Did you know June 14 is National Flag Day here in the United States? It’s the day chosen to commemorate when our young government approved the first design for its first national flag. Since that day way back in 1777, the American flag has become an iconic symbol of freedom around the world.

The Fourth of July is just around the corner, so to celebrate in style, we’re bringing you some star-spangled cross stitch designs to adorn your home. Some would say that a quilt achieves its highest purpose in life when it is gifted to another. When a quilt is created and awarded to a service member or veteran, it says, “Someone cares. Thank you for your service.” The Quilts of Valor Foundation has made it their mission to cover service members and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor (QOV). We’ve created a FREE quilt pattern, William’s Honor, that you can use to make one of these patriotic quilts.

My quilt guild makes patriotic quilts for returning vets. Much like Quilts of Valor, they are done in red, white and blue and many feature star blocks. With what fabric I had left of those colors, I made 15 floating star blocks that will be given to the guild member in charge of the patriotic quilts. At some point, at a workshop, these blocks will be incorporated into a quilt for a vet.

Last Thursday, my quilt guild hosted a luncheon to honor 63 Veterans in our local area.  For the past year, my guild worked diligently to make 21 Quilts of Honor and we presented them to 21 grateful Veterans at this lovely luncheon ceremony.
