Haying at Home....July 2020 from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

The light was so beautiful last evening

I just had to capture a few haying images

and record a brief video.....enjoy !

Pulling down the driveway here at home...

It is unusual to make hay at our home place,
but we had so much grass this year
we had to mow it down...

Off in the distance, to the left of the barn,
you can see the cowboy baling hay
across the river...

The Cowboy is coming down the driveway
with the baler,
he will bale up our place tomorrow...

It was such a beautiful evening
here at home.

Spring pasture...

it is time to move them up river to
Summer pasture...

We are moving 100 head of

cow and calf pairs...

They make this drive year after year after year...

they KNOW the way.

My father-in-law at 83 years still makes

the drive with us.

His job today is keeping our cattle out of

the neighbor's hay field.

I am riding a motorcycle, chasing cattle

and trying to run the camera...

Hay....Raking and Baling from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

Life in the hay fields continues....

The hay bales are piling up...

Before the hay can be baled...

it must be raked

The mowed hay is dried,

then raked into windrows...

You can better see the windrows here...

long, narrow rows of dried hay

The tractor tires straddle the windrow...

the baler follows behind and picks up the hay

Today I am driving an open air Ford tractor:

The implement on the back is a hay rake...

looks more like a carnival ride to me.

Here is a close up of the rake teeth...

they rake the hay into a ...

There's always lots of company

while hay making...

This little steer calf looked like

a buffalo calf when he was born last March:

I call him....Buffalo Bill

His mother is Golden Girl...
he looks just like her !

All of the cattle are looking over to the right:

The Cowboy has just stopped

along their fence line

and dumped a bale out...

We are finally clear of the wet weather and

getting a bit of a rhythm to our hay making...

I am mowing the third hay field today...

straight ahead is our place across the river.

The Big Elk River runs between our place

and this hay field...

The fir trees in our yard keep it shaded

and cool in the summer...

The Cowboy is up river about 3 miles

baling hay:

Here is a view of the first hay field

full of round bales...

The Cowboy is baling the second field:

It is always FUN to watch a bale

Elk Cows and Yearlings... from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

I was coming out of the Thread Shed

to photograph a quilt I had just finished up...

just in time to see the elk across the river

They were grazing in the hay field,

then decided to jump the fence and go down

to the river...

These are mainly cows with last year's

yearling calves with them...

Their new calves will be born in June...

The calves are reluctant about jumping the fence,

yet do it with ease...

I was able to get this on video.....see below
