Tool Tips from Becca's Crazy Projects

Today I'd like to talk about some of my favorite and must-have tools. First, a quality pair of snips. These are my favorite. I have two: one with my long arm, and one with my English Paper Piecing bag/kit. I keep mine on a retractable badge holder. That way I can slide the clip onto my shirt collar so my scissors are always handy. I can also slide the clip onto my keyboard tray on the frame.
Next, the humble yard stick. You can pick these up at the home improvement warehouse of your choice, usually for just ...

Scissor Alert! from Ravelly1

I decided to do a bit of cleaning up in my sewing room starting with some drawers that I thought had only thread. Well that turned into a big surprise. Scissors!!!!! OMG!  Why do I have 4 crane type scissors....this is a bit ridiculous.

I know there are more somewhere but for the moment I'll have to deal with these. Do you have a scissor collection?  Talk to me friends.....LOL!

My new bread machine.  You really don't want to know how the first two loaves turned out. Let's just say a brick would have been ...

Aaron's Rag Quilt from Sew........This Is My Blog

I don't mean to brag (actually, I do!), but I'm feeling pretty good that I actually started on a quilt "just" two years after my son asked me to make it.  This was another of my Covid isolation projects.  Aaron and I had shopped for flannels when I went to Seattle to spend some time with him over Mother's Day weekend in 2018.  In mid-2020 I started working on it.  Pretty impressive, right?  It didn't even have time to become a UFO!

He was pretty sure about what he wanted.  We ended up with some nice ...

Tool Tip Wednesday from Becca's Crazy Projects

On Saturday I broke my retractable holder for my snips. I slip the click onto the collar of my shirt so my scissors are always handy when I'm working with the long arm. This also ensures I don't leave them on the surface of the quilt.
Thankfully, I had a back up clip in my desk. The scissors are Fiskars micro-tip. They are perfect for keeping next to your sewing machine or in your sewing bag. I'm pretty sure I have three pair: one in my hand sewing kit, one for my long arm, and a third ...

stitching stash from Charm About You

I recently got a few stitchy bits and bobs to help set me up for stitching projects this year. It's custom for me to share, mostly to document the details of things for my own record but also to give recommendations. I'd also love for you to share what items you have tried / use / love in the comments because there's nothing better than word of mouth!

First up is this lot from Lakeside Needlecraft. An 11" Q Snap frame, I already have an 8" that I love and I plan on having a couple of cross stitch ...

Scissors and Piecework Buttonhole Sampler from Collector with a Needle

Velma on my NEW project
I have a couple new projects to tell you about!
I have been heads down stitching - and enjoying every minute.

First, it seems to take longer as Velma wants to be in the center of it ALL!  Yes, that's an all white project...needless to say it is a bit fortified with cat hair.

That's OK.

See more details below.

Second, I have a web article for Piecework magazine - just out today.
You can read it HERE.

What does my project and article have in common?

BUTTONHOLES ...

How to bind a quilt by machine that looks near to invisible from Quilt Social

The fabric’s been chosen, the quilt top’s sewn and the quilting is done. Now it’s time to add a binding to finish the Spring Blossoms for Mom lap quilt. I really don’t want to mess it up now and it’s all about the finishing touches that sometimes make or break a project. No FOB (fear of binding) allowed.

There’s a way, yes there is… to add a binding to a quilt by machine that does not look wonky, messy or unprofessional. Today, I’ll explain this process to you. You’ll need Gütermann invisible ...

UNIQUE pattern tracing film helps to audition quilting options from Quilt Social

Sewing of the quilt top Spring Blossoms for Mom is complete. Quilting decisions can now take place. It’s important after all the work sewing the quilt, the quilting be considered carefully.

Quilting design factors

  • How much do I want the quilting to show on the front and the back.
  • What color of thread should be used.
  • Which fabrics need enhancing or showing off.
  • Scale of the quilt blocks and in this case appliques as well.
  • The use of the quilt. i.e. Quilt show worthy, art quilt to be hung, utilitarian?
  • How much washing may or may not take ...

Gütermann cotton and invisible nylon threads for piecing and applique from Quilt Social

The last few days, I’ve discussed the materials needed and prepared the fabric for a really fresh Spring Blossoms for Mom lap quilt using HeatnBond Lite iron-on adhesive to make the tulip appliques. This quilt will be an awesome Mother’s Day gift this spring. I’m ahead of the curve and will have it made in advance. Today I get to sew with Gütermann cotton and nylon (invisible) thread. It’s sew time don’t you think?

Sew the background

  • Gather up the background strips and leave them in order from 1-5 as discussed yesterday.
  • Sew 7 strip ...

So Many Socks from Becca's Crazy Projects

After getting the 72 slot cylinder for my circular sock knitting machine I have been working on holiday gifts. The 64 slot is perfect for socks for my small, narrow feet, but I know so many people with human-sized feet. This is the pair of monster socks I knit up. It's nice to use up those little odds and ends leftover from making matching socks.
There was some coffee along the way, too.
I even finished up this tiny sock knit on the machine. This sock is worked bck and forth on about 24 stitches and is seamed up ...
