Never underestimate the inspiration caused by a group project from Art and Quilting in Camden

Art should be like a holiday: something to give a man the opportunity to see things differently and to change his point of view. -Paul Klee, painter (18 Dec 1879-1940)

So I’m part of Mt. Battie Modern Quilt Guild, one of two local groups. This chapter, part of the MQG (Modern Quilt Guild) is the smaller of the two and is almost completely comprised of members of Coastal Quilters (the other group) which is part of the statewide Pine Tree Quilt Guild (Maine is the Pine Tree state). For once, I decided to participate in a round robin sort ...

grassy creek 2 from Making A Lather

Saturday was an all day sew day. And, I used the time to work on my grassy creek mystery quilt from quiltville. It seemed harmless enough... 25 sets of matching  blah blah blah. I didn't cut the pieces until the morning of, so, I didn't have a lot of time to think through the math. I just cut a bunch. I spent 3 hours sewing the pieces, and, I still wasn't done. 25 sets was actually 400 pieces. hmmm. I chained pieces in their sets, which was a little fiddley. I cut them after each set.

After ...

Grassy Creek Clue Two from The Modern Diary

Clue two for Grassy Creek is complete.  Tiny little hourglasses.  I went with the old rotary cutting method and with Barb's help we figured out the Math wrong.  I did each step all the way through and it was not til I got to the put the HST's together to make the actual hourglasses that I realized I had made TWICE as many as I needed!  So I stopped at that step with half of them and am crossing my fingers they come up in a future clue (HAHAHAHHAHH!) but if not, I will use them somewhere.  Barb ...

to do: rug border 1 from Making A Lather

I went to a drive through baby shower Saturday. Isn't that a hoot. This sweet lady and her husband have tried for 10 years to have a baby, and thanks to the pandemic ( not really) , they are having a baby girl in December I am so happy for them. We waited 5 long years for our first little treasure and, then, our second. I hated everyone's encouraging words of "just relax" but, in the end...... I wish I had.

I have had a long time rug hooking ufo project. It seems most of the year, without my guild ...

guild workshop from Making A Lather

Last Saturday, I taught a workshop for my guild, making the shine block and quilt. I am inspired by other's choices.

all pink jelly roll

really pretty Christmas jelly roll

fun Christmas jelly roll

I did get one row put together while the other's were sewing. But, I didn't get enough pictures of the other choices.

my costume - I was the only one

I made the orange cross blocks that I was missing for the row x row quilt and the rainbow scrap challenge. I am also missing a second turquoise row.

And, it is now, part ...

guild presentation from Making A Lather

We had quilt guild last night. We are meeting in a park pavilion so the pictures are crummy, but, you can get an idea of  the quilts that our presenter brought for us to see. Steve is from Brownsburg Indiana and has a shop called: not your average quilter.

He specializes in applique and does it all on an elna domestic machine. He began as a designer for guard outfits and flags for bands many years ago. His quilts were intimidating, but, lovely to see.

There are  189 pieces in the lion.

This is a vector photo of himself.

2 Quilts (one complex & one simple), What's Cookin'?, and Covid numbers from caledonia quilter

PLEASE NOTE THAT I ONLY HAVE A FEW OPEN SPOTS BEFORE CHRISTMAS - GET IN TOUCH SOON IF YOU WILL NEED QUILTING DONE.

Here's the complex quilt, with a medallion setting and a bunch of paper pieced sharks teeth.

And curved piecing.  Don't forget the curved piecing.

This quilt took me back in time.  When I was a kid, Mom had made me a skirt that I loved - dark grey with box pleats.  The inset in the box pleats was pink with a tiny black print.  I felt so sassy when I wore that...every step showed off the ...

Let's Get Caught Up, Shall We? from caledonia quilter

Oh, fer crying out loud.  Now Blogger has gone and changed the posting format.  I hope this all comes out the way it usually does...

This started out as a bunch of butterfly blocks from a guild Block Of The Month.  Whoever won the blocks donated them back to the guild.  I thought (?) I had given all the guild donation quilt stuff to the new chair of those projects, but apparently my organizational skills are not what they should be.

I had a cute lilac print in my stash that worked well with the blocks.  I needed to add some ...

Half-Square Triangle Quilt, Yes I Have Flour, Covid Update #2 from caledonia quilter

I really enjoyed working on this quilt.  There is so much depressing/horrifying/shocking (pick any one) news every day that this really cheered me up.

The whole thing is made from half-square triangles.  If you are involved in a guild swap of half-squares, this is a great use for them.

Mmm, love the back.

YES, I HAVE FLOUR

Like many people I'm not sleeping very well some nights.  Although I don't usually get UP at three in the morning, last Tuesday I was WIDE AWAKE.  So I figured, what the hell.  And since I have flour I ...

