This Flower Block will finish at 12" (width) by 10" (height). It is the exact same dimension as the Leaf Block. I had made an audition/trial block earlier. Based on that experience, I updated the method, which I am sharing in the tutorial.

These directions show how to make the Flower Block using 2.5" strips. You may use scraps (that can be used to cut the pieces shown under Fabric Requirements).

read moreIt has been a very busy year for me. According to Paul, all the busy-ness is self-created and self-inflicted. He is mostly correct and even if he was not, I am not going to argue with him. He is the only quilt model I have in these pandemic times. Cannot afford to irritate him.
Me: So busy that I have not made a single zippered bag this year.
Paul(in mock horror): NO.
Me: Even before I finish this thing, I have the next one ready to go, with no time to play ...
Paul's Covid recovery has been much slower than we'd like. I noticed that the cough syrup was almost gone.
Paul: Nah, I'll just use Dayquil if I need.
Me: Oh Ok.
Paul: Or I'll mix the half dose of Nyquil in the Dayquil.
Me: What? You a pharmacist now?
Paul: Pharmacist? No. Bartender.
This Block Tutorial post marks the beginning of the Positivity 2022 Quilt Along. Although I shared the Sponsors & Prizes, the QAL Schedule and the Fabric Requirements earlier, this is the post where you can actually get started!!!
I am so very excited. But first - a disclaimer.
Think of it this way - I did not discover New York, but I am the driver of this new superfast overnight train to New York (or Chicago, in case you live in New York ...
I am thrilled to announce the generous sponsors for the Positivity 2022 Quilt Along to make Mercyful Quilts. There is a lot of information here, so you may want to bookmark this page.
If you are new to the Positivity QAL or have not heard of Mercyful Quilts, you may have some questions. Well, I have answers :-)
The Palliative Care Unit in the Mercy Hospital gives quilts to their terminally ill patients to bring some measure of comfort to the person and their family as they go through the difficult process of dying. The family ...
Dear Quiltmakers,
Hello quiltmakers,
I am back from my trip to India. Mom's surgery went well and she is on the road to recovery. I appreciate your kind thoughts and warm wishes.
Although my visit wasn't a vacation and I stayed home (near the A/C) due to the heat, my friends (Ruby and Savita) visited me. I felt spoiled with spicy food and sweet mangoes.
Happy to see you :-) |

read more Hello everyone, and happy weekend! So, late last week I was walking across campus, along a new sidewalk, when I kind of fell off the sidewalk. There was a trench of sorts next to the concrete, where they hadn't filled in with dirt yet, and my ankle turned right to the side, exactly the wrong way. Funnily enough, it didn't hurt right away, but later it ballooned up, and it hurt like crazy. The good news is-- soft tissue injury, like a bad sprain. Not broken! The bad news is that it still hurts like crazy.
So, could ...

I've been talking about positivity in our lives and how important it is. And it is -- we need that little glimmer of hope to get us through the bad days.
Well, this UPS business has put my positivity to the test. BIG TIME. I don't how many people I've spoken to. I was switched from department to department. Case numbers were created and then never referred to. I tried to escalate the issue and failed. My calls were transferred, and phones rang and rang with no one to answer them. Some of the agents were downright rude ...

read moreHi everyone! Can you feel the summer winding down? I can, and I want to hang on to it with both hands so it won't go away. Unfortunately, it's so humid that it's far too slippery to hang on to, plus I have a hard time breathing the soup that is our air right now. True fact: it has been so rainy and soupy that this week there was a full-grown frog on our deck. Or maybe it was a toad. I'm no scientist, but it was weird. He just hung out there, then literally hopped ...

Hi everyone! Yes, it's a very rare Sunday post! I'm usually busy doing family stuff-- or scrubbing something-- on the weekends, but I took some pictures of the progress I've made on my Positivity quilts to share today, so that's what I'm doing. Always good to have a plan, isn't it?
You probably know by now that my friend Preeti of Sew Preeti Quilts is running the Positivity Quilt Along to benefit Mercyful Quilts, which is overseen by my friend Bernie. How could I not jump in and support some friends and contribute to ...
read more Hi everyone! How is your week going? I am happy to tell you that the noise from the cicadas is fading. It's fading because they're all done with their life cycle and are now dying in droves. The front walk looks like the site of a massacre. We keep using the leaf blower to clear it because the crunchiness when you go out to the mailbox is really disconcerting, and using a broom is just icky.
Other than that. . .well, I started another quilt, and it turned out to be another positivity quilt for Preeti's quilt along ...
read moreImagine a large buffet like Golden Corral (Paul's favorite). With over fifty items on the table, does it really matter if two or three items are blah? You will only taste 4-5 items, may be 10 if you are more adventurous. Ahem!!!
Now imagine a simple meal of tomato soup and grilled cheese. Everything must be fresh and tasty and well-seasoned. There is no room for blah. It could ruin the entire meal.
Such is this simple Plus Block. With only two main fabrics, it is important that they work well together.
