Garment Sewing from Becca's Crazy Projects

A friend pointed me to this simple pattern from Helen's Closet. There was a sale so I picked it up along with a couple other patterns.
I wanted to save some time so I popped over to PDF Plotting and placed an order for pattern printing. If you like digital patterns but not the piecing together of pages you print on your home printer, check them out. They have very reasonable prices and usually print and ship the next business day. I had my patterns in a couple days. Make sure you add several patterns to the order to ...

Make May Modern from Becca's Crazy Projects

Last Saturday the Baltimore Modern Quilt Guild held their Make May Modern one day retreat. I didn't attend in person but they encouraged everyone to make a tote using the Ruby Star Society Reusable Shopping Tote pattern (free). Since I didn't attend I decided to at least sew along with part of my day and make the tote. This fabric has been in my collection for more than five years. I'm pretty sure it came to me as a mystery box of quilting cottons from Craftsy. Large prints almost always become totes or bags because I don ...

Promness from Becca's Crazy Projects

Eighteen embroidered, organza butterflies.
Two rose motifs.
One layer of navy chiffon behind one layer of butterfly tulle.
I placed the flower motifs but repositioned over the shoulder seams.
The cape from the back.
The vest from the front.

None of this is as important as how it made the prom-goer feel. The report from Friday night was that they positively glowed. Which is the goal of prom. A night to make you feel special and ethereal. I'm glad I was part of this journey. It was a pleasure to take a hand drawn design and create a final ...

What Makes Prom from Becca's Crazy Projects

I had to break out another sewing machine to make the button holes. If you can, go for the machine that does a one-step buttonhole (my Pfaff makes a nice one). It is so much easier to do than a four-step.
I ordered some organza butterflies from Amazon to add to the butterfly tulle.
I added them to the bottom third of the tulle fabric. I like the added density. I don't think one can have too many butterflies. I'm not adding them, either.

What Makes Prom from Becca's Crazy Projects

Part Two

I always forget how much there is to garment sewing. The interfacing.
The darts.
The top-stitching.
The pockets (these aren't real pockets). I love this fabric. It is subtle and amazing at the same time.
The standing back and admiring an almost finished vest. At this point it still needs button holes, buttons, some lining finishing stitches. You know, little details.

What Makes Prom from Becca's Crazy Projects

What does one do when asked to help out with the prom project? One goes with it. I grabbed some fabrics from my collection and a pattern and got busy with a simple wearable muslin. This is the only simple part of this project.
Embroider some butterflies on organza (which I had in a box for some reason). This design is Whimsical Butterfly from Urban Threads
And do some shopping for suitable fabrics. This wonderful rose embossed fabric for the vest.
Add some chiffon and butterflies on fine tulle and I was ready to go. Bringing a fashion vision to ...
