A Goldilocks Moment from Quilt in Progress

I found the “just right” size of bean bag frog from my Jr. High years. McCalls had come out with a pattern in the early 70s for a bean bag frog. The mother of a friend made several of them for the friend to give away. Somehow I came up with the name Uncle Dudley for mine and it stuck. I played with Uncle Dudley for a long time but I don’t know what happened to it.

Pinterest showed me the frog and I searched for just the right pattern. It couldn’t be a different version, it had ...

Activity block for my grandson from Quilt in Progress

He is a real hoot, and busy all the time. He loves the toys with a push button that unleashes a lot of noise, but he also concentrates on a new skill and works until he masters it. He did that with the bubble pop silicone toy, stacking toy blocks, and I’m sure he will do the same with this.

I found it on Pinterest. It’s simple, and the goal is to feed the beads through the buttonholes until you reach the end. Both sides have interesting fabric. I chose leftovers and made each side a 9-patch, though ...

Dinosaur from Granny Maud's Girl

I was invited to a baby shower last weekend, so I crocheted a baby gift to take. I might know next to nothing about the care and maintenance of babies, but I think I am pretty good at making baby things.

Amigurumi dinosaur made using Yanina Schenkel's pattern

He is such a handsome dinosaur.

I had a bit of a false start with some 4-ply (fingering) wool, and I soon realised that the finished toy would be very, very small. I ripped out that attempt and restarted with 8-ply (DK) cotton. The pattern actually calls for 5-ply (sport), but 8-ply yarn worked perfectly.

An elephant and a sheep from Granny Maud's Girl

In recent months, I needed gifts for new babies, so I crocheted a couple of toys.

The first was for my Kiwi neighbours. Crocheting a kiwi crossed my mind, but I chose to make a sheep instead because I already had a pattern for a sheep. It is the ‘Simon the Sheep’ pattern by Kerry Lord, from her book Edward’s Menagerie, but his new family have called him Harry, not Simon. I made him with one skein of Dos Tierras from Malabrigo.

I added to the gift by buying a large square of double gauze fabric and hemming it ...

Green Butterflies and Checkerboard Blocks from Romany Quilting

I’ve been stitching up dark green this week, and it’s that time again to share what we have made for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge.  This time I’ve made three more butterflies, and here they are, waiting to join their other colourful cousins in the butterfly collection.  This is a pretty little block, especially with their feelers added, and will make a nice girl’s donation quilt, I think.

A donkey and a hippo from Granny Maud's Girl

Earlier this year, LoveCrafts asked me whether I would like to try some of their products. Of course I would!

My first thought was to make something for the new grandson, so after much delay and consultation with his mum, I chose an amigurumi donkey pattern by Kristi Tullus and yarns from the Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran range. I felt that realistic colours would help make him recognisable as a donkey, so I ordered black, white and slate grey.

The yarn arrived in the mail, beautifully presented ...

Looking for Teddies from Romany Quilting

Teddy bears are playing their part by bringing a little joy into people’s lives as we live in the Covid 19 Lockdown.   The teddies have been placed into windows around the country, and all around the world too, a fun idea to keep children entertained as they go for a walk with their parents around their local streets.   There are no children in our village, but many of our neighbours go for a daily walk.  Big Ted is doing his best to cheer our neighbours up a little as they walk by.
