Churn Dash Finish #9, #10 and #11 from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

Boy, have I been busy on these Compassion Quilts.

I am ready to share three more Churn Dash finishes today!

Quilt number 9 is this fun one made from 6" Churn Dash and 6" four patch blocks. Most of these blocks were sent in from Debbie.  She sent me a photo of them on her design wall and I decided to just sew them up as she had them.  I just had to add in a few Churn Dash blocks that were missing and add the flag border.  I think it turned out great!

But did you notice I sewed ...

Churn Dash Quilts #7 and #8 from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

It's Friday and that means sharing two more Churn Dash quilts made from donated blocks.

The layout for quilt #7 you have already seen before.  I had a lot of large 12" blocks that leaned toward turquoise in color so I made another staggered quilt.  However, instead of inserting a piece of fabric in rows two and four, I used some 6" blocks instead.

This quilt is very bright and happy.  I quilted it with big swirls and bound it with a dark turquoise solid.

With the top being so colorful, I decided to put this donated red and ...

Churn Dash Quilts #5 and #6 from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I have been finishing so many quilts lately.  Every night, my little helper snuggles up next to me as I work on hand-sewing bindings.  We both really enjoy the process!

The fifth quilt I have made from the Churn Dash blocks is this fun one which uses only 12" blocks and some gifted dark blue fabric.  I really do appreciate when there is a cut of fabric in with blocks - it is usually what inspires me for a design.

I also loved the pieced pinwheels in the center of two of the blocks.  You can see I put them in ...

Churn Dash Quilts #3 and #4 from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

Ready to see a couple more Churn Dash quilts made from the current block drive?

For quilt #3, I used a bunch of blocks that came in with cream backgrounds.  I think many of them were made by Nann.  For this layout, I decided to just use twelve 12" blocks and sash them with some 2.5" star sashing.

I am really pleased with how this one turned out.  And because Nann sent me a big box of patriotic fabrics, there was some yardage of the striped fabric she used in her blocks.  So I was able to add a ...

Churn Dash Quilt #2 from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

It has been so much fun to see all the different blocks coming in almost every day.  Many of them inspire some of the designs I come up with.

Today's quilt was the first quilt I put together.  These were some of the earliest blocks I received and I think Nann donated most of these blocks.  I love to stagger blocks because some interesting secondary designs show themselves.  These Churn Dash blocks did not disappoint!

I really wanted a red backing on this one.  So I pulled an extra-wide scroll print that a client gifted me a few months ...

Churn Dash Finish #1 from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

 Let's get this party started!

I am finally ready to start sharing the Churn Dash Compassion quilts using the blocks donated by so many of you.

This first quilt wasn't the first top I put together but it is the first one I finished and photographed.

All of the Churn Dash blocks came from Libby.  (She actually talks about making them on her blog here and here.)   I love the little mini churn in the center of some of them.

When the blocks arrived in the mail, they were still in order and all I had to do ...

Compassion Quilt Churn Dash Block Drive from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

Hard to believe that March is almost here.  But that means it is time to get started on the next Compassion Quilt block drive!

These blocks will be making quilts for our Veterans - so the color scheme will be red, white and blue.

Kat usually does her Covered in Love Star block drive around July.  So, I thought we would make our patriotic blocks in the Spring and we would make Churn Dash blocks.

In fact, there will be a choice of THREE blocks.  (So you can make the blocks that gives you the best usage of your scraps.  You ...

I'm Done with the Pyramids .... or Trees? from Applique 'n Patch Quilting

Are these pyramids or trees?  My hubby says 'trees'.  Anyway, the top is currently at the LAer and I will get it back in a few weeks.  I can't say this was a fun EPP project to do as it did give me some issues that I was able to overcome.  So glad this one is done and I can move onto something else.

My churn dash quilt is back from the LAer.  This has been added to the pile of quilts to bind next year.
With the huge X-stitch craze going on now, my sister sent me a ...

Tick Off Another! from Applique 'n Patch Quilting

This is a long awaited ufo that has finally been ticked off the list!  Thanks to Chooky and her Churn Dash Challenge ..... this was pulled off the shelf and the top is done and will be going to my favourite LAer, Kathy, next week.  It was so nice to show off this top when I zoomed with Chooky last week.  Oh, happy, happy days!

This past weekend and this week, we have been having glorious weather with the temps going up to mid-twenties Celsius.  So nice, that my sister and I and our brother and SIL made a trip out ...

UFO Finish from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

Last December, a friend and I decided to have a UFO challenge in 2022.  We chose 12 UFOs and decided that every month we would draw a number and try and finish that project.

I was doing great until June hit and my life got busy.

The June project was to make a quilt to use up more of this neutral fabric stack.  Normally I don't put an unstarted quilt on my UFO list.  But these fabrics don't fit in my stash very well so I felt making a quilt from these leftovers would be the best option ...

