Oh Scrap! : Orphan Block Progress from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I have been finding some big blocks of time to spend in my sewing room lately - but the projects I am working on are all so time consuming.  That means the progress has been slow.

This "medallion style" quilt from a bunch of orphan blocks is the project that is using most of my time.  I spent the weekend finishing up the green round of blocks. Right now it measures about 36" square.

Next, I plan on adding some gray blocks to create one more round of borders.  I will need to track down some scraps to create a few ...

Oh Scrap! : Bit by Bit from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

As I was digging through all the bags and tubs of partially finished projects to see if there were any items I wanted to adopt out in the Quilty Orphan Adoption event, I came across a bag of a partially started scrap vortex project I adopted from a friend.

I had stuffed it in a bag and have been adding to it as I came across sewed pieces in the correct color combinations.  I decided to raid my orphan block stash to see what else I could contribute...

The colors are mostly purples and turquoise.  I added all sorts of ...

Fall 2020 Quilty Orphan Adoption Event from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

Do you have a long list of UFOs that you feel like you will never get done?  Adopting out an unloved UFO may be a better option than finishing it yourself!

I have been working for years to continue to work down my list.  I think I am under 20 projects now.  But every once in a while, I start something that I know I don't want to finish.  And with a LONG list of quilts I want to make in the future, I find it is nice to pass the unwanted onto someone else.

So a number of ...

Oh Scrap! : Orphan Blocks...Again! from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

As I was straightening up my sewing table, I came across some sewn bits I needed to put in my orphan block storage.  My single suitcase of leftovers has turned into so much more!

On the left is my little suitcase that has always contained my extra blocks.  When that became full, I started throwing them in another box.  Now that one is overflowing!

So I decided to do a quick sort and pull out some bits to play with.  I am sewing on another project so I have been sewing on this at the same time.  I started with ...

Room in the Box from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I was packaging up the homespun quilt I finished for the Hands2Help challenge when I realized there was room in the box for another quilt.

So I decided to include this quilt I made back in 2017 from some Kaffe Fassett orphan blocks.  It has been tucked away in a bin since I finished it and I am happy that it will finally have a home.  You can go back and read the original blog post here.

I am sending these two quilts off to Emily for the Quilty Hugs organization.
The box is absolutely stuffed so I hope she ...

Hands2Help Finish from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

Okay, so technically this isn't a real finish, but I am sending off an older finish for the H2H quilt drive.  I have so many quilts around here, some really need to find a home!

Remember this quilt I made back in 2017 out of a bunch of orphan blocks? (You can see the initial post here.)  Since completion it has been stored away and hasn't seen much daylight.  So I have decided it needs to find someplace where it can bring some comfort.

It has been packaged up with this recent finish and is on its way ...

Spring 2020 Quilty Orphan Adoption Event from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

Have you been spending your isolation time in your sewing room?  If you are like me, you have probably spent some time cleaning and digging out old UFOs.  If you have come across some old projects or orphan blocks that you no longer want, consider adopting them out!

Quilting is more fun than Housework

Does this sound like projects you might have?  Well my friends, it is time to get those projects out of our sewing rooms and into the hands of someone that will finish them!  Over the years, I have adopted out over a dozen projects and I have never given them a second ...

Every Quilt Eventually Finds a Home from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

Over the holidays, I took some time off and focused on getting some tasks done around my house.  One of those tasks was to replace the canvas leads on my longarm.
Once I got them installed, I needed to test them out with one of my own quilts, so I loaded up the Kaffe Fassett orphan block quilt I was working on at the end of last year.

I was really thinking hard about not finishing this quilt.
The beauty in this one was in the making of it, not the finished top!

All of the bits and pieces in ...

Oh Scrap! : In A Slump from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I am finding myself in a bit of a creative slump right now.  2019 was a really busy year for me and I think I hit my limits around mid-December.  So for the past few weeks, I have just been focusing on tasks like housework and health so that I feel a bit more in control.

When I have felt like going into my sewing room, I have been working on my Kaffe Fassett orphan block project.  I decided to bring back the dark plum fabric I used in the center to the outside border.  I had a "tunnel" block ...

Oh Scrap! : Playing with Kaffe Bits from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

With the rush to prepare for the upcoming holidays, I haven't been able to spend too much time to sew this week. But I did work a bit on some of the orphan blocks that were left up on one of my design walls.

Here are the orphan blocks I pulled using Kaffe Fassett fabrics.
They were just placed up on the wall randomly.

I decided to start with these snowball blocks.  I framed them in a dark plum quilters linen.

I then circled them with some of the HSTs that were left over from a couple previous projects ...

Oh Scrap! : Lots of Distractions from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I have been finding myself a little lost lately without any specific scrap projects to work on.  So every time I get a few minutes in my sewing room (that I am not sewing holiday gifts), I find myself hopping from bin to bin and creating a mess.

I did start a project I have had in my head for a bit.  After I made my Improv Garden, I kept thinking it might be fun to use the same technique to create lights in a midnight sky - they could be thought of as stars or lighting bugs.  I finished one ...

Trash into Treasure from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

Even though I have had little time to sew, I have been trying really hard to finish up as many UFO projects as I can by the end of the year.  So any spare moment I have is focused on completions.

This week has been all about holiday gifts - but I did get one little quilt finished.

This one actually started out as a stack of orphan blocks and some coordinating scraps.

I used some darker gray, made more HSTs and then made these fun 9' blocks.
I really like how the two colors of solids look - I will have ...

Oh Scrap! : Buried Treasure from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

After finishing a few quilts, it was time I straighten up my sewing room this week.  I try to keep all the fabric together for a project until its completion - or I will inevitably use the needed fabric on something else.

I admit there is a LOT going on in my sewing room right.  There are piles and stacks of projects everywhere.  As I was moving things around, I found buried one of my last orphan block stacks I was planning on making into a quilt.  I had completely forgotten about it!

I didn't have any of the light ...

Finished...But not as Planned from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I have finished another little quilt from the orphan block stash. I think this makes project number four.  This one was originally planned to be quite different but I never did find some purple fabric I swore I had.  But I still really like the finished wall hanging.

I featured an improv orphan block I received in a bag of scraps.  I love the colors and fabrics in it.
I have used the purple and white striped fabric (second in from both ends) in a previous quilt and thought I had more in my stash.
I was originally going to ...
