December Challenge and Blog Hop from Sew Preeti Quilts

I firmly believe that anyone who has a voice can sing. Whether their singing is pleasant to hear or not is another story altogether.  Similarly, I can make a quilt with any group of colors. Will that grouping be aesthetically appealing? That depends on the design.

December Challenge!

Four times a year when the challenge is combined with a blog hop, we the Island Batik ambassadors are required to use one of the new fabric collections, assigned to us. Further we are directed to use as many fabrics (from the collection) as possible.

I was assigned the Chickadee Fabric Collection ...

Quilt Symposium - Kawandi Class from Wendy's Quilts and More

My Kawandi is finished!

I took a one day Kawandi class with Lorena Uriarte at Quilt Symposium 2022.  We learnt to make Kawandi and here is mine.

Kawandi are meant to be scrappy, but I used a charm pack of Koi Pond by Ruby Star Society.  I knew the colours would all work together and I'm pleased with how it turned out.

But the process used up the fabric more quickly than I anticipated, so I ran out of Koi Pond fabrics before it was finished.  I had a Ruby Star Society panel in my stash, so I bravely ...

Neptune and the Mermaid from Wendy's Quilts and More

My Neptune and the Mermaid quilt is finished and currently on display in the Quilt Symposium exhibition at the Lower Hutt Events Centre.

I started this quilt in a class with Wendy Whellum at the Auckland Quilt Symposium in 2019.  We made our own plastic templates and hand pieced each of the blocks.

Here's some close ups of the blocks for those who can't make it to the exhibition:

I chose to use some gorgeous fabrics called "Neptune and the Mermaid" by Tokyo Milk for Free Spirit Fabrics.  And some Tula Pink too as required.

I finished the ...

Myriad Interpretations of Language: Collaborative Quilt Project from Goer

I’m a big fan of Sam Hunter (website -- IG) so when she put the call out for a community stitching project I opted in. I don’t generally do hand work, but the initial details assured us that it would be minimal and easy to complete.

The prompt arrived and I took a very literal, mathematical approach to it. In the moment, I wasn’t overthinking it at all. I was simply following the instructions.

I mailed my block from San Jose, California </p>

Soley Cove Flowerpot from Sew Karen-ly Created...

This "flowerpot" is located at Soley Town, a beautiful spot just at the base of Economy Mountain, N.S.  I took this picture a year or so ago and decided it would make a good project to stitch.

Using the photograph as a guide, I traced around the main pieces in the photo and cut those from fabric.  The rest of the details (like the trees) were added using different weights of Aurifil thread.
Mostly I stitched with 50 weight thread, but some 40 and 28 weight found their way in there as well.

It honestly hasn't turned out ...

Aurifil Color Builder Challenge - Innamorato from Sew Preeti Quilts

The March challenge is sponsored by Aurifil Threads.  Here are the simple guidelines to complete the challenge.

Create a piece inspired by your assigned Italian destination. It could be a city scene, a landscape, or something you associate with the location.

  • Size: 20” x 20” or under

  • Must use each of the 3 thread spools from the Color Builder box, how the thread is used is up to the maker!

  • Utilize thread painting, some type of appliqué or a combination of the two

I chose orange for two reasons.
1. I like orange :-)
2. I had leftover orange fabrics from ...

Project QUILTING 13.1: All the Colors from Goer

This successful little quilt was a plan B and FOMO all wrapped into one.

It’s Project QUILTING season again! I’ve participated the last five years. (Though some years I don’t complete all six challenges.) In the last many months I have been focusing on finishing up works in progress. I even updated the full UFO/WIP list. (Updated list coming later this month.) So... I decided what I would do for Project QUILTING this year would be to finish a project that was in progress for each of the challenges. I figured with the lengthy list of ...

The Sew Down – 2022 Aurifil Thread Challenge from Fat Quarter Shop's Jolly Jabber

Kimberly holding a cone of Aurifil Thread

The new year is almost here, and I’m starting off 2022 with a new Aurifil cone to see how far it will go! I tried this out a few years ago, and it took me nine months to finish it all (that’s a full 6,452 yards). I’ve chosen a cone of my favorite thread, Aurifil color 2000, which I’ll start using for all my sewing on January 1. If you want to join in, all you have to do is select a new cone or spool of Aurifil thread and sew with it starting January ...

Iberian Lynx - Back from the Brink from Sew Preeti Quilts

The Island Batik Challenge for October was as follows:

The 2021 Aurifil Color Builders are a capsule of 12 mini-collections dedicated to an incredibly worthy cause that falls in line with Aurifil’s goal to increase sustainability and positive environmental impact — Endangered Species. Each collection contains three large spools of their supple and strong 40wt thread — a warm, a medium, and a dark.

For the October challenge, Aurifil is asking you to create a piece inspired by the endangered animal featured on your assigned Color Builder box. Use each one of the 3 provided colors somewhere in the challenge piece ...

Aurifil Color Builders 2022 from Sew Karen-ly Created...

Aurifil has just announced the details of their 2022 Colour Builders, and it looks pretty amazing!  This highly successful thread-of-the-month program is now heading into its third year season, with each year building on the success of the previous.  As a dealer, I participated for the first time this past year and have to say that everything ran like clockwork.  It’s a super way to build your thread stash and save a bit off the price of individual spools while doing do.  Personally, I loved going to my thread rack and having just the shade I needed at my ...

Island Batik - Try a Tool Blog Hop from Sew Preeti Quilts

My assignment was to use the Butterfly Blooms collection and the Corner Pop 3 Ruler to make a project.

Butterfly Blooms, designed by Kathy Engle, is shipping to stores in September 2021.
Let's first feast our eyes on the lovely fabrics.

Cassowary is Finished from The Quilt Yarn

Wow...I worked for most of last week on this to get him done and today I finished him.

I am just a little bit proud of this...nothing about this project came easy to me. Each section had its own challenging little things and some of them I did get right and some of them I did not.

In general, I think I thread painted a bit heavily in parts and some of the shading is a bit wonky, but I am more than happy with it. Actually cannot believe I managed to do this.

And here he is ...

Bella Skill Builder Quilt Along 2017 WIP Finish from In the Boondocks

WIP Finish

I was a blogger with the
For the
Bella Skill Builder Quilt Along 2017

My good friend,
A local Longarmer, Irene Hensley, quilted it for me!
All washed and ready to used.
My grandson is happy to have it for his bed!

It is really beautiful and I feel kind of
guilty it took 4 years to finish the quilting and
put a binding on.  This Summer I am going to see,
how many more might be hiding around here!

Do you have any WIPs just hiding out somewhere?

Finish ...
