What Are Quilters Blogging About Today?

  • A Hershey Garden Reprieve from Spring Water Designs

While we were in Hershey, we did something I'd never done before on any prior visits ~ we stopped by the Hershey Gardens.  This is definitely worth doing!  We hopped on the shuttle and went up after shopping at the show's Vendor Mall all afternoon.  There are acres of beautiful gardens to walk, including a child's garden and a butterfly house (the butterfly house closes at 5:00 by the way, so if you want to see butterflies go before 5:00 p.m.)

The view is really cool.  It's up on a hill overlooking Hershey Park ...
  • yinyang-brown.insidepocket from Patchworkstuen

  • Tote Bag Swap from Kim Sherrod Studio

Look what I found waiting for me in my mailbox? My swap partner Nancy made me this beautiful tote bag and some goodies to go with it. Thank you so much Nancy! I LOVE it.

  • Oak and Acorn Banner from cottagequiltdesigns

    Oak and Acorn Banner
Are you looking for an autumn themed banner to make for your home? Oak and Acorn Banner was designed for Quiltmania magazine and was featured in their fall issue of last year. Now you can purchase the pattern here in our online catalog. Look in the appliqué section to find it.
The size is 21″ x 48″. I used a hand appliqué method to make the blocks but the directions give fusible yardage and the templates are reversed too. The fabrics used were my leftovers from the Autumn Splendor collection by Kaufman fabrics.
Be watching for more seasonal banners!
  • Itty Bitty Babies from Insights From SewCalGal

Natalia Bonner, of Piece of Quilt, is very talented.  I love this quilt she has designed and created and I'm very excited that she wrote such a great tutorial that has been shared on Moda Bake Shop.

This quilt is so adorable. I love the words in the design.    Thus, this goes with pleasure into my list of favorite tutorials.  I hope you like it too.

And I hope you'll visit Natalia at her wonderful blog

  • curvy strips from Say CHEESE! Bumble Beans Inc.

I think I am done with curvy strips for now. Not sure where these go from here. Considering a darker color for between the strips.
  • a dress to eat ice cream in from comfortstitching

    037
The bad thing about having finished a dress for little miss C last week is once I finish one, I immediately get notified that it isn't fair and that I need to start on one for not quite as little lady A to even up the tally.  Cue a hurriedly bought pattern for the Oliver and S 'ice cream dress' - perfect for wearing whilst eating (but not spilling) ice cream in.

I cannot rate Oliver and S patterns highly enough!!!  If you have ever thought about making one, DO IT!!!  The attention to detail is exquisite and each step ...

  • Stash-Buster Birthday Banner Tutorial from Gen X Quilters

It’s Birthday Week at my house (my boys’ birthdays are 8 days part) and this year I was inspired to make the house festive with fabric. I kept seeing adorable banners on others’ blogs, but I didn’t want to spend money on it. Ta-dah! Here’s my version of the Birthday Banner – it truly uses up the scraps.

Makes 9 banner flags spaced 3.5” apart.

    MATERIALS:

    1 – 3 yd. wide bias tape

    3/4 yd. assorted scrap fabric

    Template plastic

    Thread coordinating with bias tape

    DIRECTIONS:

    1. Take an 8.5” x 11” sheet of paper, marking ...
  • Primitive Gatherings from Just Say Sew

What fun to discover that one of my favorite quilt shops to visit each year at the Houston Quilt Festival is located just 16 miles from Oshkosh where Dear Hubby and I went to the Air Show!  So I forced him into a side trip a few days before the Air Show began – and we were ducking the mud and water anyway (see previous post about Sploshkosh.)

All of my friends always visit their booth in Houston too.  Primitive Gatherings has the coolest wool patterns and kits.  And punch needle too.  But mostly GREAT wool stuff!  (A great online shop ...

  • Getting To Know You from Quilts + Color

I have spent a fair amount of time the last few weeks getting my new computer and other devices set up and working. Today I thought we were done. Not quite so!

One of the issues we ran into was the fact that colors that looked close to perfect on my old computer showed up almost neon on my new computer. We made 2 changes to the color system.

It was a challenge to figure out how to really see what was happening.

I decided the best way to evaluate things was to take a picture of this particular quilt ...
  • Mighty Bright from Patchwork Times by Judy Laquidara

Need extra light when reading, doing hand work or machine work? Need a magnifier too? Here's my recommendation.
  • from Artfabrik

    Thread-u-cation Thursdays: Variegated Threads
Almost all the threads I use for my hand embroidery are of variegated colors. True, some colorways I dye are colors that are very close in value (like Oranges above) but most change colors every 2-3 inches like the colorway Moss (seen below).
So why choose variegated pearl cotton thread for my hand embroidery? Changes in color value or hue make the surface more active and tantalize the eye. I'm making small quilts and I want to draw the viewer closer and hold their attention. Color is the first thing we notice when we look ...
  • IMG_2513wtmk from Quilt Obsession

For a number of reasons, I wanted a good photograph or two of Chintz Circles taken before giving it to my aunt on Sunday.  So on Wednesday a friend, who is a professional photographer, took some shots.  It was a fascinating experience.  The photos I’m showing in this blog were taken by us — not by the professional.  But some of the photos taken by him will eventually show up here.  The photo above was taken of the photographer checking some of his equipment and the area where the quilt was going to be hung for its pictures.

