Sunday Chat from From My Carolina Home

Our goldfinches have been here about twice a day lately for easy meals. The whole flock stops by at once and it is fun to watch them vie for position and argue with each other. Here, nine of them are on the feeder at once.

Then, there were four more on the ground in this photo, plus a few more to the right of the photo range.

A male Eastern Towhee came by to pick at what the other birds let fall from the feeder. They prefer to eat off the ground.

In the garden, the larger of the squashes ...

Sunday Chat – Garden and Cooking from From My Carolina Home

Ah, finally, a day to relax after the craziness (albeit self imposed) of fair week. Ten days of cooking competitions, fair volunteer shifts, and enjoying the shows has left me grateful for a Sunday chat day to put my feet up and watch football games. In the garden, I am thrilled to see the toad lily is beginning its fall show. Soon, the long fronds will have a cascade of these interesting flowers in bloom. Right now, only the ones on the very end are coming out.

The cooler nights agree with my yellow calibrachoa, it is blooming like crazy ...

In the Sewing Room and the Garden from From My Carolina Home

I had all good intentions of getting some sewing done this past weekend, but you know what happens sometimes to best laid plans. Friday was spent entirely on Shop Hop, visiting four stores over 90 miles apart, plus lunch with a group from our guild. The promised rainy day on Saturday canceled a car club drive, and I thought maybe I’d be able to spend some time on a new project. But as that day progressed, I got busy cleaning the house, and it just got away from me. I did a deeper clean than my usual, and it ...

July in the Garden from From My Carolina Home

It is exciting to see what is happening in the vegetable garden now. Many plants are bearing veggies and tomatoes. I still don’t know what this one will be. I thought the shape was closer to a spaghetti squash, but it seems to be growing more orange, so it is likely a pie pumpkin. We’ll see as it gets bigger and more ripe.

I have three acorn squashes, all in different stages. Two are pretty small like this one.

Another one is getting close to harvesting size.

I think this one will be a butternut based on its ...

Late June in the Garden from From My Carolina Home

Milder and cooler temperatures moved in this week, making sitting on the veranda a real joy. Recent rains have brought the hydrangea into bloom too. The lime I put on the ground under the plant is helping the blooms toward the purple color I like best.

Lots of beautiful blooms are all over this shrub.

The vegetable garden is coming along, with tall tomatoes and lots of squash. I set the pot of petunias in front for a bit of floral color. The squash plants are blooming so well, lots of yellow flowers to enjoy.

This might be a spaghetti ...

June in the Garden from From My Carolina Home

The floral show continues in June with daylilies and more coming along. I am delighted with these snapdragons, so many pretty colors and such a profusion of blooms.

Medium pink above, and the lighter pink below are side by side. The yellow ones behind are coming into bloom too.

Of course, I love the purity of the white ones.

On the veranda, I need to cut this geranium back and root the cuttings, but it is blooming so well I have been reluctant to do this yet.

In another pot, the purple pansies are still showing their happy faces.

The ...
