Sometimes when looking at fabrics, I fall pretty hard. Designer Janet Clare did some wonderful stuff for Moda with a line called Wordsmith. I've made several quilts simply because I love working with these fabrics. Grandson Sam has one of these quilts, and I can't even remember who has others. When I got low on one of these fabrics, I would look at Etsy and buy more. This line is way out of print, and it's time to simply let them go. I think I may have enough for one more quilt, not counting the one that ... read more
I haven't been posting much lately, but the quiltmaking continues!
This is a flannel couch quilt. A dear friend gave me some flannels, and I added a few of my own to the mix. I backed it with a piece of fleece I had on hand that happened to be exactly the right size!

Next up is a Hallowe'en Trip Around the World. I know it is out-of-season, but next October, I'll be ready!
read moreThis pretty little Trip Around the World (gratitude to Eleanor Burns and her directions for this favorite pattern) was made from fabrics that play together nicely texturally. I love the jewel tones, too. I had to make the pattern smaller because I was working with leftovers and fat quarters. This is 57” x 72” and a great size for napping. Batted with wool, it was a pretty fast project to needle, about a month.
It’s a nice addition to my quilt ladder which doesn’t have much color.

On my third try I found the perfect brown for the claws on this Bear Paw block. The other 2 choices just weren't quite right.
The first two blocks are sewn.....
...and I started working on a layout of a third block.
First finish for October.
I'm having a hard time getting a straight on shot of this Floral Colorwash #7. This was the best one.
For my own record I'm trying to keep track of the backing fabrics that I have used. This quilt is about 30" square.
While the design wall was empty and the ... read more
Moving is stressful. Leaving a house after 35 years is stressful. The actual moving process is stressful. Lining up proper documentation is stressful. None of this is distress - it’s all eustress. Nevertheless it’s stress. So of course I have to sew.
The Kaffe collective Trip Around the World is debuting as a finished top. I started sewing the stratas almost a year ago and they were pressed and ready to continue for many months. I finally got tired of moving them around from place to place and started the designing process. It is 58.5" x 77.5" right now.
Here is a close up of all of the fabrics in it.
After I finished that I cut 6 more Crossed Canoe blocks and sewed them. Some of the fabrics are repeats that I used in previous blocks and 5 are ... read more
I'm still cutting up some leftovers from the setting triangles on the warm color Kaffe 16 patch quilt. I made 2 test blocks cut with the LeMoyne star die.
Round 2 of cactus blooming is starting now. This is a champagne color plant that I bought last year.
It has about a dozen buds. I ... read more
During the days this week I have been working on cutting colorwash kits and at night I sew. I have the left half of the TAW sewn now and after I took this photo I brought the next 5 rows upstairs to sew. I need to do some unpicking today.
I had fun reading all of the comments yesterday about my fun find and it reminded me I have a lot more larger pieces done too in another place in my studio. I think I need to get all of them out and photograph them too and then show the ...

I don't normally choose a light color for binding but I needed something that went well with the backing fabric (also a Kaffe Fassett fabric) because I thought it might be used with either side up. The light blue Aboriginal dots was the only thing I had that went well with it. There are blues in the ... read more

It's really hard to tell how they will work with just one of each folded into triangles. I just couldn't get motivated to cut them so I worked on something else.
I sliced one of the stratas for the Kaffe throw size Trip Around the World quilt.

I cleaned off this cutting table yesterday and immediately chose 2 projects to work on. I have stratas sewn for a throw size Kaffe Trip Around the World. I need to sew the last seam to make them into a tube and then slice off segments to start designing on the wall. The other project is to go through that box of batik scraps and choose some to cut for more pineapple log cabin blocks. I only need blocks with light centers and corners to go with the 10 blocks I have in the orphan block box. I can see ... read more

I made this quilt once before with a travel theme. This time I used florals and a range of solid colors. It was another quilt that requires careful planning and organization, but it was fun to make!
I used a cheater fabric for the back to continue the floral idea, then I added a striped binding to finish. It is brighter than it looks in the photo--I took the photo on a cloudy day.
Happy Quilting!
Another is the strata for Strips 'n Curves. They both depend on a smooth blend/gradation for the resulting glow in the finished piece. Lessons learned in my class lead to stunning quilts in the future for my students.

read moreFor some time now I have contemplated making a Trip Around the World (scrappy, of course) out of solids. There have been some beautiful ones out there as inspiration and today (Friday) was the day.
I hauled out the solids bin and got the little pieces. Ta-dah! The first block.
You will notice that it is not strip pieced. There are some scraps that will only give a single square, and I want to be able to use those also. It might take a bit longer on the front end, but the results should be worth it.
It is based ...
