Why Save Tiny Fabric Scraps? from Podunk Pretties

Hi Friends!  Over the years many a quilter has questioned my obsession with saving the tiniest of scrap fabrics like the ones you see here.  These are the most recent scraps produced during the cutting of Part 3 of the 2024 Quiltville Old Town Mystery Quilt.

The answer is simple...If I think I can put a stitch in it, I keep it. The two metal tins below are sitting on the table next to my sewing machine.  This is where random triangles produced during cutting are stored until they can be stitched together.

This week while I was stitching ...

Secret Project Reveal! from The Cozy Quilter

For a few months now, I have been talking about a secret project. My cousin has finally received her quilt and so now I can show it to you, my blog readers!  I did some sleuthing to find out my cousin's favourite colours and was told green and purple. I raided my stash to find several purples and greens that looked good together as well as a piece of gray hash dot fabric leftover from my modern sampler quilt.  I had just enough of the gray fabric and even had to piece a few of the triangles to have ...

Jumping From This To That from Podunk Pretties

Remember the baggies full of HST's created over my quilting lifetime?  It's time to add a few more to the baggies from my current Twinkler quilt.  Tackling them in small batches as they are produced is easier than doing them all at once after the quilt is finished.

The quilt will produce 336 bonus HST's!  I used my handy dandy homemade locking HST ruler. It makes the process so much quicker.  If you would like to make one of your own, I made a YT video a few years ago.

The HST's from this project are ...

More Quilts for Survivors Blocks from The Cozy Quilter

I decided to make lots of HST's for this week's batch of blocks for Quilts for Survivors.  I did not have very much of either of these two fabrics for this block--I ended up piecing the middle square from three pieces of fabric to make it big enough.  You probably would not have noticed if I had not told you!

How about some flying geese?

Slanted Diamonds

Broken Dishes

Economy block variation

I actually have 14 blocks ready to donate now.  Two of them are not in this picture. Only 6 more to go to meet my goal ...

Sweet Scrappy HST's from Podunk Pretties

Hi Friends!  This week I took a little time to wrap up a few loose ends in the studio.  That's a nice way of saying I'm a messy quilter and needed to clean up my mess.

After sorting and organizing the many baskets of scrap fabrics from this years projects I decided it was a good time to sort through these small bins that hold the scrap triangles needing to be made into HST's.  These triangles are from flippy corner cut offs and binding cut offs.

Sorting them by size and color made piecing them go pretty ...

Starting A New Quilt ~ 364 HST's! from Podunk Pretties

What better way to end the year than with a new Christmas quilt for my bed.  The 364 half square triangles are the hardest part of this quilt so might as well make them first.

This weekend I made 224 HST's using the Magic 8 method.  If you've never heard of this method, a google search should be all you need.  Seems like everyone has made a tutorial for this one, even me many years ago.

The HST's were made a tad bigger than needed so they could be trimmed to the perfect size.

To speed up ...

A Variety of Projects from The Cozy Quilter

Somehow, I managed to do some sewing almost every day this past week. Two sunflowers are almost done in this quadrant of my sunflower cross stitch.  I also added a bee and some leaves.

I'm going to a wedding shower tomorrow for my cousin's daughter.  If you know her, please don't spill the beans.  I am quite sure that the bride to be does not read my blog!  I made her these pillowcases--they like to go camping so the canoe fabric was chosen with this in mind.

I also made her two coiled rope hot pads.  The ...

Quilt Ideas For Half Square Triangles from Podunk Pretties

Hi Quilty Friends!  I'm still working my tail off in the yard and garden but my heart is quilting.  Dreaming of future projects and of course finishing the current Lone Star quilt.  But the THOUSANDS of half square triangles are front and center of my quilty brain.

As I troll through the internet at the end of the day I'm always on the lookout for quilt blocks and patterns with lots of HST's or Flying Geese blocks.  Because we all know two HST's make one flying goose block.

And of course any block or quilt would ...

THE END ~ I'M DONE! from Podunk Pretties

Hello Quilty Friends!  It has finally come to an end.  The endless hours of of trimming HST's is over.  Halleluiah!

While working my way though thousands of HST's it was fun to take a walk down memory lane.  Funny how we can remember each little piece of fabric.  Most of the time I remember exactly where I got the fabric, the designer or manufacturer and of course the quilt I made using that fabric.  These black and red HST's are from around 2005.  The red is from Walmart and the black is a Joann Fabrics.

My oldest ...

A Dad Day from Podunk Pretties

Hi Quilty Friends!  Almost no quilting was done yesterday due to chores, errands and visiting with my dad.

He is 76 and takes care of himself, the house and 6 acres all on his own.

However he's not much of a cook, so I take him a good home cooked meal every now and then.

It was nice to just walk around the property and enjoy a beautiful spring day.

Once I finally got home there was still chores needing to be done so I only squared up a few more HST's before realizing how tired I was ...

