Oh Scrap! : Strings from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

Making all of these donation quilts, I end up with a lot of scraps.  I try to use them up as often as I can.  For the RWB block drive, I like to turn those scraps into string blocks.

I made these six 10.5" squares this week.

I have also received a few blocks in the mail.  I love how the blocks look so different and represent each person's scraps.  Once I get more completed, I will see what designs I can create with the blocks I have.  If need be, I will just make more blocks and ...

Oh Scrap! : Binding Day from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

All of the time I would have spent playing with scraps this week was used to prepare bindings for donation quilts.

About once a month, I spend a ton of time making scrappy bindings out of leftover bindings from previous quilts.  I try and match up colors or themes so they have a better chance of being used in the future.  I also go through small leftover bits to see if there are any that I can cut into 2.5" strips to make bindings from.  It feels like this chore takes forever!

This week I ended up with about ...

Donated Quilt Tops from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

So much scrappy goodness in today’s two quilts.

Another lovely string quilt from Karen. I really like these blocks started with a black triangle. It is fun to see all the happy scraps she put into this quilt.

Karen also supplied this black and white print for the backing.

This quilt measures about 55 x 65”.

This second quilt was made by Denise. She sure made those orphan blocks look amazing.

Nancy sent in this gorgeous backing fabric. I think I have even more so you will see it on another quilt.

This quilt measures 48 x 74”.

I ...

Oh Scrap! : Purple from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

Somehow, I was able to get out my purple scraps this week and make these 8 scrappy blocks.

I put them up on the wall with the rest of the blocks and discovered I need twenty more!  I guess I just keep chipping away at them until I finish the quilt.

Wishing everyone a Scrappy Sunday!

Oh Scrap! : More HSTs from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

Yay!  I wasn't sure if I was going to find the time to play with scraps this week.
But I decided dusting is overrated!

I made ten more of the scrappy 6.5" HSTs for my scrappy quilt.

Here is where we are now.  I really had to dig deep to find enough of these royal blue scraps.  Next up will be some purple for the corners.  But first I need to find some big chunks of more gray scraps.

I am really pleased with how this is progressing!

What did you do with your scraps this week?

Oh Scrap! : Progress from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

Thanks for all your suggestions last week on how I should move forward on my scrappy HST quilt.

I decided to make some orange blocks for the center and then purple blocks in the outer corners.

This week I was able to get the four orange blocks completed along with the six red blocks needed to finish the diamond. I have my blue scraps sorted so I hope to finish the ten blocks I need this week.

Before I know it, I am going to have a finished quilt top!
Thanks for helping me move this project forward.

Oh Scrap! : Next Steps from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I did spend some time on Saturday trying to decide my next steps on my scrappy HST quilt.

So far, I have made only blue and red blocks.

I put them up on the design wall numerous ways, but I think this is the layout I like best.  The blocks are 6" so the quilt will end up being about 60 x 72.

Now I need to decide if I keep it just two colors or do I add a third color - maybe yellow?  I would put the third color in the center and then out in the corners.

What ...

Oh Scrap! : More Scrappy HSTs from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

This has been a hilarious week - My good friend is out of town and I am helping to take care of her four dogs.  Add my cheeky boy in there and it quickly becomes a circus!

I will certainly be glad to see here when she gets home.

I did find some time this week to pull some blue scrappy strings to make these fun HSTs.  They measure 6.5" square.  There are 20 here.  I made more - I forgot that when you make these a "scrappy square" makes two blocks.  So I made twice the quantity I wanted.

That ...

Oh Scrap! - Leftover Triangles from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I think some of you are getting to know me so well!

This week, I received quite a few big boxes full of blocks, fabric, scraps, bindings and thread.  It is always fun to open them and see what is inside.

One of the things I received were these bigger triangles.  I dropped everything to play with these!
They are actually about 7".  It appears they may have been salvaged from a project because you could see stitching lines where someone had taken a seam ripper to them.  Of course I was instantly inspired by them!

I quickly got ut ...

Oh Scrap! : Just Add Pansies from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

Wow!  I actually made a scrappy quilt top this week!

Remember these strips of color that I have been making each month?  I finally found an inspiration fabric to make a quilt top out of them.

I was gifted about a yard of some pansy fabric.  I really didn't know what I was going to do with it.  It was small for a backing and it wasn't a great candidate for a binding.  But then I remembered my color strips.  I immediately pulled some pink, purple, green and turquoise and started sewing 2.5" x 8.5" strips ...

Oh Scrap! : Turquoise from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

The weather has been amazing the last few days, so Arthur and I have been spending lots of time outdoors - working and playing.

There are so many signs of spring.  It is time to get the garden prepped!

