Week 45 of 2020 from High Road Quilter

When I let Zeus out yesterday afternoon, I noticed a bird beautifully silhouetted in front of my neighbor's tree with the orange leaves. We have had fabulous colors this year, and this tree has never stood out to me. I ran inside to get the camera and when I came back, it was still there. When I zoomed in, I could see the bird clearly.  In fact, the bird stayed there and posed for me until I had more pictures than I could ever need. Most of them came out sharp and clear.

Work on the quote quilt continues ...

Week 44 from High Road Quilter

For a while now, my washer and my dryer have been competing in a race to see which one will need to be replaced first. Sometimes the dryer won't dry all the way through. Sometimes the washer will make a strange noise or have smelly clothes at the end of the wash and need to rewash.  This week, we have declared a winner.

The winner? The hot water heater. It came out from nowhere. Second place? the shredder. I knew with all the shredding I was doing for the basement cleanup, it would need replaced at the end. I ...

Letters from High Road Quilter

My next addition to the Quote Quilt is this Letters. Getting letters in the mail has always been fun for me, and I have had many pen pals over the years, starting at a young age when I exchanged letters with an aunt.

I tore out the motif out of the paper, and really like that torn paper look. It makes me think about the scrapbook and junk journal videos I have been watching, so I tried to replicate that shape.

It is hard to do with needle turn applique. My original placement was too close to the stones and ...

When This You See Remember Me from High Road Quilter

Another week, another batch of additions to the quote quilt. As usual, I underestimated how much time it will take to do something, so there are still a couple more things I want to add before I start thinking about the backing of this quilt. This covers up a duplicate quote. I like the simplicity of this picture.

While I was in this area, I went ahead and added flowers to the heart / vase. I decided to add them as a rectangle to get as many of the flowers in there as possible, even if some of them get hidden ...

Many More Additions to the Quote Quilt from High Road Quilter

As the weather is getting cooler, I am thinking about the end of the year. I want to get the basement cleanup and the quote quilt finished by the end of the year and the cooler weather is motivating me to finish up.

I think I should get the quote quilt top done close to the end of this quarter so I have time to get a backing. There won't be a lot of quilting but I will have to tack it down, probably by hand, and then bind it. I want to leave myself plenty of time to ...

A Quilt for the Quilting Lady from High Road Quilter

Back in  March, I showed you the Quilting Lady I added to the Quote Quilt, along with her inspirational picture. I planned to add the quilt that my niece made me. I showed the charm quilt to you in July 2010.

I have finally gotten the charming quilt out to audition it for the quote quilt. Here's a reminder of the charming quilt.  The photos are better now with a better camera and lighting. The quilt is made out of squares of adorable fabric and is completely hand stitched.  There are little charms attached - two pairs of scissors, a ...

Basement Cleanup Additions to the Quote Quilt from High Road Quilter

The Konmari method of cleaning of the basement continues. Each and every thing that is down there needs my permission to live there.  Since it is a storage area, there is a lot to look through and many decisions to make.

The latest box contained old files I put there to archive. It serves as a time capsule of  when I worked at my previous employer, was a foster parent, was going to court over child support, and going to school.  It was a pivotal time for sure, but none of these things apply to my current life so I ...

Purple Feather from High Road Quilter

This video shows a wonderful quilt that represents a style of quilting I really like. I discovered it this week. It is a crazy quilt that has less to do with combining luxurious fabrics and more to do with combining wonderful embroidery and motifs.  I am not sure if this style has a name. Collage quilt might work, but there are many types of collage quilts.

This video is like a stitch-with-me.  A relaxing way to pass the time. At the beginning of the video, she shows what looks like a finished quilt, and during this hour long video, she ...

Rose and Fierce Girl from High Road Quilter

The weather cooled down this week. It was a foreshadowing of autumn. I should have painted the coffee table and the porch, but I really didn't want the rose to take another two weeks, so I finished the rose. It is pulling the fabric a little bit, but not as much as I expected. I really tried to keep the stitches loose. It does look like a rose though, so I am happy with how it turned out.

While I was at it, I also made Fierce Girl. I was inspired by Fearless Girl statue on Wall Street. Fierce ...

Hothouse Rose from High Road Quilter

When I showed you the quote quilt last weekend, I had pinned a paper pattern of the rose I planned to add next. It is a fairly long rose. Since it spans three rows, I had to find just the proper space that has room on the left and right sides of the quote and blue blocks as needed. I tried three or four spaces until I found one that would accommodate the motif.

I decided to make the rose using a satin stitch. Crazy quilts need satin stitch motifs and a rose seems like a good satin stitch motif ...

