still think it's cute. I needed to stretch myself a bit by working outside of my reproduction "box." I am looking forward to getting another challenge started soon and then it'll be back to 19th century repro fabrics I think!I really like how the quilting turned out and oh those dots!!!
I don't ever plan on winning any prizes in a show for my hand quilting--it is just ...