    This shot ...

  • And still another hot sticky day........ from Exuberant Color

No quilty picures today.  It was all dust cloth and vacuum cleaner yesterday.  While I was waiting for my company to arrive I decided to put a new picture in the header.  Then I thought I would just audition some of the new templates.  Mistake!!  I couldn't get back to my old template.  I was stuck.  Then I called Mel (Fibermania) and we tried to get the old one back but then I lost all of my sidebar info.  Yikes!!  Not fun!  I clicked back on the new template and my stuff was back, whew!  But I still can ...
  • Thursday Is Market Day from Hills Creek Quilter

Well, technically I suppose it means going to the market to get groceries, but my idea of a fun market day is going shopping with friends at a quilt shop!

Here's a quick slideshow of a recent visit to Quilters Corner (I really wish they'd put an apostrophe in their name...) in Ithaca, NY. (If you have trouble viewing it, try a different browser...that's all I can suggest.)

  • Block 11 Jelly Roll Quilt Along from Mid-Ohio Quilter

Each weeks' block, is my favorite and this one is no exception. Love it.
  • UPDATE AND WITCH HAZEL from Sheri Howard

Thank you everyone for your kind comments and concern! As you can see, I am making progress. I only have one brace, one crutch and I can flex both feet. I am getting weary of sitting around, and wearing this brace is very HOT! I know....a cast would be much hotter, so I am thankful! Now about Witch Hazel....you can buy it in the stores by the rubbing alcohol: (although it is more expensive.) If you soak a wash cloth with Witch Hazel and lay the wash cloth on the bruised area for 5-10 minutes 3-4 times @ day ...
  • Further Development from Quilts, Grandkids and Delphiniums

I had another happy few hours in the sewing room today, working on the boat I started in the unstructured piecing workshop. Here is progress. I have pieced boat sails down the left side and across the bottom using the method we were taught for the stars.

The top and bottom borders are not yet completely pieced or sewn to the rest of the quilt top. In fact the medium triangle in the top right hand corner is just folded and pinned to the dark one. I am in two minds about that, whether it should be a light one ...
  • Facebook and Luck from The Quilting Booklady

Like many folks, I have a Facebook page. I'm a bit reluctant to post on my Wall, but I do read and connect with family and friends that way. Last week, I received an e-mail from my friend Gretch with the subject line "You Lucky Dog..." Grechen had discovered before I did that I had won a gift certificate from the Fat Quarter Shop on their Facebook page. How cool is that!!! In this contest, the folks at FQS were trying to get over 3,000 Likes for their page. Of course, I clicked the "like" button. I do ...
  • Llanelli Pink and Gold Quilt from Welsh Quilts

Here is a Welsh quilt which has a jaunty feel to it - and it is one of my particular favourites because of its lively air. Originally sold at an auction house at Four Hands, Llanelli, it is local to that area. The dealer had seen other, similar quilts, in a similar colour combination, in that area.

The quilt measures 66 x 74 inches and has been well used, but is still in good condition. One side is a mid gold colour cotton sateen, the other a rich pink colour. The quilting thread is gold. The quilt edge is neatly hand ...
  • Shrimp Cocktail Sauce from Alderwood Quilts

Does everybody know this tip?  Mix a little horseradish with ketchup or tomato sauce to make shrimp cocktail sauce.  My DH can't tell the difference between this and a purchased jar of shrimp cocktail sauce.

Start with ketchup and add the horseradish just a little bit at a time until it tastes the way you like it.
  • Jargon of the Week - Honey Bun from A Little Bit of Craftiness and A Little Bit of Life

    Jargon of the Week

A honey bun sounds pretty tasty!  What's dictionary.com say a honey bun is?

    honey bun?
    –noun
    1. Also called sticky bun. a sweet spiral-shaped bun, usually with cinnamon, raisins, and nuts, coated with honey or butter and brown sugar.
    2. Also, hon·ey·bun . Informal . honey ( def. 6, 7 ) .
    Origin:
    1895–1900, Americanism
They are close to the quiltie term on the sweet spiral-shaped bun, but we hope they don't come with cinnamon, raisins, nuts, honey, butter, or brown sugar.  Think of what that would do to scissors and sewing machines.  Yuck!

Honey buns are another option for buying ...
