Moving Right Along from Always a Piece of Me
Continuing along on my wave of motivation after finishing my first Christmas flimsy, I got started on another one last night. I cut 16 of the 20 initial blocks needed for the Five, Ten, Twenty pattern I am using for A2's boyfriend's quilt. I'm just waiting for the fabric for the last four blocks to come in to finish cutting. I decided on four different kona solids to use for the last four blocks, the backing, and a scrappy binding. They (hopefully!) match the colors of the electric guitars. There is so much going on in the ...

One Thing, One Week Challenge Complete! from Always a Piece of Me
With a last minute push late Sunday night, I managed to finally get all the parts assembled for A4's quilt top. I will warn you, this quilt is not too easy on the eyes. The bright and crazy fabrics probably won't sit well with everyone's tastes, but my baby sister will absolutely love it. Of that, I have no doubts.I have even managed to keep her from seeing it. She asked me one day last week if I would get her quilt done before she went to college - the child isn't even in high school ...

One Thing, One Week Challenge from Always a Piece of Me
This week I'm participating in the One Week, One Thing Challenge to help get me back to quilting.
I'm going to be working on one of the Christmas quilts in the lineup as I haven't made much progress on them yet. My goal: finish piecing A4's quilt top by next Monday. Hopefully this will be just what I need to get me going on these Christmas quilts!

All of my Sewing Time from Always a Piece of Me
...has recently been taken up by making black&gold hair accessories. I was selling them to the little league cheerleaders, but popularity has been spreading and I keep having to make more and more and more of the headbands. My sewing time has been limited due to a family reunion, accompanying my sister to college visits, redecorating (including stripping wallpaper!) the living room, a special project my grandparents needed completed, and general life so the several dozen headbands I've whipped up have taken all my sewing time for the past two weeks or more. I'm hoping to get ... -
Expanding My Repertoire from Always a Piece of Me
I was in Hobby Lobby one day a couple weeks back searching for something for my mom when I happened to notice they had all Simplicity patterns on sale for 99 cents. I've wanted to try my hand at clothes recently, but haven't known where to start. I decided to just jump right in and pick a pattern. I quickly flipped through as the store was closing in 10 minutes and found a simple looking dress pattern which I knew my sister would love. She tends to wear a lot of dresses and hasn't found a new ...

My Christmas List from Always a Piece of Me
I have five quilts I need to have done by Christmas. One for each sister (3), one for my mom, and one for my sister's boyfriend. Each of the five is in a different stage of the process.
A2's quilt fabric is in line for the wash.A3's quilt fabric I showed you a couple months ago. I am making some finishing touches to the pattern I designed for this quilt before cutting it up.

A4's quilt is in the process of being pieced. My mom's quilt is on pause. It is the black and ...

Memory Scraps Quilt from Always a Piece of Me
On Monday afternoon, I found out I was one of the winners of a Memory Scraps charm pack over at Just Ramblin'. Thanks to the amazingly fast U.S.P.S. the package traveled half way across the country and arrived in my mailbox yesterday. How can anyone not like the mailman when they bring treats like this...I happened to have the fabric pictured at the bottom, which I think coordinates with the charms quite perfectly, in my stash. There should be enough to use for backing plus some.
Combined with these scraps from the magical box of squares ...

My Fabulous Failure from Always a Piece of Me
I was inspired a few days ago to create a little makeup bag out of some of the 3" squares I have accumulated. Not having a pattern, I decided to just wing it. I pulled 6 random blue squares and 6 random red squares and stitched the front and back of the bag together. I managed to piece sides and a bottom on though I'm sure there must be a better way to construct a bag than how I did it. I made a lining and put the whole thing together only to discover that there was no good ... -
Merry and Masculine from Always a Piece of Me
Wanting another quick finish, I went ahead and made a boy version of the Fun and Feminine quilt. These charms came from the same box of fabric in my stash which is turning out to be one of my best fabric finds!
Precuts make piecing a breeze. I will say though that I'm learning the importance of precise cutting. Not all the squares in either of these quilts were an exact 5x5. It is much more difficult to get things to line up when they aren't. It is also difficult to get an accurate 1/4" seam when ...

Fun and Feminine from Always a Piece of Me
With the remaining purple and green striped squares along with some other precuts from my box I put this together over the past two days.
I know it is just a little thing, but it was fast and it was fun which gets me motivated to make time for more quilting. My mom and sisters think it is great. They are loving the quilting on the back.
Usually I lean toward bright and bold colors, but something about these muted colors is just speaking to me right now. I think it is great how feminine it looks with the pinks ...

