Plaid Tail Feathers Quilt from Lovin' Life At The End Of The Dirt Road

A few years ago I bought a fat quarter bundle of Moda's Dad's PlaidsI knew I wanted to use it with this patternAfter making this quiltAnd this quiltI knew I wanted one dedicated to plaids. I redrafted the pattern to decrease the block size to 9" and pulled plaids from my stash to scrap things up a bit:I ended up with 45 different plaids. 90 blocks later I had enough for a 9x10 layout. I handed

Photographer was tired............ from Exuberant Color

I was so tired by the time I got to the photography so this Sunday only project is a little tilted.  I have sewn on side borders.  I had 3 leftover strips of triangle squares so I incorporated them in where they matched the orientation in the center blocks.

Then I thought maybe I need to add another border after the first one.  I think the strips need to brighter colors than these that were conveniently laying on my table Since I need to lengthen it more to get it to be a better rectangular shape, it means at least ...

I goofed............ from Exuberant Color

This is the inspiration antique quilt that is the basis for my Sunday only project.  I wasn't paying attention or didn't analyze this closely enough when I started making the strip sets.

I was just zipping along making strips facing both directions.  However all of the strips in the inspiration quilt are the one on the left, either in that position or flipped end for end.

In this photo the top row is all of the correct strips.  The row on the bottom has a mix creating some flying geese type secitons.

So...do I stay true to ...

Design Wall Monday - April 18, 2022 from Small Quilts and Doll Quilts

 Good Morning Quilters!

I’ve moved along a little bit on sewing the pieces together on my design wall.  Here is the current picture:

I take a block to the cutting board, trimmed it to 9.5” x 9.5” and put it back on the design wall.  Then when I have a row all trimmed, I sew them together.  Only the middle two rows are sewn together.  It is taking me more time than I had expected.

The only other quilt I worked on was the chevron quilt.  This quilt was partially sewn together and I didn’t like ...

Design Wall Mondays - April 11, 2022 from Small Quilts and Doll Quilts

Good Morning Quilters!

This is the last month I am working on reducing the plaid stash.  I have the two quilts I talked about last week packaged up ready for the long arm quilter.

So here is another plaid quilt on the design wall.  The squares have to be trimmed to the same size, and sewn together.  I may rearrange some of them before that, but they are on the design wall for a few days to see if this is their final version.

Here's a picture of all the blocks:

And here is a closer picture of the ...

Design Wall Monday - April 4, 2022 from Small Quilts and Doll Quilts

Good Morning Quilters!  The plaid squares within plaids blocks are assembled into a quilt top - almost.  I have to add the outside borders top, bottom, and both sides (solid red).  It is off the floor, and now on the design wall.  The cornerstones are four patches of plaids and whites, which goes well with the rest of the quilt.  It feels good to have another one near the finish line.

Remember those "orphan plaid blocks" that might have been part of this quilt?  I also sewed them into a long strip, and it will be in the middle of the ...

Design Wall Monday - March 28, 2022 from Small Quilts and Doll Quilts

 Good Morning Quilters!

All of the 16 plaid blocks are now complete blocks and I am moving on to making a  quilt top of them.  I have decided to sash them with a solid red, and last night I put them on the floor just before going to bed to see how they would look.  I like it.

I will put something different in the cornerstone spots.  (these hst blocks are too little, and I put them there temporarily to cover the hole where there are no cornerstones yet).

Remember the orphan plaid blocks that I thought might be a ...

Design Wall Monday - March 21, 2022 from Small Quilts and Doll Quilts

 Good Morning Quilters!

I apologize for not answering any comments this past week.  I confess that I am not myself lately.  Grief over the loss of my sister is one explanation and the war in the Ukraine is another.  I appreciate all of you, and hope you understand.

Another week of sewing to reduce my plaid fabrics stash:

More of the plaid blocks were finished and put up on the design wall:

There are 16 of these blocks, so I’m halfway finished.  I will then decide on what color to sash them with - probably a solid color.  Here is ...

Design Wall Monday - March 14, 2022 from Small Quilts and Doll Quilts

Good Morning Quilters!  Did you miss an hour of sleep last night?  They say that Daylight Savings Time has the purpose of making better use of daylight.  There are lots of opinions for and against it, but as a quilter, it doesn’t bother my life.

The big squares quilt is now 2/3’s down from the design wall, and it will be a complete quilt top by next Monday.   I have 5 more columns to sew onto this bigger section.  I put it on the couch for this picture so you can see Penny Lane also.  She is ...

Design Wall Monday - March 7, 2022 from Small Quilts and Doll Quilts

Good Morning Quilters!  A slight hint of spring showed up here on Saturday - it was in the mid 60's.  A lot of the snow melted that day, but now the weather has changed back to our usual 30-40 degrees, and we shall have to wait a little longer before spring comes.

