Sunday Chat – Garden and Quilt Show from From My Carolina Home

Looking out the front sliding glass door on a rainy day this past week, a wet and bedraggled looking Gracie was sitting at the doormat, looking hopeful. It is apparent she still has pups in her nest. Of course she got a nice, fat, peanut butter sandwich.

It was still drizzling, but she took her treat to the retaining wall where she could eat under the canopy of the tree.

Back on the veranda, the dahlias are sprouting. I have these in a pot so I don’t have to dig them up for winter, I just take the pot ...

On the Veranda from From My Carolina Home

Warmer days mean having meals on the veranda. Last week we had friends over for a meal, so I had to set a nice table for them. After washing the pollen off the table, I set it with white placemats, spring green chargers, white dinner plates and pink floral salad plates.

Spring green napkins are held with plastic crystal design rings, with everyday flatware. I didn’t put the drink glasses on the table, as I had several sizes for our guests to choose depending on what they wanted to drink. I put one set of salt and pepper shakers ...

April Gardening Time from From My Carolina Home

We are having friends over for dinner tomorrow, and the weather will be perfect for an al fresco meal of grilled goodness. Everything is greening up, the azaleas are close to being in full bloom, and I needed to get the veranda ready to enjoy. This time of year it is covered in pollen, so the first thing was to give it a good wash, scrubbing down the boards and rails. Here is the culprit, the oak tree pollen is rampant. This picture came out so well, I might enter it in the fair this year.

I have tried for ...

May In the Garden from From My Carolina Home

This has been the weirdest year, with temperatures too warm through the entire winter, then just about the time I should be planting, we get overnight freezes. And while my vegetable crops did well from seeds in the basement, they didn’t survive when transplanted. I did harden them off for several nights, then put them in the planter where I usually grow tomatoes. Then we went on our MINI adventure, and the rain we were supposed to have that week didn’t come. So, off to the garden center to get the annuals for all the pots, and a ...

Little Projects from From My Carolina Home

I’ve had a few little projects to do lately, working around lots of meetings and the quilt show. While I was manning the booth at the show, a friend of mine came by. She loved the Hungry Animal alphabet lullaby quilt, saying it was just so cute. After the show, she found out that another friend would be welcoming a grandchild, and asked if one was still for sale. But, I had sold both the ones I had during the show. I did have another panel, so I made one for her. I had some coordinating print for the ...

Al Fresco Tablescape from From My Carolina Home

With the warming weather, we love eating on the veranda. Last weekend we decided to invite our neighbors up for a springtime meal to enjoy it with us. I set the table so the couples were a bit farther apart, just to make them more comfortable. It has been a while since I had some tablescaping fun, so I took the opportunity to use what I have in a new way.

This bowl was the inspiration for the color scheme and theme. It has red and gold as the main colors, with chickens on the sides. I made a delicious ...

June in the Garden from From My Carolina Home

It is hard to wrap my head around the fact that it is the middle of June, although it is certainly getting hot enough.  I am not a fan of summer heat, although I do like the cool mornings and evenings we usually have.  June is the month the fireflies usually come out, and we see them lighting up like twinkle lights in the meadow at dusk.  Abundant green in the forest and a profusion of flowers are here, and the critter watch is fun.  As usual, when I get going on the garden, this will be a long and ...
