Weekly update: back to sewing with stash report and OMG from With Strings Attached

It's a wildflower wonderland here in northeasternmost Illinois.  We went to Ethel's Woods and Pine Dunes.

Compass plant, false white indigo, monada/bee balm, mountain mint. butterfly weed, show tick trefoil, rattlesnake master, pickerelweed, Culver's root.

Bumblebee on a purple coneflower and a flock of little yellow butterflies.

The Lake County Symphony Orchestra performed on Thursday evening.   The tuba solo (Strauss's Happy Farmer) was fun.

Though we missed the fireworks at the park in Zion the neighborhood was a-poppin' with firecrackers until nearly midnight.  The smell of the powder was heavy the next morning.

Friday check in: sandal karma + string flimsies from With Strings Attached

Temperatures in the mid- to upper 80's mean open windows and the seasonal transfer of winter clothes and summer clothes between the basement cedar closet and the bedroom.  I know that we'll have a cool-down (it's too soon to plant tomatoes) but the warmth and sunshine are promising.

I found my mid-70's Dr. Scholl's sandals on the shelf in the cedar closet.

Did you have a pair? Why did I haul them from Missouri to Texas to Kansas to Maine to North Dakota to Illinois where they have been in the basement closet for 19 ...

Weekly update: OMG, RhodyTrail, an unexpected finish, and reading from With Strings Attached

Christmas Day was sunny and mild. While the roast beef was in the oven* we went to Lyons Woods.  Someone has hung many ornaments on a pine tree along the trail.

*The roast was delicious. I deliberately bought a big one and we will enjoy the leftovers.

I bought 20 Agatha Christie mysteries at a fundraising auction and gave them to Stevens for Christmas. These will keep him occupied for a while.

(These 20 are not a complete set. Apparently there are 83 in this edition,)

Friday check in: goal accomplished and a new project from With Strings Attached

I first read "In Flanders Fields" in junior high. The powerful image has stayed with me all these years.  Take a couple of minutes to read about the inspiration  in this story

Our Rotary program (Zoom) on Thursdas was about Quilts of Valor. The presenter is a quilting friend who is an active QOV volunteer (and a veteran herself).  Rotary members were impressed.  I learned a lot more, too.

My OMG for November is to quilt three flimsies.  I've done that!  I showed  photo of the first on Monday.  Here are the other two.  The backings for both are ...

Weekly update: a finish . . . and acquisitions from With Strings Attached

Autumn is in the air.  A squirrel left this black walnut at our back door which opens onto the garage. The closest black walnut tree is at the far end of the across-the-street neighbors' yard.

The smoke from the western wildfires affected the sunrise over Lake Michigan.  (I was never outside at the right time to catch the fire-reddened sunset.)

In the studio:   I finished quilting Serendipity Strings.  (The design concept came from Lynn/Klein Meisje -- she calls them serendipity snakes.)  The back uses a miscellany of light blue prints. It's approx. 68 x 84.

.

I used up a ...

Friday report: blocks made and sent, the flock comes together, and batik bonanza from With Strings Attached

We got 1.67" of badly-needed rain Thursday evening.

I was going to make 60 string blocks as my contribution to the HeartStrings memorial for Marianne, but I miscounted and made 61.  I mailed them along with some fabric to Sue in Minnesota.

I decided against sashing the GITP blocks. Because I was careful about the size of each unit and thus each block, all the seams match up. (Yay!)

Here is the quilt that inspired this project. I am contemplating using the border (intermittent flying geese) using scrappy grays if that won't look too spotty.  [Danny's Quilt ...

Remembering Marianne from With Strings Attached

A light went out in the quilting world when Marianne Urban passed away on June 23.

With her online handle "Marianne in Mt. Vernon," she was a long-time participant in the Stashbusters and HeartStrings online groups.  She posted frequently and at great length.  She was supportive and insightful.

Chronic physical and health challenges limited her mobility but she overcame them in order to make dozens of quilts from her "stash the size of Montana," as she characterized it.

A year ago today I was able to spend the better part of a day with Marianne at her house (along with ...
