The Houston Modern Quilt Guild from Fat Quarter Shop's Jolly Jabber

Inspired by QuiltCon Together, we wanted to find out more about the folks behind the event and the movement to make modern quilts. The Modern Quilt Guild is comprised of 200 guilds around the world with more than 15,000 members. In these guilds, education and community are a focus year-round, bringing quilters together to explore, create and connect.

We reached out to Tricia Young, President of the Houston Modern Quilt Guild to get an up-close look at what guild life is all about.

Houston MQG members share the pillow covers received from a swap with another guild (all photos ...

QuiltCon Together 2021 from Fat Quarter Shop's Jolly Jabber

Welcome, Quilters! Last week The Modern Quilt Guild hosted another fantastic QuiltCon, this one was all virtual (which meant we could take class in our pajamas snuggled under our favorite quilt. Score!) QuiltCon Together 2021 featured all of the QuiltCon goodness we’ve come to expect, from world-class instructors to exclusive exhibits, and a quilt show that is unlike any other!

We all know the quilt show is one of the most exciting parts of the conference! It’s inspiring to see the boundless innovation and beauty from so many quilt artists all in one place. Congratulations to all the ...

QuiltCon 2021 - Together, Virtual - and What I'm Learning from Quilting Studio Adventures

QuiltCon Together, 2021, wasn't awful and it wasn't fabulous.  While the social component was missing, the content was awfully good.  And it's an absolute luxury to listen to a lecture/workshop at your own time and own pace while doing something purposeful with your hands!

It was a lot of screen time, and most of it was so well done.  This picture oh Heidi Parkes hows how most of the presentations were done - little dot on the screen with the presenter and big screen for demos and handouts.

For QuiltCon 2020, which I had to miss (broken ...

Feeling Energized ~ from Marty's Fiber Musings

Wasn't QuiltCon Together a delightful event!

Certainly was from my viewpoint.

 What energy!

And how easy and comfortable here at home to listen and watch lectures, participate in workshops and shop those marvelous vendors.

Yes, I'm feeling energized and lovin' it.

As many of you know who follow me and my activities, I've been downsizing in the hopes of becoming (tongue in cheek) a minimalist.  And try as I may, some items that I love but am finished with just aren't selling as I thought they would.  Case in point is this wonderful Bright Quilts from ...

Quiltcon Together 2021 from Ellyn's Place

I had so much fun going through the Quiltcon Together virtual quilt show this weekend. As always, there was a huge array of stunning quilts in all of the categories. I found the community service quilts to be especially beautiful this year, and I was so proud of my guild, the McKinney Modern Quilt Guild for our contribution. Together in Turbulence was spearheaded by my friend Chris and many many quilters had a hand in the assembly. I was thrilled to contribute some blocks to the quilt.

I had no idea that receiving a first place ribbon for my Urban ...

Quiltcon Together awards ceremony from Ellyn's Place

Well Quiltcon sure does look different this year. In my continued effort to create community during the virtual event. I organized a zoom party for several friends last night during the awards. Of course, Texas being the mess that it is, our power was in and out all day yesterday. A friend who had steady power and internet invited us to bring our technology to her house and watch from there, so we did (we being hubby and I).

Don't you love my fancy setup? One laptop for zoom party. A second laptop for the awards ceremony. Phone for ...

Quick on my feet from Crazy Quilter on a Bike!

I'm thrilled to report that it was so much easier to walk around yesterday than the previous day. The plow had either come back, or sidewalks had been shoveled, and snow had melted. However, I think that we have more snow coming today. Oh boy! The piles of snow on the sides of my driveway are high, but nothing like I've seen in the past. Let's hope this is the LAST big dump of the year. It sounds like this snow has hit hard in many places that don't normally get snow. Hopefully, everyone will get ...

MQG Mini Swap from Ellyn's Place

Tonight, Quiltcon Together begins with the awards ceremony and I'll be zooming with quilty friends during the webcast. It's the best we can do during these strange times.

One of my favorite parts of Quiltcon each year is the mini quilt swap. Participants are assigned a partner and make and swap minis during quilt con. This is my fifth year participating and I have beautiful minis from all of my partners hanging in my house and have formed strong friendships with my former partners. Of course that looked different this year too!

My partner, Kathleen, and I have ...

Orange Creamsicle {a finish} from Factotum of Arts

As QuiltCon Together approaches (02/18/2021) I thought I would share this quilt that made it into the virtual show but had not made it onto my blog so far.

Say hello to Orange Creamsicle. Orange Creamsicle started with a single block that I had hoped would be a great compliment to the rest of the Sunday Best blocks.

IMG_6340

To be honest the block just didn’t really work with the rest of quilt. Yes, that became the start to Orange Creamsicle.

