Weekly update: many activities, little sewing from With Strings Attached

Who says we can't try new things?  After decades of a Saturday luncheon, this year the AAUW gathering was on Friday at  Lamb's Farm.  It's a residential vocational center for adults with disabilities. Their restaurant servers are clients.   Of course we don't just eat -- we raise money!  There's a white elephant/silent auction, a 50/50 cash raffle, and the quilt raffle.

The winner is a member of the Naperville branch. She and I will meet up sometime soon for the handoff.

The quilt raised $390 for the AAUW  Greatest Needs Fund (unrestricted support for ...

Weekly update: lots going on but not sewing! from With Strings Attached

The Zion Woman's Club held its annual ladies' night bunco party Friday evening.  64 women (some girls, too) came out to play.   Most of them were first-timers though there were some who come every year.  Great fun was had by all!

The Moose Lodge gives us a great deal on the room--$100.  The other benefit is that their bar/restaurant are open so those who want an alcoholic drink can purchase at the bar and bring it upstairs.

My friend Suzanne won the 50/50 cash raffle ($173 to her, $173 to the club).  My P.E.O ...

Weekly update: goings-on and a new flimsy from With Strings Attached

On Thursday food historian Catherine Lambrecht was the guest speaker at the Clara Cummings Book Club luncheon. I first heard Cathy when she gave the program for the Zion Woman's Club (in March, 2022).  This time she talked about the traditions of pie.

Illinois grows and processes more pie pumpkins than any other state.  The variety shown in the photo is the hybrid most used. It is a cross between the Tennessee field pumpkin and butternut squash.   The array of apples are those grown in a heritage orchard here in Winthrop Harbor.  (It's not open to the public ...

Weekly update: all the hikes, a concert, Labor Day, and two new starts + OMG September from With Strings Attached

Hooray!  I've finished the 12 listed routes for Hike Lake County 2023 plus the 13th wild card/hiker's choice.   Saturday #12 Fort Sheridan.   We were there in July (this post) but the HLC trail went in another direction.   Sunday #13 we revisited Lyons Woods which is close to home on the border between Beach Park and Waukegan.

Clockwise:  Obedient plant, jack-in-the-pulpit, ironweed, hyssop, nightshade, yellow jewel weed.

Here's the log where I've kept track of each hike.  I'll get a metal shield that looks like the new HLC logo (shown in the photo).    Note that ...

Weekly update: farewells and new beginnings (with music) from With Strings Attached

2020:  a drive-by birthday parade to honor Sally
Saturday morning I attended the memorial service for Sally Zeit who passed away in December at age 94.  I first met her in AAUW as our branch voter registration chair (coordinating training for voter registrars and then registration events).  She connected my husband to the Lake County chaplaincy agency where he served as a nursing home and hospice chaplain.  We attended many church services for which she was the organist.  But I'd only known her as a fierce and feisty senior citizen.   Her memorial service provided a life story of decades ...

Weekly update: pink and a lot more! from With Strings Attached

Friday, 6:30 a.m.:  I shoveled the driveway and front walk before I'd had any coffee!   We got about 3" from the storm.  (Milwaukee, 45 miles north, got 9".)

Saturday evening we enjoyed the Lake County Symphony Orchestra's performance of Mahler's Symphony No. 1.

I enjoyed a long, albeit muddy walk on Sunday afternoon.  Upper left:  beaver lodge.  Lower right:  horsetails greening up and dogwood reddening up.

Friday afternoon I delivered the I Spy baby quilt to Eva, the baby's great-great-grandmother.  Eva is 92 and still lives on her own!  We had a lovely visit ...

Weekly update: ninth flimsy + WIP from With Strings Attached

The Lake County Symphony Orchestra's Welcome Christmas concert was Saturday evening.  Guest soloists sang recitatives  from the Messiah.    Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite was mashed up with Duke Ellington's Nutcracker Sweets -- the symphonic version vs. the jazz version.  The concert ended with an audience sing-along to Leroy Anderson's Christmas Festival.

There was a raffle to win a chance to conduct the orchestra in Anderson's "Sleigh Ride."  A guy named Bill was the winner. "Have you ever conducted before?" asked Ron, the real conductor. "Never!" Bill replied.  Fortunately the musicians knew the piece very well!

Weekly update: turtles, music, sewing UPDATE!, and reading from With Strings Attached

It rained all day Friday -- 1.8" accumulation, which helps compensate for the severe drought we had in 2021.  Saturday was glorious:  80 degrees and sunny!  I walked the entire 2.5 mile trail at Pine Dunes.  I saw two turtles and three hawks.

The Lake County Symphony Orchestra's annual jazz + classics concert was Saturday evening featuring five compositions by Dave Brubeck followed by Dvorak's New World Symphony.   Wonderful music!

There was a Covid outbreak among the church choir members after the Easter service.  No choir this morning and we were back to alternating pews and masks required ...

Weekly update: on the trail, a concert, a flimsy!, and reading from With Strings Attached

The ornaments I hung along the trail last week pretty much survived the severe winds (gusts of 65 mph on Wednesday).   Two had blown off their hangers onto the ground and I rehung them. Some lost the red paint (lower right).  And two were joined by someone else's contributions.

We enjoyed the Lake County Symphony Orchestra Christmas concert on Saturday evening.   They played woodwind, strings, and brass medleys  of Christmas songs arranged by Leroy Anderson and the entire orchestra played Anderson's well-known Sleigh Ride.

Weekly update: convention, concert, the whole nine yards, new ideas, and reading from With Strings Attached

On Friday afternoon I walked along the fire lane at the northwestern edge of the state park, less than a mile from home.  I saw a beaver lodge (upper right) and several beaver-chewed trees.  Were the beavers trying to sabotage the fire lane?

A brisk northeast wind brought whitecaps to the lake. It was chilly but clear.  There's a pair of bald eagles nesting in that part of the park. My quest this season is to see them one day.

Friday evening and a good part of Saturday were spend Zooming with AAUW-Illinois colleagues for the 96th annual state ...

Weekly update: hints of spring, multiple projects, and reading from With Strings Attached

March began with a flurry of activities.  On Wednesday we got our first Covid vaccine shots at CTCA, the hospital in Zion. It was quick and we had no side effects. The second shot is scheduled for March 31.

On Saturday evening we went to the first indoor concert in exactly a year. (The last time was March 7, 2020.)  Only 50 people were in attendance with ample social distancing. The Lake County Symphony Orchestra featured a percussionist (marimba and vibraphone) and a brass quintet.

Spring is in the air with lots of sunshine and mild temperatures. . It was great ...

Weekly updates: tote bags, counter tops and frolics (holiday and quilting) from With Strings Attached

The tote bags I made for the school children in Nepal have been delivered.  Margaret, my friend who supports the school and asked if I could help out, sent this photo of the kids.  It was taken by the school's U.S. coordiantor. (The sign says, "Thank you dear Nann Hilyard.")

[For those who are interested in the school and the parent organization: Impact Schools ]

The counter tops were installed Friday.   I had no idea there were so many choices for faucets until I had to choose one.  (The first one I sort of liked was $1400.  The second ...
