First flowers of spring from The Academic Quilter

Hi everyone, and welcome to the weekend spring begins-- hurray! It's been a long winter, and I am glad to see the end of it. At least I hope we've seen the end. Winter never seems to want to leave, and could still surpise us once or twice. But check out what is blooming on our hillside:

Yes, it's first daffodil of spring, and I am very, very happy to see it! And here's something else I'm happy to see-- a finished quilt:

There's a chance that this quilt has been done for a ...

Chains and waves from The Academic Quilter

Here we are at the weekend, thank heavens! It has been another difficult week around here, though the weather has been lovely. It was 52 degrees yesterday, and it might hit 60 today. I went walking in a sweatshirt, not a heavy jacket! It was wonderful. I understand it's supposed to snow on Sunday, but we'll deal with that when we get there.

I actually have a finish today. You know how you can just start mindlessly pushing a quilt through the machine and it's repetitive and calming?  Yep, that's how I felt when I was ...

Going around again from The Academic Quilter

Hi everyone! Is it cold where you are? I'm sorry to tell you that our snow is gone, but we have somehow entered the deep freeze. It was 19 degrees when I got up this morning, but very sunny. It was lovely. I waited until noon to go walking, but my neighbors still stared at me. Maybe I should get a dog so it looks like I have an excuse to be outside. Do you think that would make up for the dog allergy?

Many of you may have heard about the Stay at Home Round Robin, a fun ...

Positively finished from The Academic Quilter

Hello everyone, and happy weekend! So, late last week I was walking across campus, along a new sidewalk, when I kind of fell off the sidewalk. There was a trench of sorts next to the concrete, where they hadn't filled in with dirt yet, and my ankle turned right to the side, exactly the wrong way. Funnily enough, it didn't hurt right away, but later it ballooned up, and it hurt like crazy. The good news is-- soft tissue injury, like a bad sprain. Not broken! The bad news is that it still hurts like crazy.

So, could ...

charity quilts from Making A Lather

Our guild met on Saturday to sew quilts for charity. We donate to the police department for trauma children and for healthy families  and education. One of our members had her Florida guild do these large tumblers for their donation quilts and she wanted us to try them as well. We cut one Saturday and made kits. And this Saturday, we sewed the kits together for a quilt.

Maris made 2 ahead of time.

Welcome Home Again from Wedding Dress Blue

This is the third Welcome Home top finished for donation.

They are quick and each–all 2-1/2″ strips and only 48 blocks. You can get all the details HERE: TUTORIAL: Welcome Home Quilt Block – Wedding Dress Blue (wordpress.com)

I like the scrappy happy look, but it is easy to see a more controlled color scheme could be used for wedding quilts, quilts of valor or just about any occasion.

Pushing towards a finish soon.

Small comforts from The Academic Quilter

Hello all! If you are familiar with the Hands to Help challenge over at Confessions of a Fabric Addict, you know that this year's challenge is ending. I think this is the first time in a while that I have all the donation quilts finished by the end of the challenge. Yay me! I showed the two smaller quilts that I made for the challenge HERE, and today I have two (slightly) larger quilts that I've also finished:

The light has been really weird because we've had so much rain lately, and please ignore the fact that ...

Some of this and some of that from The Academic Quilter

Hi everyone! How are you all doing today? I am happy to say that this past weekend was one of the best weekends ever, as we got to go to visit our Wisconsin grandchildren for the first time in 15 months, and to meet our smallest granddaughter for the first time ever. I'm happy to say that Giggles is just the happiest child, and is so cheerful that it's contagious. It was glorious, and so long awaited. I think my heart grew several sizes. Also, restaurants are now called "the french fry store," which is what the 3-year-old ...

Two babes in the woods from The Academic Quilter

Hi everyone! It's yet another weekend, and it feels like spring on a regular basis now. We've also had some spring storms, so I guess next month there will be an abundance of flowers, right? It just happens that this week we got new gutters with leaf-resistant covers on them, which seems like it's just in time because our trees are just leafing out now. If past springs are any guide, one morning next week I'll get up and all the leaves will have filled in. And then I will do my happy dance, right there ...

Round and round from The Academic Quilter

Hi everyone, and welcome to a lovely, sunny, warm Friday! This is sure to change as the weekend goes on, but for now it feels great. I know it's "fake spring," but I'll take it! It has been yet another hard week, but I did manage to put the last round on my Stay at Home Round Robin quilt top. This was a fun quilt along run by Quilting Gail, with the different rounds chosen by different bloggers.  I'm a little later than most people, as usual, but here is the top I finished from this project ...

