Stashbusters December from From My Carolina Home

Time again for our Stashbuster reporting. It is the last one of the year, but the final year end report will be in January, so your sewing in December counts for this year. Then we will start over again. As the challenge is to complete things for gifts, or to use, this is a great time to finish those UFOs and wrap up the projects in progress.

I finished the Quilt of Valor, so that is a bunch of yardage out. Fabric out = 8-1/2 yards for fabric top (with a bit of waste in the flying geese), backing and ...

Stashbusters November from From My Carolina Home

Believe it or not, it is time again for Stashbusters! How’d you do last month? There is only one rule, report as ‘out’ only what is completely finished, quilted and bound. For small items like purses or totes, they have to be finished and ready for use or gifting. The challenge is to finish projects, have them in use, ready to give as a gift, or out the door, not to create new UFOs for the closet. Fabric out can also be given away, or donated somewhere.

Remember, it is fine to buy fabric now and then. As Murphy ...

Stashbusters October from From My Carolina Home

Gather up your fabric in and out totals, as it is time to report your progress. For new readers, this is easy to do, just report what you have brought in and sent out over the past month, keeping a year to date total. No, you do not have to take inventory of your stash. Stashbusters July from From My Carolina Home

It’s Stashbusters Check In Day! I hope you have had some quality sewing time over the past weekend and will be able to sew during the one coming up with holidays in both the USA and Canada. I have a few fun designs in process that are Christmas themed, and I think I’ll do a short Christmas in July event later in the month. So pull out your Christmas fabrics for a stashbusting scrappy project in a couple of weeks.

This was the free exchange table at the last guild meeting. Now, I ask you, who could resist ...

Stashbusters from From My Carolina Home

Here we are, the beginning of September, just a few check-ins left to get that Stashbusters number higher in the ‘out’ category. For me, this month was a bounty of finds that were just irresistible.

First, I needed some tone on tone fabrics for background, and the sale at Foust Textiles, a North Carolina textile wholesale place, came at just the right time. I was also asked to get some wide backs for our Quilts of Valor chapter, so I had two reasons to go. I invited a few friends to ride along, or split the spoils with me. I ...

Stashbusters July Check In from From My Carolina Home

Once again, it is time to check in and report how you are doing on reducing your stash. Did you finish a project? Did you succumb to the freebie table at guild? Was a bit of retail therapy required? For new readers, every month we check in on the first Friday of the month. The goal is to have more ‘out’ than ‘in’ at the end of the year. No, you don’t have to inventory your stash, just keep track of what comes in and what goes out each month. I keep a clipboard in my sewing room with ...

Stashbusters April Check In from From My Carolina Home

Time for our monthly check in for Stashbusters! Today, report your progress from the month of March. You can include this past week if you like, reporting from the first Friday to first Friday, or keep it within the month, your choice. I thought I was going to go in the wrong direction with retreat, but some giveaways in the early part of the month saved my totals.

First, I want to go over again how I deal with quilts made from scraps. Since we need a way to figure out an approximate yardage, this is what I do. I ...

Stashbusters March Check In from From My Carolina Home

It’s check in day for Stashbusters! How did you do this month? Was there progress on your projects? Did the sale table call to you? I was pretty good, purchasing a new ruler at my local quilt shop, and resisting the pretty new fabrics. At least for now, LOL!!

Piddling from From My Carolina Home

My sewing recently has been sporadic, with a couple of projects in the works. This one I began before last Autumn Jubilee, and put aside as I just couldn’t come up with a good idea. The bird panels are not that big, so they will need some kind of alternate block to fill out the project. I have lots of the birdhouse fabric, and thought it went well with the bird images.

I began by cutting the panels apart, and trimming the white space.

I have six panels ready to go. But now what? They are pretty small.

I ...

Stashbusters May Check In from From My Carolina Home

How’d you do last month? I did a bit better with quilt finishes, but I had to take two big pieces of wide backing fabric offered from a friend for free. With the Quilts of Valor that I do, I need wide backs as much as possible. These pieces will go with anything as they are both lovely beige tone on tone prints. I am counting the fabric in at 5 yards for each one, mercy, that is 10 yards in.

Then, I have to count another 1-1/2 yards in for the fat quarters in the prize basket ...

Stashbusters April from From My Carolina Home

Time to check in! I almost delayed this a week as today is April Fools, but it is the first Friday, so here we go. This month, my totals went in the right direction again, but not a lot out. But, remember, it is the total at the end of the year that counts. After all, we still need to keep our local quilt shops in business. I realized that for last month, I should have reported the totals as February. So, today, I’ll call these March numbers, even though we are posting in April. The actual fabric in ...

Remembering Marianne from With Strings Attached

A light went out in the quilting world when Marianne Urban passed away on June 23.

With her online handle "Marianne in Mt. Vernon," she was a long-time participant in the Stashbusters and HeartStrings online groups.  She posted frequently and at great length.  She was supportive and insightful.

Chronic physical and health challenges limited her mobility but she overcame them in order to make dozens of quilts from her "stash the size of Montana," as she characterized it.

A year ago today I was able to spend the better part of a day with Marianne at her house (along with ...
