Nesting Nuthatch from Telling Stories Through the Needle's Eye

We are thrilled to have had such a great response to our Blue Jar Medley offering, Nesting Nuthatch! If you have followed us for any length of time, you will know that birds of all kinds are near and dear to our hearts. I (Kara) particularly love the nuthatch, as it was one of my Grandmother's favorite birds.

There are a few new techniques in this block—none of which are difficult, but we thought we would show some more detailed pictures for some of those techniques. Let's show you the nest according to your pattern directions.

Wool Applique and First Overnighter from Humble Quilts

This is the wool applique that is hand sewn to raw silk. I opted to add no batting. I backed it with a gorgeous fabric that was gifted to me, then hand quilted around all the applique shapes.
I may hang it for a bit then decide if I want to add more quilting.

This backing was PERFECT!

Made it out for our first backpacking trip
We got to enjoy our fire until all the wood was burned up. Can you tell we are in the desert? As soon as the sun went down it was chilly.

We could hear ...

Wool Applique from Humble Quilts

As you know I've been finding unfinished projects and finishing them. This is one of them- not quite complete. I love that wool applique is so portable! I have several "one blocks" made! This is designed by Maggie Bonanomi. In her books so many of the wool applique are unfinished. I know I want to finish this simply, but not sure how. Any ideas?

Here's a little wool applique I finished this weekend. It was designed by Julie Porter and was in Primitive Quilts magazine, but I could not find my issue to finish. So I used a ...

Wool Applique from Humble Quilts

I completed this wool applique last night! Such a pretty little project.
Not perfect! Handmade and humble by me! lol

I opted to back it in a brushed homespun.
This is how I found the block in a drawer in my sewing room. I ended up finding a larger tablerunner pattern in a book by Rebekah Smith.

I brought it with me to Idaho and buttonhole stitched it down .

Then promptly came home and burned it! Aargh! I removed the stitches and sewed it back onto a new piece of black.

Then finished it with this lovely gold wool.

I ...

Autumn Jubilee Wool Stitch Along Finish from From My Carolina Home

Did you get your wool applique done from part 1? When we left off, the motifs were stitched to the base. If you missed part 1 that has the pattern, click on Autumn Jubilee on the sidebar and go back a few posts.

Today we embellish and finish the needle keeper. Get out your stash of seed beads and other little lovelies, and add some bling to the project as you wish. For me, I put veins on the leaves with wool thread.

I did all the leaves, and left the acorns as they were.

Then I added just a ...

Autumn Jubilee Wool Stitch Along from From My Carolina Home

One thing in my hand sewing basket that I use a lot is my felt needle keeper. It was a party favor years ago at a quilt club Christmas party. It is getting a bit shabby, but is so useful, that I thought maybe it would be nice to make one in wool. So our Autumn Jubilee Wool stitch along will be a needle keeper, but you can use the motifs to do a little penny rug instead if you prefer. Start by cutting out the shapes from the pattern pdf below and matching them to the wool felt colors ...

Once Upon an Ornament from Telling Stories Through the Needle's Eye

Everyone loves a fairy tale. Most of us can probably name a favorite or two, which elicit memories from our childhood. These timeless tales have entertained and taught lessons to generations, and many have similar versions in cultures around the world. I (Teri) loved them as a child, read them to my children, taught them in my 4th and 5th grade classrooms, and now share them with my grandchildren. Our mutual love of these stories is one of the things that brought Kara and me together as designers, when we created our Fairy Tale Album. This set of Fairy Tale ...
