Sunday Chat – Cactus, Leftovers and Wildlife from From My Carolina Home

Are you enjoying this Thanksgiving Weekend and beginning of the holiday season? I sure am! This weekend, my Thanksgiving cactus burst into bloom all over. I think these blooms are so interesting, with their shapes that make me think of little rockets.

The plant has blooms all over, most are red.

On the other side, there are a few yellow ones blooming, and more buds on the way on the fronds behind.

Several people asked about the difference between the Christmas and Thanksgiving cacti on the leaf shape. The spiky ones are Thanksgiving. But if you cannot decide, look at ...

In the bleak midwinter - correction from Quilting Studio Adventures

My mom died 9 years ago December 22.  It was actually 8 years ago, not 9.  I had to admit to all three sibs I was wrong.  Her death was welcomed and peaceful.  I remember spending the next few weeks adding stitches to the quilt I was working on - and at that point  I was still an emerging hand quilter.  And now at this time of year in these deeply dark and cold days, I find hand stitching so comforting.  A week ago I started adding stitches to this quilt.  Its owner says this quilt top is 90 years old ...

Use It Up! from From the Strawberry Patch...

You've heard the old adage before: "Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without". Well, that's what I'm doing, with my batting strips. I buy batting on 30 yd. rolls, the width is either 93" or 122" depending on if it's a queen or king-size roll. When I cut batting for specific quilts I am usually left with ample sized strips remaining, they're never discarded; the proof is shown in the photo

New Quilt Project from Quilting Stories

Panettone

It has been a long time since I started a new quilting project. Missing quilting...
After reorganizing my closet I found various leftovers, among which those solid colors, and I wonder wether they could match or not in a new quilt. I am thinking of a simple and quickly sewn quilt like a nine patch or a four patch.

I love the four patch quilts but I always found the most difficult to match the colors, and was often disappointed with the result. Sometimes the most simple things are the most difficult to succeed in.

As regards my fabric shelves ...

Holiday Leftovers from From My Carolina Home

This year with a smaller turkey, we won’t have as much in the way of leftovers, but still, it is nice to make a fresh meal with a different flavor than our traditional Thanksgiving feast.  I thought today would be a great day to show you some recipes to make the leftovers taste like a new dish with different flavors. Starting off, here’s my  Leftover Chicken or Turkey Mornay. This is a light version of a classic dish, scrumptious with the topping of mornay sauce and lots of cheese.  It’s a great meal to use your individual ...

Needs only a label . . . from Elsie Quilts

This is a practice quilt made from leftovers from Brown Scrappy I. There were five blocks and lots of bits, so with improve, this showed up. It is about 30 x 60 and my first attempt at feathers on the longarm. Don't look too close. The binding looks good though. It will hang in an obscure place in my house . Now to get the big one finished. It is 80 blocks like the five in the middle of this one, with black sashing so will need to be ditch-quilted to keep them square. Could take a while! :-)

Off and On the Longarm... from Elsie Quilts

The baby quilt is finished. A lousy picture, but I'm getting lazy in my old age. It's a panel, added a border, and practiced nine different fillers in the background. Backing is soft flannelette.

The one below is a scrappy quilt made from the leftover pieces for a larger scrappy. It is about 36 x 60 and perfect for practicing. I've never tried feathers before. I'm a coward. However, decided to attack and do some large, free-motion feathers around the outside. There are five blocks in a row and I'm doing them in simple lines ...

National Quilting Day @home from Sew Sunshine

My goal for National Quilting day this year, since the International Quilt Museum festivities here in Lincoln were cancelled, was to quilt this baby quilt.
The blocks are leftovers from another quilt I made for this ones big brother. (I have a 2 week old great nephew to get to now) :)
It measures 53" x 53"
I did a diagonal crosshatch because the blocks and the borders I put on the corners made it sort of stretchy.

I started marking the lines on Saturday morning with the hera marker. So easy to use and no messy marks to wash out ...

A Finish and Another Sew-Along from From the Strawberry Patch...

This finish has been a long time in the making. This small quilt is the result of the Temecula Quilt Co. 2015 Summer Sampler Sew-Along. I was diligent (in the beginning) about keeping up with the blocks as posted on their blog.  I decided to do mine using the black and white scraps (generously sized leftovers!) that I fell heir to after my mother finished her own black and white quilt.  She

Acorn Squash for a Fresh Side Dish from From My Carolina Home

I have one more new recipe for you for an easy side dish that will freshen up the turkey or ham leftover dinners.  It is nice enough for a special meal, like Christmas eve, but easy enough for a Tuesday night meal too.  Acorn squash is easy to cook and has a fresh squash flavor, mild yet not sweet like a butternut.

Acorn Squash Recipe at FromMyCarolinaHome.com

An acorn squash is usually green, but one with a bit of orange is OK.

Cut the squash in half, using the natural contour makes that easy.

Inside it looks a lot like a pumpkin.
