What Are Quilters Blogging About Today?

  • Something new (to me) from 501 Quilt Blocks

There's a blog where women are encouraged to journal reflecting on the simpler things in life.  Today is my first day so here goes:

    For Today… September 6, 2010
Outside My Window…the sun is shining brightly and there's a gentle breeze
I am thinking…that fall is almost here
I am thankful  for…a cooler day
From the kitchen...I'm making my favorite chocolate cookies
I am wearing…shorts and a tee shirt (as usual)
    I am creating…an applique quilt
I am going…to watch Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back so I can converse with ...
  • Binding Done from 501 Quilt Blocks

Now that the binding is done, I can show you the 'Christmas Quilt'.  I've lost some of the pattern in the blocks because I didn't use enough contrast in the greens, but it's colorful.

Not sure what's on the agenda today.  I intended to go out to the camp to continue cleaning but I did too much yesterday and am paying for it today.  My back is screaming ...

  • Off... from 501 Quilt Blocks

To Corey's camp that is.  She and her husband just bought a camp and they're up visiting for the day so we all went out.  The kids went swimming while Corey and I cleaned, cleaned, cleaned.  There's a lot more to do but it looks better already.  I'm going out tomorrow to do some more.  They gave me the key since I live the closest.  (we joked about it being my camp!)

It seems as though I've been sewing all week but I only have a partial lap quilt to show for it.  It took ...
  • Could it be? from 501 Quilt Blocks

...I sit too much?  My back is killing me.  I hurt it weeks ago while trying to put the leaf in my table.  It took awhile to get better and I was feeling pretty good but I must have tweeked it again.  The only thing I've done is lift my sewing machine from the table to the floor and back again.  And sit -- sewing.

I finished another quilt this weekend.  I love the colors-mauves, maroon and brown.  I tried a new approach to the quilting.  I marked the top (which I've never done) and free motion quilted most ...
  • The Edge Ruler from 501 Quilt Blocks

Some have asked that I let them know what I think of my new Edge Ruler.  Here goes.  The major selling point for this ruler is that it's supposed to sharpen your rotary blade as you cut.  I'm very disappointed.  With a fairly new blade, I made about 10 cuts and had to replace the blade.  Not good.  The ruler has a frosted  finish that is slip resistant however I have trouble seeing the fabric through the frosted finish..  If I cut dark fabric on a light mat and cut a light fabric on a dark mat, I ...
  • Blue Flower Quilt from 501 Quilt Blocks

Am I supposed to name my quilts?  I notice others do but I wonder about a sampler?  I guess I do name them sorta.  I call this one Blue Flower quilt.  There was the Harvest quilt, Green quilt, Cat quilt.  The names are really a reference for me.  I finished quilting this last night.  And yes, I do stop to eat!

  • Busy! Busy! from 501 Quilt Blocks

I wrote about being lazy then got my butt in gear.  I've finished 6 blocks.  They look like black & white in the pictures but are really dark brown & cream.  I've set them aside for a quilt at another time.

    dark brown & cream

Look what I just received from UPS.

Makes me want to drop what I'm doing just to try it out.  However my table is being used at the moment.

    Maybe Friday.

Have a great day!  Happy Quilting!
  • Eye Candy? from 501 Quilt Blocks

Don't be fooled.  I don't mean men!  I mean quilts, fabrics, colors!  What quilter doesn't get excited over such things?  In a group I belong to, we discussed how much we love to look at stacks of quilts.  I took a picture of the ones I've made over the past two months.

    my quilts

I'm just enjoying them until it's time to give as gifts or donations.  It seems kinda silly to donate now when it's in the 80's and 90's but when cold weather comes...

I finished two more applique ...
  • Pink Sewing Machine? from 501 Quilt Blocks

I've been working for the past two days quilting the snowman quilt.  I thought I washed the 'reddish' fabric pretty thoroughly, I even used the color catchers but when I finished with the quilt I noticed the bed of my sewing machine is now pinkish.  I tried to wash it off and was able to get some of it.  I'm tempted to try something like SoftScrub.  I think it might work.  We'll see.