Entertainment During The Pandemic, UFO's, Quilt Ideas, Local Happenings from caledonia quilter

SCHEDULING UPDATE
At the moment I still have seven quilts here that I will be working on.  As they're ready I'll contact you and arrange a porch pickup.
I am not taking in any quilts until the provincial restriction on non-essential businesses has been lifted.  I realize you might find that to be an inconvenience, but as a rule I do what the "people in charge" tell me to do. Depending on how long this situation persists it might mean your booking in May gets delayed until Julember, or whenever.  With all the UFO's that are being ...

A special summer reunion with Lennoxville and Vermont Quilters from Quilting with Claire

Now with everything that’s happening in the world, I finally have time to work on my projects which include a few blogs! Especially one about a special summer reunion. I had so many things to talk about last summer but I never got the time to post. So I am playing catch up. Hoping you’ll … Continue reading "A special summer reunion with Lennoxville and Vermont Quilters"

Jason Yenter Quilt and the Caledonia Pandemic Update from caledonia quilter

This is one of those quilts that scares me a little bit... I used lots of the "stand-and-stare" technique.

I will probably NEVER tackle a quilt like this - so much applique and paper piecing, with an on-point medallion setting.

I think at one point I had seven longarm rulers out - straight rulers, curvy rulers, circles, ...

I also needed chalk, a blue wash-out marker, and the IQ.  Along with some collaboration from the Beach Girls.

Beautiful back.

In my last post I mentioned that some things had been cancelled with the Coronavirus epidemic, and that the grocery store was out of ...

What happened to February???? Lovely Embroidery from caledonia quilter

I have obviously been M.I.A. ...almost a month since I last posted?  Well, let me catch you up.

Oh, such a beautiful embroidered topper... tablecloth?

The maker is such a wonderful woman, she embroidered my name on there too.

eclectic collection . . . from Count it *all* JOY!

It's been a busy week, which means I wasn't able to get in as much stitching as I would have liked, but I got some in nevertheless. I did make some progress on my heart:
But put it down to work on the Peppermint Purple SAL.
Week 8 was made available on Wednesday, and I had it finished on Thursday, along with a good majority of the box outlines for the entire stitchery!
It's easy, soothing stitching and I'm enjoying it very much.

Thursday was guild, and I struggled to go, because by the end of ...

always changing . . . from Count it *all* JOY!

Not a whole lot going on to show here today. I managed to change up the design of my class quilt (again) . . .
Here's my EQ layout. It's a respectable 60" by 60" now, so I think I'm done changing things!  I added the four corner blocks (which are just a tad different) and increased the width of the sashing and borders.
The blocks (laid out here in the order I planned to stitch them together) are now sashed and ready to have the borders stitched on.  I'd like to have that done before class on Tuesday ...

melba's blocks from Making A Lather

I had a great time at retreat. My back was not ready for the whole 2 days,  but, I made it into the second day. After relaxing the rest of the weekend, my back is better, and ready to go again. It just gets tired.
The first project I worked on, was a set of blocks that we bought from My husband's Aunt estate in the nineties. I talked about it  here. Each block is appliqued and embroidered with  names from an exchange. There were only 8 blocks, so I made a little set of hexagons to make it ...

Jelly Roll Heart Quilt & New Year's Happenings (1 UFO down...) from caledonia quilter

This is a lovely, modern Jelly Roll quilt.

I really like the way the pantograph echoes the heart shape.

On New Years Day I stuck with my traditional activity - a friend came over, we stitched the afternoon away, then had Chinese Food for supper.
I started the year off by putting these UFO blocks together - this was a Block of the Month project at the Caledonia guild in 2016/2017.  After I completed the blocks I decided I was tired of the colours - I think I have too much red/yellow/blue in my house these days.

I completed the ...

Prairie Points & Mug/Rug Swap from caledonia quilter

This is another one of those quilts where I hoped the maker would not come and pick it up after quilting.  Sadly, that didn't happen and it has gone back home.  The name of the block is Granny's Stars.

Prairie Points are definitely a challenge.  Once it's loaded on the longarm, flip the points OUT, baste one inch inside the base of the points, and leave the basting in.  Don't quilt anything beyond that - the maker will be turning the backing under and needs that space to work in.

The yoyo's added another bit of ...

happy crazy busy . . . from Count it *all* JOY!

The crazy busyness of the season continues ... and probably will right up until Christmas Eve evening! But it's happy crazy busy, which makes all the difference in the world, right?!  Wednesday evening Todd and I went to the staff Christmas party for Essential, the church where we're currently serving.
It was a very fun, laid back evening. Except for the 10 minutes we had in Target (where we went as a group to shop for our dirty Santa gifts).  That was hilarious!

Thursday lunch was the staff Christmas luncheon for my work (it was also my last day ...
