Another Week of Stitching from High Road Quilter

2021:  Week 32 of 15 Minutes to Stitch

I spent my week quilting the quote quilt. It was mostly stitching near the ditch around the quotes, and some of the big motifs.

My report is spaced out again this week so I can include my photos. Some of these may look familiar because they are the same settings, but they are new photos taken this week.

2021:  Week 31 of 15 Minutes to Stitch

Kate's photo challenge for the week was Decay. I present the photo above for that challenge.

It is time for a confession. This week, genealogy won the competition between genealogy and quilting. I didn't do any quilting at all this week. I plan to do some quilting today, but since I have had some scant quilting days in the past, I will just add today's work with next weeks.

Best July Photos from High Road Quilter

I have taken a lot of photographs throughout the month, and have been showing them to you, but I still have more, so I will share them in this post. Most of these were taken in Cincinnati, Ohio, where we went to the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. They are featuring a moving quilt exhibit, called "We are the Story: a Visual Response to Racism" but unfortunately we were not permitted to photograph them. There are a few quilts shown on their website.

The center had strict masking and social distancing protocols and is located right by the river where ...

Second Half of the Year Begins from High Road Quilter

It's the second half of the year already! I recently took a class with Dayton Art Institute where you made a drawing to replicate the style of Julian Stamczak. You draw straight lines, then you overlay them with curvy lines, and you color them in a checkerboard style. My curtains with the curves formed by the mini blinds shadows remind me of that style.

This is an index card reproduction. I think it would be great to try to replicate that in a small quilt. In this card, I made the diagonal lines after coloring so the checkerboard isn ...

Quilting the Quote Quilt from High Road Quilter

After the backing has been added to a crazy quilt, the next step is to simply tack it to secure the layers.

This sounds great in theory. After all the work of adding so many embellishments, you may be done with it and just want to finish it off so you can show it off and/or move on to your next quilt.

However, for me, it is a big pivot to move from maximalist, everything goes, to minimalist tacking stitches. I am not anywhere near tired of the quilt.

2021: Week 24 of 15 Minutes to Stitch from High Road Quilter

The weeks are going by so fast.  In week 24, I worked on the backing for the Quote quilt. I had made the decision in week 23 to use a dark blue backing and had chosen a couple of batik pieces that would work.

This week, I looked again in the closet and found a different blue backing fabric that I liked better. This fabric is wider so will require less piecing, and I think it fits the theme and age of the quilt better.

Week 20 of 15 Minutes to Stitch from High Road Quilter

I want to thank everyone on their input for the border fabric for the Amalfi quilt. It is so nice that there is consensus about the solid inner border and the floral fabric for the outer border. I can now move forward with confidence without any second guessing. I really liked that combination too, but I was thinking that the criteria I was trying to give the eye a place to rest and the floral fabric does not fit that criteria.  I now realize that a fabric that is too calm would not fit with the overall mood of the ...

2021:  Weeks 13 of 15 Minutes to Stitch

Now that the Project Quilting challenges are over, I can spend my time spring cleaning and replenishing my frozen meal supply.

I got my first COVID vaccine this week and spent the bulk of my free time with my genealogy addiction. On the ...

15 Minutes to Stitch from High Road Quilter

My oven is working again. I ordered a new igniter switch, and it came right away express mail. But it arrived broken, and they sent the replacement by first class mail. All the videos said it was easy to replace, but it took two other brains and a few days to figure out how to put it in. We had turned off the gas during the first fix, and I left it off in an abundance of caution, which meant I was without a stove too for more than a week.  I got by without resorting to eating out, but ...

Inspiration Squirrels from High Road Quilter

Since I didn't work this week, I have been trolling the internet, and there is such an incredible amount of inspiration there.

On Facebook, Lona Powell is sharing her daily Coronavirus lockdown experience. She writes fun and quirkly positive notes and makes a watercolor to go along with it to describe her day. I see her posts on the Art Journal Junkie group. She is on Day 273 so she has been doing this for a while. Many people have asked her to publish a book when she is finished.

Also on Facebook, another person has started a journal ...

Week 47 from High Road Quilter

Since I've added historical events in the quote quilt, I have been trying to think of significant things that happened during the 2002 and 2020 time frame. Please let me know what big things happened in this time frame.

One of the things I remembered was the mini tornado that happened in the neighborhood. You can still see some effects of that tornado today. Then I listened to the news about the record breaking hurricane year.  I decided to add something to the quilt to represent all these weather related issues, and global warming in general.

I looked for ...

Still More Additions to Quote Quilt from High Road Quilter

When I took the photo of the bird in front of the red tree last time, I apparently wasn't done. She kept chirping to me to take her photo.  She didn't trust my photo skills so she didn't pose - she just sat very still so I could take a photo that wasn't blurry. Thanks, Robin!

After I did that, the crow let me know he was next, but I couldn't see him and he wasn't willing to come any closer. Maybe next time, Crow.

Week 45 of 2020 from High Road Quilter

When I let Zeus out yesterday afternoon, I noticed a bird beautifully silhouetted in front of my neighbor's tree with the orange leaves. We have had fabulous colors this year, and this tree has never stood out to me. I ran inside to get the camera and when I came back, it was still there. When I zoomed in, I could see the bird clearly.  In fact, the bird stayed there and posed for me until I had more pictures than I could ever need. Most of them came out sharp and clear.

Summer Happenings from High Road Quilter

There are a couple of people who share their coronavirus diaries with us every day.  They both add drawings to their daily happenings and make beautiful journals.  I really enjoy getting to vicariously join them in their adventures, so I thought I would share some of my "adventures" with you.

Think of it is a "what I've done on my summer vacation so far." This replaces the photos of the month I usually present.

I bought a planter to take to my brother's funeral. I was too late to order one for delivery, so I ran out to ...

Three Weeks of Stitching from High Road Quilter

I've missed some weekly recaps so this is three weeks worth of stitching.

2020:  Week 17 of 15 Minutes to Stitch

Since my job disappeared for the entire calendar year due to school closures this spring, my employer offered me another stay at home that pays about 70% of my pay.  This week, I had finished the training and was actually doing this job.  There is a lot to remember and this is like a customer service job where you talk to lots of people who are anxious. While they are all nice to me, I picked up a ...

My Favorite Photos From April from High Road Quilter

Once a month, or thereabouts, I look through my folder of photographs, and choose my favorites to share with you. Here are my favorites for April 2020.

If I take any new photos I want to share before the end of the month, I will share them in a different post.

The world is still beautiful and continues to turn.

I haven't sewn at all this week, but since I allow myself time to make up the stitching, I hope to make up the time today so I can maintain my 100%. I'll write a new post to ...

My Favorite Photos from February from High Road Quilter

I usually don't have enough photos to share in February, but since we had gone to the park for the photo shoot / quilt exhibit, I do have enough to share this month. Not all of the photos were taken at the park. Some were taken in the neighborhood.

I have also included my 15 minutes to stitch this week at the bottom of the post.

My Quilting Week from High Road Quilter

Once a month, if I get around to it, I share my favorite pictures I took during the month. Winter is not a good picture taking season for me, but I did manage to get a few. These are my favorite pictures in January.

2020:  Week 6 of 15 Minutes to Stitch

My stitching week consisted of making the hearts quilt I showed in my last post. I made two blocks for the shirts quilt. I need to make just two more before the row will be finished. I also cut some fabric and started on the quilt I am ...