Lazy days of summer! from Applique 'n Patch Quilting

Not much quilting is going on in my life right now.  This is cottage time and my sister and I have been busy doing a bit of redo ...... painting and flooring.  It never ends, but we enjoy our work done so far.  I even cut down a wee tree by hand.  It took about half an hour of sawing, but it got down.  This little cedar tree was blocking my sister's view of part of the lake and she asked if 'we' could cut it down.  I knew what the 'we' entailed ..... me!  LOL

A few weeks ago, I ...

Oh Scrap! : Finally Some Sewing from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

It has been a week since I posted something!

I didn't have a finished quilt to share on Friday and I haven't really started anything new so it is pretty silent around here.

I did get my four purple Chaser blocks finished for the month of July.  I think I already have my orange blocks done so now I should have enough blocks to put the quilt top together.  I just need an empty design wall so I can plan the layout.

Hopefully soon this one will be a finish!

These blocks aren't made from scraps, but ...

Great Progress + Garden from Applique 'n Patch Quilting

After we got our 4th Covid vaccination, we had a couple hours of chills ..... but that is all.  We were supposed to feel tired for a few days ..... but so far .... nope.  We are good to go.

So, instead of just sitting in my chair while watching T.V., or playing games on my ipad, I got busy pinning the last two rows onto my Churn Dash Challenge top and had a marathon of sewing, pinning, sewing.  It is a large queen, so those rows seemed to take forever to pin.

Then once that center was done, my Stash Buster ...

Churn Dash Challenge, Garden from Applique 'n Patch Quilting

Going to our cottage has been great for working on the sashings on my Churn Dash quilt.  Get chores done and out of the way and sit on the porch, applique and watch the hummingbirds fight at the feeder.

Our summer, so far, has seen a few hot and then cool days.  No heat wave for any length of time this year.  Unusual?  Yes.  This could change and we will see.

This is where I'm at with this challenge.  Great progress has been made.  At this point, only two more diagonal rows (diagonally in the center) need to have ...

June UFO Challenge from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

For me, 2022 is all about reducing the number of UFOs I have.  At the beginning of the year, a close friend wanted to join me so we made a little challenge.  So far I have completed every project that has been drawn.  But then came June...

June's project is to make another quilt from a box of neutral fabrics that are left over from this strata quilt.  I probably have enough fabric to make two quilts! (I didn't pull it all out of the box).

Normally this would not be counted as a UFO because no fabric ...

Churn Dash update for June from Applique 'n Patch Quilting

Much, much progress has been made on the Churn Dash Challenge that Chookyblue is hosting.  So far, I've met my challenge for the month of June.  Win-win-win!

All my large 10" and 5" blocks for the challenge are done .... so don't have to worry about meeting those goals anymore.

Now, the sashings are a different story.  For this large quilt, 64 sashings are needed.  When divided by the 4 month challenge, 16 sashings per month are to be appliqued.  For the month of June, my goal of 16 has been met plus an additional 4 sashings for a ...

Churn Dash and beyond from Applique 'n Patch Quilting

Well ..... I'm very pleased with myself ..... am making great progress on the Churn Dash Challenge that Chookyblue (the enabler) has tempted many bloggers to take up.  It all started with the binding challenge that I issued.  While we were zooming she worked on bindings and her Churn Dash quilt was one of them.  Many of us were hooked after seeing her quilt and there was a lot of chatter about doing a sew-along ..... a challenge was issued and viola ....

Back in 2008, I had started a Churn Dash quilt but it got shelved.  It was the sashing that bothered ...

Churn Dash Challenge from Applique 'n Patch Quilting

As I'm working on my new squirrel project that I chatted about on my last post, an oldie UFO is being released from the shelf!

Chookyblue is having a sew-along of a churn dash quilt.  She wanted to know who else would be interested.  Well, me of course as I so love that block.

But ..... something was bugging me.  I was sure that I had made a churn dash quilt before.  Well, yes I did with this quilt, which is one of my favourite scrappy quilts made so far.  This has been gifted and I really need to make ...

Oh Scrap! : The Last RSC Blocks from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

Even though February is a short month, I still finished all of my Rainbow Scrap Challenge blocks this month. That makes me happy!

The last two blocks to finish this month were my Two Bits blocks.  I only made two because I have already made quite a few blue blocks.

This project is a holdover from last year.  It is still up on one of my design walls.  I only need to make 7 more blocks.  I had hoped I would find time to just finish it up but I keep getting distracted by other pretty things.

I would really ...

Churn Dash Block Using Fat Quarters from Quiltnotes All Blogs

The churn dash quilt block is an old favorite. It's a 9-patch block, meaning there are 9 units of construction. There are four half square triangle units, four rail fence units and one plain block unit. In this article you will learn how to piece a 12" finished churn dash quilt block. Look at the end of this article for other finished block sizes. There is a link to instructions to make a Churn Dash Quilt approximately 66" x 80" finished. For these instructions you can use scraps or two fat quarters of contrasting fabrics. Two fat quarters will ...
