Sunday Chat – Garden, Cooking, Sewing and a little Philosophy from From My Carolina Home

Our little goldfinch flock continues to visit the smorgasbord, and a few cardinals are now stopping by regularly. I think I have a mated pair and two of their juveniles. This is a juvenile male, he looks a little moth-eaten, with his baby feathers molting and the new brighter red ones growing. I’ve seen another female juvenile, and she was being fed by an adult. Pretty soon they will know how to get food on their own.

There is a pair of downy woodpeckers living nearby as well. This is the female.

Sunday Chat from From My Carolina Home

It is Apple Festival weekend, the start of the fall season for me. Although all is still green outside, my heart is ready for colorful leaves, pumpkins, football games, wearing sweaters on cool days, and warm comfort food. This week I was delighted with the cool mornings, and amazingly was able to capture a visiting hummingbird making the rounds of my scraggly verbena and petunias. Lovely, isn’t she?

She stayed long enough for me to get several photos, most came out blurry but this one was clear enough to see her well enough.

"In the Garden" Again: Hummingbird and Fuchsia from Telling Stories Through the Needle's Eye

Spring is waning and summer is near. Porches are bedecked with hanging flower pots brimming with blooms, and among my (Teri's) favorites is the fuchsia. Its colors are so vibrant and the design is magnificently detailed—a perfect companion to our little feathered friend, the hummingbird. You won't believe how fun it is to create these ribbon fuchsias, and they aren't as hard as they look like they'd be—promise! It feels a bit magical when you are gathering these petals.