Inspirational Quote Quilt Revisited from High Road Quilter

In my last post, I revealed a finished pinwheel quilt as my mini of the month of July. Please go back to admire it if you didn't get a chance yet, since finishes are quite rare on my blog.

Since it is finished, I am continuing to work to the Inspirational Quote crazy quilt which was being made concurrently with the pinwheel quilt.

This week, I gave the dog a dog house. He shouldn't have painted the chimney green, because it is hard to see.

It's been a while since I have shown the whole quilt, so ...

15 Minutes to Stitch from High Road Quilter

I am a couple of days late with my 15 minutes to stitch recap.  To my credit, it is much better than my lateness in some other weeks. I stitched this dog a few weeks ago.

2020:  Week 29 of 15 Minutes to Stitch

During this week, which was chronologically last week, I stitched the tea cup.

I also thought of ideas for the memorial block.  Right now, I think that instead of making a block with headstones with names on them, I might make a little booklet instead. I really like the idea of a cemetery gate, and a ...

Motif Planning from High Road Quilter

When I select motifs for the inspirational quote quilt, I look for designs that are simple to stitch. Designs that are calming or whimsical, that potentially bring a smile or a sigh of contentment or peace to the viewer. But since it is made during a long time frame 2002-2020, I considered adding some historical reference. Since I had added the corona-virus block, maybe some references to other things that happened during this time period.

I immediately thought about 9/11, but that happened before 2002.  It was something that probably affected the fabric and the quotes that were chosen ...

Additions to the Quote Quilt from High Road Quilter

It is amazing how much quilting you can get done when you are procrastinating cleaning out the basement!  I had a week of evenings working on the quote quilt while listening to an audiobook while keeping Zeus company as he fretted over fireworks or thunderstorms, depending on the day.

This space was supposed to be filled with a scene but I kept thinking of motifs I wanted to add so it became that instead.

This guy was sitting in the inspiration photo but standing seemed better for the quote so I am leaving his legs like that. Plus I don ...

Two More Weekly Stitching Reports from High Road Quilter

I joined a food delivery service for the adventure of it.  Just a couple of weeks worth to see how it was and try out different foods. It is fun, but the dishes have a lot of calories, and there is a lot of the cost is in the packaging and delivery. It was a nice change of pace though.

2020:  Week 22 of 15 Minutes to Stitch

I didn't do any stitching this week.  We had a lot of rain last week, and a tiny trickle of water in the basement.  Although there wasn't any damage in ...

Two Weeks of Stitching from High Road Quilter

I skipped my stitching report last week because I didn't have much to show for my work, and not much photographic evidence. It is nicer this week since I have pictures to share now.  I'll share the mini quilt when it is finished, hopefully by the end of the month, so these photos are of the quote quilt.

2020:  Week 20 of 15 Minutes to Stitch

Last week, I managed to work on my mini quilt every day, but they were tiny pieces of time. I don't clock my time since I generally pass 15 minutes, so ...

Three Weeks of Stitching from High Road Quilter

I've missed some weekly recaps so this is three weeks worth of stitching.

2020:  Week 17 of 15 Minutes to Stitch

Since my job disappeared for the entire calendar year due to school closures this spring, my employer offered me another stay at home that pays about 70% of my pay.  This week, I had finished the training and was actually doing this job.  There is a lot to remember and this is like a customer service job where you talk to lots of people who are anxious. While they are all nice to me, I picked up a ...

Weekly Stitching Post from High Road Quilter

I've continued working on the quote quilt this week. I stole this idea of "She withstood the storm" from a Facebook post. The umbrella fabric is used in the drunkard's path quilt and the dress fabric is used in the yo-yos. I will embroider the words and work more on her hair and the boat.

This design is from the book I recently reviewed on my High Road Reader blog.

I made this bird a while ago, but don't think I have shown it yet. It is more subtle than most of the motifs so hopefully will ...

We Can Get Through Anything from High Road Quilter

When I mentioned that this block made me think of coronavirus and how this block may provide historical context to the quilt as well as being uplifting to future quilt viewers, my blog readers convinced me to add my thoughts to the quilt. "If we can get through corona virus, we can get through anything."

It was my last week of work and I don't expect much work from this employer for the rest of 2020.  It's been raining and storming at night, which means I have to sleep on the couch to keep Zeus company since he ...

Quote Quilt Progress from High Road Quilter

Sometimes I hesitate to post a midweek progress post, in case there isn't anything picture-worthy to post at the end of the week. I hesitated this week too, but I have plenty more to show you that I added to the quote quilt during the second half of the week.

This elephant comes from a fabric that I purchased myself. It is probably the only fabric I have ever bought for myself that was bought at full price.   I have heard of the philosophy that instead of buying lots of things on sale, you should buy that one special ...