Not My Style, And That’s The Point from Wedding Dress Blue

Sometimes I am given scraps, or even a partially finished quilt, that just isn’t my style. But, it is an opportunity.

It pushes my creativity, design skills and problem solving abilities. It makes me a beginner again. It makes me learn.

Sometimes a not-my-style quilt is just what I need.

ps–Judy asks a good question: What was I actually given? AGAIN, I didn’t take a picture of the starting point. But, there were a few pinwheels finished, with a dark purple strip sewn to one side. There were several sets of squares (light purple and background) sewn ...

traffic jam finish from Making A Lather

I finished my one monthly goal for December. The quick finish was why I chose this project for the goal. I felt a chance at success and took it. I have worked on this most of the year, off and on. I made the blocks in January at a retreat. I made the top at another retreat on Nov 18.

to do: cut more baby wiggle from Making A Lather

I had a sew day last Thursday, and, I decided to work on a baby quilt I have had cut for a couple of years. I love cynthia Brunz's wiggle time pattern and wanted to try something with these fabrics. I discovered that I had cut 2 strips wrong, and, that meant, I didn't have enough fabric to finish it. I think it will be ok if I mix background fabrics.

Even though, it is not Thanksgiving yet. I baked bread, and loved the smell of that in the house. It just seems like  the holidays. We bought ...

FMQ Refresher from Needle and Foot

With the onset of the pandemic and especially when everything shut down, my shop went nuts. It took me by surprise, never having owned an on-line business during a pandemic before. (Who knew??). Anyway, I was happy to provide fabric to the many, many people making masks as well as quilters who were not able to physically go into their LQS. As a result of this increase though, I was really busy and had almost no time to sew.

Things have changed and many people are venturing into brick and mortar shops (which is good for the shop owners, as ...

baby quilt finish from Making A Lather

I have a baby quilt finish. It came to me nearly finished - only missing one border. I can't remember where I found it. I knew it would make a great donation quilt. Our guild donates to the police department for the the kids that are taken from bad situations. They often have only a brown paper sack to take with them. We also have a healthy family organization to which we donate.

It came with a piece big enough for the back. I must say, I like starting out like this, rather than from scratch. haha.

6 blocks had ...

Taking a wrong turn from The Academic Quilter

Hi all! So, here we are in the middle of July. How do we feel about this? I feel like I lost about four months somewhere along the line, but at the same time I feel like the last couple of months have been as long as a couple of years. Anyone else feel the same way? On the upside, though, and as a direct effect of being cooped up for so long, I have discovered heirloom tomatoes, and now I never want to eat any other kind. This will undoubtedly make the squirrels quite happy, as I suspect they ...

A donation quilt up next from Northern Deb Quilts

Isn't this ABC fabric adorable? I was cleaning and straightening my stash when I came across this older Holly Holderman fabric panel from Lakehouse.
I have an assortment of coordinating fabrics too. I've been thinking of making a few small donations quilts for the hospital. They give a blanket or quilt and a teddy bear to each child that is staying overnight for the first time. I've donated a few before but this last week was the first time someone I knew, would receive one.

Charlie got pretty sick this past week. He was kept overnight...and ...

Mercyful Quilts on Parade from Needle and Foot

I have been looking forward to the mail delivery and the UPS guy daily. Most days they bring me a wonderful package to open. It’s like Christmas around here!! Sarah’s amazing Hands2Help event is finishing up at the end of the month so quilts are being mailed to various organizations all over the map. Mercy Hospital in Sacramento is one of the (incredibly grateful) recipients.I have opened quilts from throughout the US – Florida, Texas, Arizona, and North Carolina among others!

I thought it was time to share the bounty with you. I took pictures of some of ...

In Honor of Paula from Needle and Foot

Today is the kick off of a blog hop honoring Paula B. Paula was a kind and generous quilter who blogged at Paula B Quilts for a number of years. She loved thrifting (we certainly had that in common), studying antique quilts and making quilts for charity. One of her favorite organizations was Project Linus. Our quilting community was saddened to hear of Paula’s death on February 8, 2020 after a short and unexpected illness.

Some weeks later, I received an email from Kate of Smiles From Kate and Janice of Color Creating and Quilting, asking if I would ...

Spring in spite of it all from The Academic Quilter

Hello from a socially safe distance, everyone! It has been a weird and stressful week here, but in spite of that, I've been outside walking (alone, I swear) and it turns out that spring is making a valiant effort to break through. This makes me super-happy. There are some things the virus can't change, after all.  No daffodils on my property yet, but there is a lot of periwinkle and some smaller bulbs.

I know this isn't a quilty picture to start with, but I think we all need something pretty:

Pink magnolias from my neighbor's ...