Patches for Lissa from Always a Piece of Me
Still not much sewing going on here, but I'm finding little bits of time here and there to squeeze something in. A couple days ago I read about Patches for Lissa and decided to find some time to make a few blocks to contribute to the quilt. I had just received a box of squares in the mail the day before with some fabrics that were perfect and I added a few more squares from yardage in my stash. It was hard to stop once I got started since its for a good cause and I was enjoying myself ... -

My New Project from Always a Piece of Me
A peek of my new project (which is much more vibrant in real life)...It is a lap quilt for me. I keep working on projects for others and suddenly realized how much I wanted a quilt for myself. Like my mother, you may wonder "Well isn't the log cabin quilt for you?" The answer is yes, but it is for my full size bed which is currently in storage. I want a quilt I can cuddle in when I read or watch tv. Something fun and pretty. I saw these charm squares on ebay and immediately fell in ...

More Eye Candy from Always a Piece of Me
The stash for my color wheel quilt is slowly growing. The four bottom are new.Fabric for a quilt for sister 3. She wanted yellow, pink, and animal prints. I've pulled my inspiration from one of my favorites on flickr for the pattern. Simple, but striking.
Another yard for sister 1's boyfriend's quilt. Going to use my five, ten, twenty pattern from my giveaway winnings from Robin's birthday. I'm thinking maybe some solids would go well with this and the guitar words fabric I found.
I'm thinking the goal will be to make them ...

Musical Pinwheels top is finished! from Always a Piece of Me
Haven't gotten much sewing done lately. Have got to have a lot of family time though which is nice. Lots more is scheduled in the next week so I probably still won't get much sewing done. I have managed to purchase quite a bit of new fabric in the last week though. You've seen some, but there is lots more headed my way :-) Gotta love sales, clearance, discount codes, and ebay!
One thing I did get done was the top for my Musical Pinwheels quilt. The border fabric got washed, cut, and attached. I still need to ... -
Big Sale, Big Finds from Always a Piece of Me
As scheduled, I made my way to my LQS yesterday for their 'date matching' sale. Not only was all regularly priced merchandise 25% off since it was the 25th, but they also had clearance merchandise up to 75% off.
So what did I find?
Backing fabric for 'Musical Pinwheels'...Backing fabric for my log cabin bed quilt...
Fabric for a colorwheel quilt to be made in the future and a spool of thread for piecing...
The prices and service were great, they even offered me a free half yard on both backings since they were the end of each bolt ... -
Log Cabin Re-visited from Always a Piece of Me
Earlier this week I was inspired to pull this back out...I laid it out and decided I needed to add one more row to get it to the dimensions I needed so I made these...
Tonight, I suddenly felt a need to look again. After doing a couple calculations on the size of the quilt top and the size of the bed the quilt is intended for, I realized I need to add one column, not one row.
Now, I'm bothered because the design is going to be off-centered if I add a column and I'm unsure ... -
Musical Pinwheels Progress from Always a Piece of Me
Musical Pinwheels is beginning to come together :-) I found another music themed white fabric while at Joann's shopping for Colt's quilt so I was able to put together the four additional white pinwheels I needed earlier this week. After experimenting with a couple arrangements, I decided this one showcased each of the four prints well and didn't lose the pinwheel look of each block (which happened when I put too many of the same color pinwheels together). What I've put together thus far is a bit smaller than I had hoped, but I'm thinking I ... -
Disappearing Nine Patch Complete! from Always a Piece of Me
The pink and purple disappearing nine patch is all done! I had plenty of sitting time this weekend while I worked a garage sale and visited with family so I decided it was a good time to handstitch the binding. Slow and steady gets the job done. It took me three days of stitching on and off for short amounts of time, but its so beautiful how could I complain? Also, two finishes so close together feel so rewarding! Gets me motivated to have some more real soon.
The quilt measures 34"x41 1/2" before washing (there is a ... -
One Night Wonder from Always a Piece of Me
About two weeks ago I offered to my mom and sister that I would make a quilt for their friend's new little one. At the time they didn't think much of the idea. They just sort of ignored it and said they'd go get a gift later. Fastforward to Thursday night when they still didn't have a baby gift that they needed for Friday. All of the sudden they liked the quilt suggestion. My sister and I ran out to Joann Fabrics and spent what felt like forever looking for fabrics. We finally found some sports ... -
Musical Pinwheels from Always a Piece of Me
My most recent project is a pinwheel quilt for a family friend. She is a pianist and has generously assisted my sisters and I over the years with vocal auditions without ever accepting anything in return. I was inspired to make a quilt for her when I saw the black musical note fabric a few months back during a sale I happened upon. The pink fabric I had purchased for another project which has since changed directions. I really liked the look of the black dot swirls with the musical note fabric so I began cutting and sewing. The white ...