As I said, I finished the snowman quilt and washed it again with color catchers.  Here it is finished:  I love how crinkly it ...
  • Thursday already? from 501 Quilt Blocks

When you live alone and don't work, it's hard to remember what day of the week it is.  This quilting quest keeps me so busy, the days just fly by.  It's almost the weekend again.

I put together a top this morning.  It's very easy when the blocks have already been made.  Here's what it looks like:

I also finished another applique block.

  • Fun (at last!) from 501 Quilt Blocks

I spent most of the morning, washing, drying and ironing clothing and mucho fabric.  Tedious.  Then I thought I'd do a few blocks.  I pieced the final rendition of the QOV block and packaged it up for mailing to Montana.  I forgot to take a picture.  Very happy with the way it turned out.   I cut out and pieced one 4 inch block that I was not overly excited about.  Don't look too close or you'll see mistakes but it does have an interesting optical illusion to it.

    The other day I watched a ...
  • Diet and Exercise from 501 Quilt Blocks

I've been following Weight Watchers for a year now.  I've lost 25 lbs.  I reached goal 4 months ago.  I was so excited.  I haven't been at this weight in 10 years.  It hasn't been easy.  Especially now that summer is here.  I love ice cream.  And not just any ice cream.  Ben & Jerry's Vanilla Heath Bar Crunch.  I've managed to keep it to a minimum but I have indulged.  At times, too much.  Needless to say, I'm trying to find a happy medium.  I've been up and down 2 lbs. since ...
  • Make it up from 501 Quilt Blocks

I've noticed in quite a few blogs that most quilters have a design wall or whatever to plan their quilts.  I'm afraid I'm just not that organized.  I don't really have much of a plan for my quilts.  I mostly make it up as I go along.  I group similar colored blocks in groups of six and make lap quilts from them.  Most of my quilts look very similar.   Long story short, I finished the green quilt today.  I was a little more brave on the quilting and added some stippling in the white sashing.  I ...
  • Excuse me... from 501 Quilt Blocks

You'll have to excuse me if my posts are doubled or incomplete.  My new computer's mouse pad or touch pad or whatever they call it now is so sensitive, I keep losing or scrolling or closing when I don't intend to.  I usually use my right hand to move the cursor and my left hand to click the left button but I find that if my left hand is even hovering over the pad, I can end up who knows where.  I was going to put a cute quiz in this post but in all the confusion ...
  • A new day from 501 Quilt Blocks

As you may have noticed, I am fixated on the QOV block.  I've been totally dissatisfied with what I've done so far.  Yesterday, I purchased my FINAL selection of fabric.  (I know - I need to get a life!)  Below are the fabrics:

    green and cream
    I finished another applique block:

    Donna's Nosegay

I purchased a new rotary cutter.  Fiskars.  It's the brand I had before but the configuration is a little different.  I don't know how they expect you to make a good decision when you can't try it out first.  I also ordered ...

  • Quilt of Valor (QOV) from 501 Quilt Blocks

For weeks now the online group I belong to has been planning another Quilt of Valor (QOV).  The quilts are for those servicepersons and veterans touched by war.  The last one done by this group was in patriotic colors.  You can see a photo at Quilter's Passion QOV   It turned out so well that we decided to do another.  Our colors this time are based on Corian Healing Colors.  Finding just the right fabric was so nervewracking for me.  I've never done such an important project before.  But I did find one I liked representing an earth tone ...
  • Beautiful Award from 501 Quilt Blocks

My daughter, Corey gave me this award.  Let me tell you I'm surprised and secretly tickled.  I've never had an award before.  Pretty cool!  Now let me see if I remember the rules:  1) post the award on your blog, 2) link back to the person who gave it to you, 3) give it to whoever you want to.  So I'm giving it to Betty  who has been a big help to me as I learn to do applique.  She says, it's the blind leading the blind.  But isn't that how we learn.  Sharing makes ...
  • Duh! from 501 Quilt Blocks

I've been working on applique lately and have used a needle with a large hole to sew with.  Even with reading glasses I have a hard time threading needles.  I've tried those little wire needle threaders but I have a hard time seeing the hole to thread the threader.  Needless to say, the longer, thicker needle has made sewing a little difficult (and I have the sore thumb to prove it!).  Last night it occurred to me that I have the solution.

About a month ago, I purchased these needles for a different use from Day Style Designs ...