I worked on the plaids projects last week.  I have lots of plaid fabric, and I blogged in January about a few simple quilts to use up some of the plaids (see the pictures here)

This plaid project (8 inch squares surrounded by smaller 2 inch squares) now ...

Design Wall Monday - January 10, 2022 from Small Quilts and Doll Quilts

 Good Morning Quilters!

The new quilting year has started well for me.  As I usually do, I took a look around at the projects I hope to work on in the future.   The list is long, but after reading the internet definition of a UFO (Un-Finished Object), I decided, I don’t have any.  You see, the internet defines a quilter’s UFO as “something you started, but haven’t worked on in over a year”.  I reasoned that if this definition is true (and it must be true because I read it on the internet) then I can change ...

Masks again......... from Exuberant Color

I'm going to blame my lack of energy yesterday on the weather: 45 degrees after high 80s just a few days before.  We gained another inch of rain so that was good.  I continued working on masks, this group for the guys.  Other than this a load of laundry is all I accomplished.

They are talking a possibility of frost overnight tonight.  I have too many plants to cover so I will have to take my chances that it doesn't happen.  I'll be watching the prediction tonight on the weather show and hope it is too warm ...

Two finished for December 2020 from Exuberant Color

The Marcia Derse baby quilt is finished.  The blues are from lines dating back several years.  The white and black are from her line the Opposites (there was a positive and negative of each print). It ended up 35" x 47".

The backing and binding fabric is another from her Opposites line.  Binding is all by machine.

After I finished this one I did a load of laundry and went grocery shopping.

And then I tackled the binding on the big plaid zig zag quilt.  It took over an hour even doing it all by machine.

I wanted to use ...

Zig Zag day............. from Exuberant Color

This quilt top has been on the design wall for a long time and it was finally its day to get quilted yesterday.  I put Martha Negley tree rings fabric on the back.

I did a big loose meander for a super soft quilt.

Then as long as the longarm machine was behaving itself I loaded another quilt.  I had intended to quilt this one on my straight stich machine with lots of parallel lines following the zig zag.  Then I decided I should get real, it's a baby quilt, I just needed to do some quicker quilting.

This ...

More masks.............. from Exuberant Color

I gave away all of the masks I had in inventory so I need to make more.  I think this is the end of the really soft brushed blue denim and I am pairing it with Moda brushed fabrics.  I also got some new type of elastic with the bead for adjustment already on it.

I got 2 of them made last night.  I have some grayed red purple check and stripe in the brushed fabric that I think I will make for myself.

I went out in the late afternoon yesterday and took a picture of my maple tree ...

Design Wall Monday - November 2, 2020 from Small Quilts and Doll Quilts

Well it’s election week here in the United States.  I hope everyone who is a citizen votes November 3rd!  I am looking forward to going to the polls and casting my vote tomorrow.  I know a lot of you probably voted early. In honor of our patriotic duty to vote, I finished my red, white, and blue plaid star quilt.  It now has a new bright red binding, and finished at 61.5 inches square. I would

Many rows later.............. from Exuberant Color

I think I said this quilt will be 72" x 90" so the seams are long.  I finished sewing the 14 seams in one direction and sewed one in the other direction before I gave up last night.  Of course I want to finish it this month so I have 10 more 90" seams to sew today.

My son stopped by yesterday and got my computer with the dead screen hooked up to my Smart TV with an HDMI cable.  My computer screen appeared so now we know the computer is fine, just the screen is bad.  I spent a ...

Assembly............ from Exuberant Color

I had my last live broadcast for the current Colorwash 360 online class yesterday.  I started cleaning off my cabinet so I could start assembling this plaid quilt that I showed on my design wall a few weeks ago.

As promised yesterday here is the close up of my little 12" colorwash.  I think I'm going to change one of the red squares in the top row before I finish it.  It is bugging me.

2/3 of seams sewn................ from Exuberant Color

I have sewn 13 cross seams, 6 to go so I am 2/3 of the way done.  I had a few sidetracks yesterday.

One of them was sewing 5 more masks.  Some had denim on one side and plaid flannel on the other, some had plaid flannel on one side and batik print on the other side.

Indoor garden season is starting.  I have buds on 8 plants.  This white one was my super bloomer last year.

A little design wall time................. from Exuberant Color

I needed a break from cutting so I got out the bag of 6" triangle squares and played at the design wall.  I made these blocks about 2 1/2 years ago and couldn't decide whether to group the like ones together or make it all random.  I'm not sure it is worth spending my time to try another layout while I'm busy with other things and I may just go ahead and sew it.  The blocks are made of all plaids and stripes.  It should end up about 72" x 90".
