Pretending I am in Alaska from All Things Quilty
Today I finished a customer's quilt that is an homage to the land and wildlife of Alaska. This one was made by Pam, using some panel prints mixed with warm glowing patchwork.
Can you tell that there is stitch-in-the-ditch quilting and lots of diagonal lines?Have you ever known me to quilt like that?
Magic Eight-ball says: The answer is No!
Pam assembled the quilt sandwich and did all the straight lines on the quilt. Then she turned it over to me to do something with the prints and those gazillion borders.
The outside borders got a leafy vine ... -
Chicago, Part II from All Things Quilty
Here is the continuation of my blog about our Chicago trip. We stayed in a hotel on Michigan Avenue and were able to walk everywhere we went. I very much admired the garden plantings on both sides of the street. Most were either raised on concrete platforms, or had low wrought iron fences surrounding them to deter doggies. After I returned from the boat tour of the river and lake, I walked down to Millennium Park and the Chicago Institute of Art. It was really getting hot by then. You can see the back of the Cloud Arch, better known ... -
Not Very Quilty Visit to Chicago from All Things Quilty
Art and Architecture: Yes
Quilting Shops/Shows/Sightings/Purchases: No
Having said that, I will share with you some highlights of my past few days in Chicago, where Mr. Quilty and I spent the last few days. We were hoping to avoid the oppressive heat here in North Carolina, but it followed us to Chi-Town where they experienced their hottest day of the year on Friday. Our hour and a half flight from Raleigh-Durham was actually an eight-hour trip from the time we left home to the time we got from the airport to downtown . There were travel delays due ... -
Fun at Mary Jo's from All Things Quilty
We had an easy trip to Gastonia. As soon as we got to the exit for Mary Jo's, a black cloud appeared above, along with thunder, lightning, and rain. I was given an hour to whirl through the store, and when I came out, the rain was just ending. I was looking for red and gold fabrics for a project I am contemplating. I got some yardage and some fat quarters ($1.39/yard) and other large scraps ($.25).Then I broswed through the scrap bags of laces and trims. One 99-cent bag had 27 pieces of lace about ... -
Fun With Feathers from All Things Quilty
Fun With Feathers, 26" x 26", 2010Here is a little quilt OF MY OWN that I finished yesterday. In fact, I was stitching down the binding during the guild meeting last night.I made this quilt for the Carolina Longarm Association quilt show challenge. All participants got a kit with the fabric and instructions for making the exact same quilt top. Then, we could quilt it any way we chose. The idea is that they will be hung together at the show, and viewers will see that the quilting makes a remarkable difference in the finished product.I started ... -
Heritage Day Auction Quilts from All Things Quilty
Tonight was one of the summer meetings of the Capital Quilters Guild in Raleigh. We have only been having summer meetings for a couple of years now- in the past, the guild year ran from September through June. Tonight was the night to turn in Challenge quilts for the Heritage Days auction. For the past several years, we have had an October quilt auction to benefit a charity. Last year, we raised $11,000 for Military Missions in Action, which helps provide housing accommodations for disabled veterans. Mike Dorman again provided poignant stories of the work they have done to ... -
Star Light, Star Bright from All Things Quilty
Thanks for your patience during my no-sew period while I tried to avoid heat stroke by staying out of the upstairs of my house. Although our air conditioning was supposed to be fixed on Monday, they had to come back out on Tuesday and work another four or five hours. Finally, today it was cool upstairs and my sewing room did not feel like a sweat shop! Here is the first of two quilts for my customer Pam. It is a pattern called Star Light, Star Bright, a very scrappy and fun quilt. Pam chose a dark purple thread which ... -
Trying Out Zentangles from All Things Quilty
Yes, it is still very hot here in central North Carolina, and the HVAC guys have been here since 9:00 AM installing a new system to replace part of our sixteen-year old air conditioning units. I got up at about 6:30 AM in order to clear off the steps and landing to my finished attic rooms so they could install the new duct work and returns up there. We are told that the new system will be much more efficient, which is good. Usually it is too hot or too cold upstairs.
Anyway, I have been staying downstairs ... -
Kids and Mountain Fun from All Things Quilty
We got back today from another fun-filled mountain weekend. This time we were joined by our older son and the two grand-kids. Great weather except for some much-needed rain on Friday night. We spent the whole weekend fishing in the pond, floating in the creek, and going on Gator rides to the top of the mountain. This time the kids ran all the way down...great idea for getting them sleepy before bed!My nephew Jason and his family had stayed on at my sister's place since the Fourth of July. I loved watching little Lacy doing her one-year ... -
New Book and Fourth of July Recap from All Things Quilty
All Things Quilty checking back in after a week off. It is hot here. The past two afternoons, this was the reading on our indoor-outdoor thermometer.Yes, 109 degrees outside. The afternoon sun bakes our front porch, so it is probably hotter there than the general temperature. But...our air conditioning unit that cools the upstairs broke yesterday. And my Gammill is on the second floor, and my sewing/painting rooms are in the finished attic rooms on the third floor. I have been reading a lot the past two days!Even though I got a lot of new quilting ... -
Flowers from All Things Quilty
Here is Beverly's finished quilt with die-cut flowers lined up, marching in rows. The cutting garden I planted in front of our porch on Easter weekend also has flowers marching along. I am especially happy with the marigolds and sunflowers, all of which I ordered from Gurney's.The sunflowers are about five-six feet tall, with assorted color schemes. I like the yellow and brown combination. And this orange/yellow flower is rather splendid. There are many heads blooming on the same stalk without the need for staking. The Fourth of July is approaching, so here is a little ... -
Trying Out Fabric Paper...and Another Collage from All Things Quilty
Continuing my journey in mixed media, I painted and stamped a canvas board, added some collaged papers and lace, and drew all over it with black ink. The brown shading is done with Conte crayon. The text at the lower right was on a bit of scrapbook paper. It is the first three lines from a poem by Thomas Campion:
There is a Garden in her face,
Where Roses and white Lillies grow ;
A heau'nly paradise is that place.