I did find time to make these nine scrappy strips in turquoise.  As I was digging through some fabric today, I discovered a yard of fabric that I think will finish some of these strips off nicely.  I pulled some pink, purple, green and turquoise strips so we shall see how it looks.
Maybe I will have a quilt top to share ...

Oh Scrap! : Orphan Blocks from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

In a previous post, you may remember I shared a quilt top that was rescued from an estate sale.  Not only did a number of quilt tops make their way to me but a TON of orphan blocks also were rescued.

This week I spent some time pressing them and sorting them by size.  (A few other orphan blocks made their way into the stack too).  I wanted to be sure I knew what exactly were in the bag that was donated.  I think many of these were actually UFOs but their fabrics and other blocks are long gone.

There ...

Oh Scrap! : String Blocks from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I am out of Veteran Quilt inventory so until we do a Veteran Block Drive again, I need to make about 3 RWB quilts every six weeks to meet the current demand.

I decided to use some of the RWB scraps and make some string blocks.  I still have about 10 string blocks left over from last year so I will only need to make about 20 blocks.  I quickly whipped out the six blocks above.

I also dug through some leftover churn dash blocks from last year and made another top which I will get quilted up soon and ...

Oh Scrap! : A Few Pinks from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

 Happy Sunday Everyone!

This was a crazy week for me.  I received two very large fabric donations, so my house was complete chaos for quite a few days as I sorted, folded and organized a lot of material.

I also received a few quilt tops and a whole bunch more orphan blocks.

Even with all that going on, I did sew a bit with some pink scraps.

I made ten more strip blocks.  They measure 4.5" x 8.5".

This is the prettiest scrappy thing I touched this week.  One of my clients brought me a Geese Migration top ...

Oh Scrap! : Pink Scraps from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

Oh Dear...I almost forgot to write my post before I went to bed.

I did finish five more Two Bit blocks in the color pink but I was so excited to have enough blocks for a quilt top, I forgot to take photos.  You will now have to wait to see them in the finished quilt. Sorry!

While I was cutting strips for my Two Bit blocks, I also cut some strips to make more of the blocks that have no name.  I am just sewing strips together to make a rectangle measuring 4.5" x 8.5".  Hopefully ...

Oh Scrap! : Something New from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I have been trying to come up with a simple scrap block that I could sew up on a continuous basis and use in lots of ways.  I have been thinking about this for months!

I also wanted something that didn't require a bunch of cutting.

This week I decided that I would just make some of these 4.5" x 8.5" strips of scraps.  I can use any size width of fabric, I can make them any color and I can just stack them up until an inspiration fabric shows itself.

The next step will be to ...

Oh Scrap! : More Two Bit Blocks from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

Most of this week was spent quilting and sewing the bindings on Compassion Quilts.

But I did get out my purple scrap bin and make four more Two Bit blocks.  I think I just need nine more blocks to have enough for the quilt size I want.

I was hoping to have all the blocks completed by the end of the year but I am still happy to have made as many as I have.  I HAVE been a bit busy lately...

As I was pulling scraps out of my purple bin, I also pulled appropriate scraps to start making ...

Oh Scrap! : Time Savers from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

 Happy Sunday Everyone!

I really didn't do much with scraps this week.  But I did work a lot on some tasks that I have found to be time savers so I thought I would share them.

A lot of Compassion quilts are finished every week either by myself or one of the elves.  Once a week, I go through all of the trimmings from the backings and decide which ones would make nice bindings.  The rejected ones are dumped in its appropriate scrap bin and the good ones I cut into strips and start sewing them together and rolling ...

Oh Scrap! : Heart Quilt from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I have some great scrappy news to share today.

Remember this scrappy red heart quilt I shared back in March?

Well, you can find the pattern for it in the newest American Patchwork & Quilting magazine.

It is called Pieces of my Heart.

USED WITH PERMISSION FROM AMERICAN PATCHWORK & QUILTING®. ©2023 MEREDITH OPERATIONS CORPORATION. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED

They did an adorable layout for the quilt and at the end of the pattern, provided information on donating quilts.

I also made this quilt with a pink heart and I don't think I ever shared it here on the blog.  These are ...

Oh Scrap! : RSC Finish from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

This week I decided to take a break from quilting Happy Block quilts and loaded my RSC quilt onto my longarm.  It has been patiently waiting in my studio for a couple of months now.

There are actually three different blocks in this quilt - all are 12".  First there are a rainbow of heart blocks I made.  As I was making heart blocks, I also mad a monochromatic 36 patch block.  The last blocks in this quilt are the chain blocks.  I was sent those as an orphan block from Elana.  I think they worked perfectly in this quilt.  They ...
