An Angel and Her Wings from Melva Loves Scraps

I received some shocking news the other day...

A HS classmate that has always been friendly, positive and encouraging had taken her own life.  When I relayed my news with Dave he said, "oh yeah, Danita... she was the one we met at the Rockies game a few years ago, right?  She lived life large...  What a shame."

It is a terrible shame.  Never had there ever been any indication that she was struggling with depression, anxiety or mental health issues.  The news of a cancer diagnosis was apparently just too much for her to handle... On Tuesday, she had ...

Friday Finish Less Than Perfect from Melva Loves Scraps

As a "recovering perfectionist" this statement is a difficult one for me to state... But sometimes I just have to.

The latest finish of #7/8 of the quilt tops for my customer is one that I am less than pleased with.  The slippery, shifty fabric was a challenge.  And the fact that it was larger than the other one that was made with the same type of fabrics made it even more difficult.

The borders were wonky and it made the pieced corners downright impossible to get the same.  **Insert frustrated and disappointed emojis** Amongst other emotions and thoughts ...

Toy Boats Finish from Melva Loves Scraps

I had an unplanned, extended session in the studio found a finish... thanks to a big storm.  Last week a high school classmate (dare I say, from 40 years ago!) contacted me requesting a baby quilt for a grandson that is due to arrive this spring.  The nursery is being done with a sea themed room in navy.  I took advantage of this extra time and found it very productive!

When I sent her a photo of a "Captain Frog" quilt I made several years ago she liked it... Here's the fabric pull for her grandson's quilt.

As ...

A Blessing of Fabric from Melva Loves Scraps

Last weekend I met up with many long-time friends... the first time in a really, really long time.  We had a common purpose for our gathering which was to begin preparing for a Women's retreat.  As we caught up with each other there was laughter and joy, tender care and prayer.

One especially tender reunion was with a close friend with whom I have stayed in contact with over the phone.  Our daughters happen to work together and have children close in age that attend the same school.  This friend learned in December that she had breast cancer and ...

Ladders & Steppingstones from Melva Loves Scraps

It's like winter finally decided to take up residence in Southern Colorado!  It started snowing on Friday afternoon... it snowed overnight, we had at least 10 inches says Dave, but I think more like 12"... and a truck with a flatbed trailer full of three vehicles stuck on the road just below our driveway.  You can read all the details of that adventure in this week's Sew & Tell edition.

Ladders and Steppingstones  has been quilted with some simple quilting outlining the steppingstones, free-motion feathers in the wider, outside ladders and vines and leaves in the narrow ladders.

I ...

TGIFF Party ~ Paper Lanterns from Melva Loves Scraps

We made it!  Welcome to Friday!  And welcome to Thank Goodness It's Finished Friday!  The place to share your finishes of the week and everyone here celebrates with you.

My finish this week is a quilt that was inspired by a picture on social media that reminded me of those little Chinese Paper Lanterns...

After deciding on a non-traditional sized block using a jellyroll, it took no time at all to sew this together...

The blocks are 11" x 22".  I used 29 of the 40 2-1/2" strips in the jelly roll, including what I used in the ...

Making a Happy Plate from Melva Loves Scraps

It is not a finish... but I am so close!  I see the end is near and I don't want to lose my momentum, so this is just a really quick update.

Like eating an elephant one bite at a time... slow and steady is how I have managed to get this quilt as far as I have...

Stitch in the ditch was the first step and then the plates and centers outlined...  followed by the cut lace tablecloth sections being outlined.

Next was the narrow border with leaves and the final border with big feathers...

I have 8 ...

Lily Clara Bridal Veil Finish from Melva Loves Scraps

I finished the embroidery on the bridal veil block medallion over the weekend and since it was only becoming a table topper, the top was ready for quilting in no time at all!

If you missed it before, Lily Clara is a character from a story told through letters by The Flower Letters... here is their description of the story.

When spirited dressmaker Lily Clara Moore answers a matrimonial ad, she heads west for an adventure that quickly turns out to be more than she bargained for.

The year is 1884, and a little town in the western United States ...

A Friday Funfetti Finish from Melva Loves Scraps

This baby quilt, that I have dubbed "Funfetti!" was as fun to make as it is to look at!  Since the 4-patch blocks were already pieced, it was simply cutting a few setting blocks and sewing it all together.

The quilting details...

Free-motion "posies" in the pink printed blocks and hearts surrounded by FM stipple in the pink & green blocks.  I chose to use three thread colors... A light green in the pink blocks, darker green in the green blocks, and a lovely rose color for the posies as well as the bobbin thread for the back of the quilt ...

Hanna's First Year Finish from Melva Loves Scraps

I snuck in the finish of Hanna's First Year quilt just in the nick of time to get it on social media and linked for August's One Month Goal...

And then we turned the calendar to September, and I have been preoccupied with lots of other things.  Including the celebration of (INTER)National Sewing Month.  To kick of the celebration Brenda at Songbird Designs and I co-hosted a blog hop featuring 20 bloggers that shared a variety of projects that fell into the theme of "Get on Board with Sewing".  We went international with several bloggers that live ...

Hanna's First Year - Friday Finished Top from Melva Loves Scraps

I have a Friday Finish... um, of sorts.  I have Hanna's First Year Quilt all together and with borders!

I have sandwiching, quilting and binding to do for it to be fully finished, but this week, at this time, at this place... I believe in celebrating baby steps, or phases/stages.

I have a couple other projects I need to turn my focus to over the weekend..  like a little squirrel project that popped up.

We have been doing a few small projects in the camper as we continue to make it "our own."  Since we turned the mattress ...

Marathon Quilt Finish from Melva Loves Scraps

After recovering from the marathon painting and cleaning session over the weekend, I got borders done and moved to sandwiching the quilt.

My standard quilting of 4" squares on point, allowing the t-shirts to be the focus, was wrapped up Thursday morning... leaving just the binding for the afternoon.  Easy, peasy!

But before I could do the binding I had a little job to do... I left myself a little note on my Babylock Lyric, to remind me that I needed to do a cleaning before I continued sewing anything!

Well, okay then!  At least I was polite and said ...

Another Custom Friday Finish from Melva Loves Scraps

I am on a roll!  Another week and another finish!  Woohoo!

The fabric for the backing arrived on Monday and on Tuesday I quickly got to working getting the various "left over" t-shirt bits that didn't make it into the top.  The recipient of this quilt is a music lover and guitar player and the musical print fabric allowed for the many random seams without being disruptive to the print pattern.

The 4-inch square on point is my standard quilting for quilts like this... allowing for the t-shirts to be the star of the show.  There was certainly ...

Good Friday DrEAMI Finish from Melva Loves Scraps

I have a couple finishes to celebrate...

I finished quilting the Summertime Orange Dreamscicle quilt for my customer and it is on its way...

She had requested meandering for the quilting and it just looks luscious!

No fancy photo shoot for this one... the wind was horrible!

The idea for my next finish came to me on Sunday morning as we watched an on-line worship.  There was a large modern, neon-looking cross suspended above the altar area where the pastor was delivering his message.

I sketched it out and knew I had to DRop Everything And Make It (DrEAMI) this ...

I was asked to kindly note that this linkup is for finishes... but I'll just leave it up to you to define "finished".
