Two baby quilts based on paint swatches from I Patch and Quilt

In June I made two quilts for people who were becoming grandparents. I knew the grandparents but not the baby’s parents that well. It was a bit of a puzzle to come up with a color scheme for the baby quilts. Both sets of parents were so kind to sent me their preferred colors and photos of the baby’s room.

Baby #1’s parents really liked the Dutch baby brand ‘Little Dutch’ which had wall paint as part of their collection. I selected some colors from the range that would fit with the colors in the photo of ...

Three requests from I Patch and Quilt

In about 5 weeks or so my brother and his wife will be welcoming their first child, a baby boy. The color scheme of the baby’s bedroom is based on a soft minty color that has a grey undertone. They gave me a color swatch in the form of a the paint stick they had used and asked me to match it in a baby quilt.

I was able to match it pretty perfectly! Yay for big fabric stashes!

Most of my fabric stash is actually made up out of Fat Quarters, so I can add a lot of ...

Scraphappy October from I Patch and Quilt

Last month I joined Kate and Gun’s Scraphappy group. Around the middle of each month we share something made from scraps. Today I worked on some scrappy blocks.

I have been making these for quite some time, but I have a lot of scraps left. I am only using the left overs from my scraps when I cut most of them into 2,5″ squares a while back.

All of the remaining bits, I will eventually sew up into colorful blocks. I have been contemplating what to do with them and I found two interesting options.

Option 1. A ...

Spool Star Holiday wreath from I Patch and Quilt

Do you remember the small wallhanging that I made using my foundation paper pieced Spool Star block? Playing with the Spool Star block is turning out very inspiring. So many ideas!

Let’s look at the first new layout, a Holiday wreath!

The traditional red and green, with some vintage-style blue and pink.

This block works so well with solids or blender-type fabrics, which I have a lot of….

Spool Star introductions from I Patch and Quilt

Quite a few years ago I drew some quilt designs in a notebook, which I promptly forgot about.

When cleaning and sorting through the papers in my sewing room this Summer, I came across this notebook again. One of the designs I had come up with, I want to present to you today. I have named the block ‘Spool Star’.

The block itself is derived from the traditional spool block, but constructed differently, thus making it possible to usetwo different colors in one block. Putting these block together will create interlocking stars. To some they may look like pinwheels instead ...

One for the brother. from I Patch and Quilt

My brother needed a new quilt, I decided.

A blue, teal and grey one to use on the couch while watching tv.

I found a great free pattern offered by Free Spirit. The design is by Tula Pink and it looks great in her fabric of course. But my brother is not really into pinks, oranges and greens, so I busted out my precious Libs Elliot and Giucy Giuce fabric collections and threw in some more extra goodies!

I started piecing just one type of the blocks and filled in the empty spaces with the second type. This way I ...