Quilting Chaos from Podunk Pretties

Hello Quilting Friends.  Today's post is something I'm sure some you will be able to understand.  Having multiple projects in progress and the chaos that can happen.  Thirty plus years of quilting and I still haven't learned to manage the multiple projects without being a total slob.

Projects in the picture above
1.  Two  gingham quilts(pink and yellow) in progress.
2.  Fabric for the next gingham quilt for the month of May.
3. Fabric for my next Lone Star quilt.
 4.  The first pattern to use up some of the HST's I've been trimming ...

Dog Day and Scrappy Pink Quilt Backing from Podunk Pretties

Hello Quilty Friends!  The last few days have been absolutely beautiful  here in Podunk.  Sunny and 70's! It's the perfect weather for walking the dog.  Yesterday we got in our walk early in the day and then it was time to get in the kitchen to make my girl Khaleesi some doggy treats. (video of my girl Khaleesi at the bottom of this post)

If I don't make dog treats Mr. Podunk buys some of the worst dog treats.  Treats filled full of things not fit for man nor beast.  Khaleesi is a rescue dog and requires ...

More HST's and An Afternoon In The Kitchen from Podunk Pretties

Hello Quilting Friends!  Did you stitch up something sweet yesterday?  Friday was a busy day for me and very little time was spent in my Studio.  The HST's were my top priority and were finished early in the day.

As I pulled out the next baggie of 100 HST's to be squared I thought "lets time how long it takes to square them up".

Not just the trimming process, the whole process from the time I open the bag until they are finished and stored.

So I turned on the ID channel and listened to one of the ...

HST Progress And Throwback Thursday from Podunk Pretties

They say the way to complete a large overwhelming task is to break it up into small chunks.  Sounds like a good plan.  The task I'll be tackling once again is squaring up over 3,000 half square triangles.

How many HST's should I tackle in a day? 100? 200?   Yesterday's doable chunk was 139 HST's!  The plan was to do whatever I could until my lower back said it was time to stop.  Today, I think I'll see if sitting on a stool at the cutting table will allow me to get more done ...

Wedding Shower Gift and RSC purple Drunkard's path blocks from The Cozy Quilter

We were away visiting our daughter last weekend and did not get home until Wednesday night which meant that there was not a lot of sewing time this week. Since the end of July is quickly approaching, I needed to get my purple Rainbow Scrap Challenge blocks finished up.  The colour for August is orange so I will dig out my orange scrap bin and my orange selvages this coming week.

Our daughter is in her friend's wedding party this fall. I decided to make the bride some hot pads as a wedding shower gift.  These are the colours ...

Two Quilt Backs and Some Knitting. from The Cozy Quilter

I tackled one of my least favourite parts of making a quilt this past week, not once but twice!  Some people don't like hand stitching the binding but for me the worst task is piecing the backing.  My lupin quilt used 8 yards of fabric for the backing and wrestling all of that fabric through the machine while trying to keep it all from falling on the floor is not fun. BUT, it's done now and ready to take to the long arm quilter's house.  Phew!

A group of friends is participating in our own little UFO ...

This Week's Sewing Adventures from The Cozy Quilter

It's been a busy week in the sewing room at my house!  The log blocks really did nothing to enhance my Oxford Quilter's Guild VP day challenge quilt so I removed them and made a few more HST's. I rearranged the HST's to my liking and then started sewing the rows together.  Most of the rows are sewn and the top two are sewn to each other.  I will likely finish this top this week. I love the Shweshwe fabrics I have used for this project!

I finished the embroidery on my Lupine quilt label this ...

Embroidery, Binding and What's on my Design Wall from The Cozy Quilter

For my slow stitching this week, I spent some time working on my embroidered quilt label for my Lupine quilt.  I removed the blue pen marks from the parts that I have done already.  I had to do some unstitching when I used only two strands of floss instead of three when I started stitching the black letters this week.  Oops!  I must say it is harder to unstitch embroidery than machine stitching!

I added the binding to another comfort quilt this week and started hand stitching it on the back.  This is a biggish square quilt so I anticipate ...

Prepping for Guild Sewing Day and some Hand stitching. from The Cozy Quilter

I'm not one of those quilters who cuts everything out before starting to sew a quilt.  I like to cut a little, sew a little, press a little and then repeat until I have enough blocks. This week, I started getting ready for the Vice President's Challenge day at the Oxford Quilters Guild next Saturday.  This event, usually in person, will be on Zoom again this year.  I needed several fat quarters and some yardage for background for this project.  We are to prepare a whole bunch of HST's before the sewing day.  I am using some ...

The Joy of HST's ~ Stitch, Clip and Flip Fun! from Podunk Pretties

Here it is a new year and I'm at the same place I was last year.  How about you?  I've got  HST's galore!  Years of snipping, clipping and telling myself  "I'll deal with those next week, next month or when I finish this project."  Oh the joy of creating extra HST's with every quilt, or cutting off the extra and saving them for a someday that never comes.  In my mind there's always a fabulous