I chose to interpret the poem quite literally! I like the colors and layering on this one, but might do ... -
All Things Quilty in the Mountains from All Things Quilty
It did not take long to find something quilty to show you from our trip to the mountains this weekend! The Upper Mountain Agriculture Research Station has added another quilt barn to the two existing ones on the farm. This one is a very striking star pattern on the barn on our side of Hwy 88.It was so nice to get to the mountains where the temps always are about fifteen degrees cooler. We went up to the top of the mountain and sat in the Christmas tree farm, where there is always a nice breeze. We watched the ... -
Yellow and Blue from All Things Quilty
I was wrong when I said yesterday that it would be 101 degrees. Our home thermometer registered 105!Here is the quilt I worked on yesterday...one of those die-cut flower quilts made with the Big Shot machine. This one is a cool and lovely combination of blue, yellow, and white. Very cool and serene looking!I only finished one pass, as these take quite awhile to do. You have to stitch around each of the three circles that make up each floral applique. I am free-motion stitching leaves, flowers, vines and swirls in the background and borders. This combination ... -
Re-Vision Quilt Project: The Beginning from All Things Quilty
While I was at the beach, my awesome quilt group, Cyberbee, had an all-day meeting during which the Re-Vision Quilt project was launched.
We have been toying with the idea for this swap for a long time, since Michelle read about the idea on Judy Rys' blog.
I sent my project (a Ricky Tims Harmonic Convergence quilt top) along in a stapled brown paper bag, and Jean picked up a brown bag project for me. When I found out it was from Mary Corcoran, I got excited because Mary is an awesome quilter who uses vibrant color combinations.
Yesterday, Jean ... -
Birthday Queen from All Things Quilty
I discovered that I like being the Birthday Queen! My darling husband showered me with nice things, including these quilt-related items that I am looking forward to reviewing. I think I will have enough new ideas and techniques for a lifetime! We discovered the Amazon Wish List last year, which allows you to add items from any web site to your wish list. When I find something of interest while reading e-mail or browsing, I add it to my wish list. When Amazon talks, people listen! We went to dinner with Dave and Emily at The Melting Pot. This is ... -
Big Six-O from All Things Quilty
Today is my sixtieth birthday. Yikes! How did I get so old so fast?I got a great card from BIL and SIL Richard and Phylis at the beach last week.I got a good laugh out of this. So far, I can relate to Rocky, Wrinkly, Squinty, and Saggy; but I'm not looking forward to the others except maybe Nappy. :)Here is another great gift from Dave and Emily. I love the color combination, which is more aqua and coral than the picture shows. Dave pointed out the special stitching- a true son of a quilter!Tonight we ... -
Stitch Alchemy book from All Things Quilty
I have a wonderful new book that was an early birthday present from my son and daughter-in-law. Stitch Alchemy by Kelli Perkins is all about combining fabric and paper for mixed-media art. The author refers to the resulting product as paper-cloth. I have also heard it called fabric paper. This is a process that I am anxious to try out!
Why paper-cloth? For one thing, you can create colors and designs that are uniquely original, rather than depend on commercial fabric. For another, you can cut paper-cloth and applique it without turning under the edges. Paper-cloth can be stitched, painted ... -
Fathers' Day Love from All Things Quilty
My father has seven children- all of us are in the above picture, which also includes my Aunt Billie. And every one of us think we had the best father in the world. That is saying something!
Dad has 14 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren so far. That's a lot of father's day love! And here is some Father's Day love for my husband. He is a big man to look up to, and our children and grandchildren certainly do. Well, except Dave is now about four inches taller. Our oldest son, Bryson, is now a single father ... -
We're Ba-a-a-ck from All Things Quilty
We left our rented beach cottage on 40th Street, Sunset Beach, behind this morning.
We will miss being with our kids, grandkids, and grand-dog. And the other four houses of Turners and McBrayers in the neighborhood. Both of the grands were so delightful and well-behaved.It was a wonderful week, very hot but usually with nice breezes. The one-lane drawbridge to Sunset Bridge caught us on the way home. It opens on the hour for pleasure craft, that have to wait for the bridge to swing open. We had to wait an additional twenty-one minutes while sailboats and other craft ... -
Fun at the Beach from All Things Quilty
The beach house does have WiFi, so here are a few pictures of our vacation so far. The first night is always Hat Night. This is my grandson Avery in his daddy's hat.Sunday was my granddaughter Lily's fourth birthday. She got a new dressand a princess outfitCan you tell that I enjoy having a little girl finally? Here she is in her mermaid tail. They are charging us extra for this being a "dog-friendly" house, so we decided to let Dave and Emily bring their little dog, Roo. So far he is being an excellent ... -
Big Project finished before the Beach Trip from All Things Quilty
Here is Kathy's Thimbleberries Garden quilt on the long-arm machine. It has patchwork block mixed with a faux-applique floral print block, and of course lots of borders. This will be a raffle quilt for the Hope Lutheran Church in Wake Forest. Kathy wanted an overall design, so I did floral motifs and leaves.Since I was doing free-motion quilting, it was possible to try to add design elements in strategic places even though this was an edge-to-edge. In the faux-applique blocks, I echoed around the leaves and flowers without starting or stopping. I think it looks pretty ...