I introduced some limits to this quilt after the first block, as I really wanted to try ...

Making Prints—Student Showcase from Tales of a Stitcher

Making Prints is the very first workshop I ever taught. Back then, students were subjected to a volcanic eruption of information as I attempted to teach them EVERYTHING in a one day workshop. Heads exploded. Chaos ensued. I learned.

Linda Evans @quiltart

Now, I disperse this information over a series of classes. Here is the basic progression of those workshops.

Bruce Goldstone @bgquilt

Follow the links to sign up for the workshops that I am currently teaching.

Someone Pinch Me! My Mission Impossible Quilt was Juried Into QuiltCon Together 2021! from Cheeky Cognoscenti

You guys, I got the acceptance email two days ago, but I couldn't tell anyone about it at first because it seemed so unreal.  I had to go to bed, wake up in the morning, and check my email again to make sure it was still there.  My Mission Impossible quilt was accepted by the jurists into QuiltCon Together 2021!

Just a Glimpse of My Mission Impossible Quilt

This quilt is my original design, made for my oldest son's high school graduation in 2019 and sized to fit his XL Twin dorm bed when he went off to ...

QuiltCon Together 2021 General Registration is Now Open for Everyone! from Christa Quilts

I sure am glad that The Modern Quilt Guild knows how to make lemonade out of lemons. Earlier this year when it became apparent that there would be no big public quilting events through the end of the year, The MQG made the decision to go virtual for their show next February and I’m thrilled to be a part of it!

Community Outreach Quilt Challenge - 2021 from Calgary Modern Quilt Guild

Things are finally underway for this year's Community Outreach Quilt Challenge - formally known as Quiltcon Charity Quilt Challenge.
The Calgary MQG Challenge quilt, along with those from the other MQG Guilds and Individual Member Teams will be part of Quiltcon Together Online.

Last week we had a Zoom planning session with 17 members in attendance, and several others wishing they could attend. We had several suggestions put forward and loved many of them. After much discussion, we managed to narrow it down to one. Something we needed to consider this year was not being able to get together and ...

Save the Date: QuiltCon Together Registration Opens July 15 from Christa Quilts

I’m so excited to be a part of this! The Modern Quilt Guild took early steps to reimagine QuiltCon as a virtual event February 18–22, 2021, and it’s going to be great!

QuiltCon Together 2021

I think that more people will actually get to participate this way. I love that The MQG made lemonade out of lemons! I’ll miss seeing everyone in person, but this is the next best thing!

I didn’t originally apply to teach for QuiltCon 2021 because we were supposed to be out of the country. But of course the pandemic changed all that.

Words We Need from Gwen's Quilts

The QuiltCon Charity Challenge is one of the Modern Quilt Guild‘s largest-scale charity projects. Guilds and individual member groups create quilts according to challenge guidelines and after they are displayed at QuiltCon they are donated to the group’s charity of choice. For the 2020 show, groups were challenged to create quilts using text with a palette of grayscale. The vast majority of the quilts incorporated words of encouragement, hope and inspiration. Words we need right now. So I will share these quilts with you in the hopes they will lift you up, bring a smile, and remind you ...

100 days of bojagi from Ellyn's Place

It's been 100 days since Quiltcon 2020 in Austin. 100 days since we hugged new and old friends, stood in lines (close together!), ate tacos in crowded restaurants, chatted with vendors with no masks and thought nothing of it. 100 days since I sat in a classroom at the convention center with new and old friends and learned to do Korean Bojagi from Daisy Aschehoug.

Daisy is a warm, kind, bubbly human who currently lives in Norway (yes, she flew across the ocean to teach us, another thing people could do way back in February). She's an awesome ...

Neapolitan Evolution from Ellyn's Place

clearly a bit windy to shoot photos today
Today I have a quilt finish to share with you! This quilt has had many lives, and is finally to the point where I actually like it and can call it DONE! Let me start at the beginning.....

In November of 2018, some friends and I took a class from Sherri Lynn Wood, hosted by the Dallas Modern Quilt Guild. The class was color exploration, using improv strip sets. When the day was over, one of my large strip sets looked like this...
Now, these are NOT colors I am drawn to ...

Positively Spring from Ellyn's Place

My friend Jayne, from Twiggy and Opal, recently designed a beautiful table runner for Modern by the Yard called Positively  Spring. When she posted her second version, made exclusively in Peppered Cottons, I fell instantly in love and knew I needed to make one too!

I have to back this up a bit and tell you a story..... more than a year ago, at Quiltcon 2019 in Nashville, Jayne and I finally got to meet face to face. We had a great time chatting and getting to know each other better. On the final day, Sunday, I was sitting on ...
